An antique. Victorian, Continental, Grand Tour, desk thermometer. It is a bronze& black marble obelisk with a crowned& winged globe on top. It has both Fahrenheit& Reaumur scales. It measures about 12" 30.5 cm. tall. It is in excellent condition for its age. There are minor flea bites to edges of marble& verdigris which attest to its age. The thermometer is a much later replacement& not accurate. The Reaumur temperature scale went out of favor in the late 18th Century so this may be early 19th Century. It is definitely quite old. A well crafted hardwood Atlatl foreshaft that is burnt on one end. My original thought is that it was fire hardened but on closer examination I noticed that it is simply burnt. It looks to me as if the dart was broken on impact and re-used as you can see impact wear on the broken end. The reason for the burnt end is unknown. Posted with

Most Central American Pre-Columbian cultures produced little in the way of large scale stone sculpture. Costa Rica is an exception to the rule in its seated figural works such as this one; these figures have been interpreted by contemporary indigenous populations as Sukia or Shamans. Pre-Columbian. From Costa Rica, Ca 800 to 1200 AD. Carved from local volcanic basalt, seated figure is shown in hunched pose A Pre-Columbian Stone Male Figure. C. 800-1500, Costa Rica, porous grey volcanic stone, yet very heavy in weight. Carved as a seated figure with arms resting on upright knees, height 5.25 inches. Purchased by me in 1968 in Washington. A wonderful. Vibrant, published and exhibited ancient Peruvian Nazca Earthenware vase, in the form of a decapitated trophy head, dating to approximately 125- 250 A.D. The vase with rounded base and globular body. Cylindrical neck and wide everted mouth. Skillfully molded and vividly decorated with the depiction of a decapitated trophy head. The ears and long, straight nose protruding from the pot, the head itself shown with closed eyes and long eyelashes, the mouth painted white and filled with black dots, the lips held shut with long black pins and the cheeks decorated with red face paint. Throughout human history man has. Perhaps unsurprisingly, placed a special importance on the head. The Nazca found this part of the body particularly significant with both their methods of warfare and their mythology being heavily focused on head hunting. ... moreHere, the unfortunate victim's lips have been pinned shut, a common practice which was believed to prevent the deceased's soul from harming the perpetrator. The ancient Nazca culture. Located on the Southern coast of Peru, existed from 370 B.C. through to 540 A.D. The period saw much development of the arts, perhaps most notably in the area of slip painting, as is evidenced in this piece. Ancient Peruvians left no written records, thus their material remains are the only existing link to this intriguing ancient culture. Height: 7 1/4 inches. Condition: Excellent condition; some small areas of retouching to paint. Small firing hole( to one side of body. Published: Full page illustration and description in. TAINO CELT-AXE: CEREMONIAL; HIGHLY POLISHED. 19th CENTURY PUERTO RICO Length: 8" Width: 2 1/2" Thick: 1 1/2" Weight: 1 lb 12 oz This amazingly polished/shaped CELT- axe was uncovered in 19th century Puerto Rico during field clearance. Kept over the years by the landowners descendants-who migrated to New York City- this outstanding artifact was found in a field outside the southern town of Coamo. Just off the current PR-556 roadway. The area around Coamo was a hot-bed of Taino activity(900 to 1500 AD) before the war-like Arawaks and Columbus messed things up. Farmers continue to pull out undocumented artifacts from that seemingly gentle. Peaceful people, who appeared to have a lot of time to make rather interesting personal stone tools/items. The axe shows a remarkable lack of heavy use. Aside from some side-surface dings/chips ... moreit is in excellent shape. Carved from a hard. White-streaked stone, the celt has been sweat polished to a gleaming shine and tapered to a point opposite the blade end. The condition. Form and overall attributes of this axe shout ceremonial usage. It was made NOT to cut down trees but to recognize some other more ethereal tradition. Perhaps a grave good for a wealthy resident; or maybe a special. Charmstone-axe used by Taino shamans for spiritual requests.

When Rain Gods Reigned. From Curios to Art at Tesuque Pueblo” By Duane Anderson. Published in Santa Fe by the Museum of New Mexico Press in 2002. description continues below the picture- DISCUSSION: Rain gods and their relatives developed out of an earlier tradition of larger hollow clay figurines. The earliest of which was collected at Tesuque Pueblo(New Mexico) in 1879. They continue to be produced at Tesuque Pueblo to this day, constituting the longest continuous figurative art tradition in the Southwest. This book traces the evolution of the rain god from tourist art to Indian self-identity and self-expression. Importantly, it studies a popular form that has heretofore failed to earn the serious attention of scholars and collecting institutions and further the discourse on how art is defined and valued” DESCRIPTION: Softcover. 9”x10” ... more143 pages, color and black& white illustrations. This is a reproduction of an original piece from the Tumaco culture. Which flourished between 500 BC and about 500 AD in what is the Pacific coastal area of southwestern Colombia. This piece represents the head of an Indian woman, intentionally separated from the body as part of a funeral rite. The ceremony had the implicit connotation, that when a human being dies, so does his control of thoughts and the mind. The artistic expression in these figures is realistic, keeping individual physical features, and becoming a living portrait. This particular woman wears a delicate headpiece, her large earrings in flower shape symbolize her capacity to'listen to others' and in her nose a beautiful gold'nariguera' that was used as a constant reminder of'el peso de la palabra' or the weight of our words, and the responsibility ... moreto use them wisely. The shape of the head, considered a trait of beauty, reveals the custom in this group of binding and molding the form of the skull while young. Little is known about these cultures that occupied the area in and near Colombia. The Tumaco and Tolita groups lived on what is today the Colombia/Ecuador border. And their civilizations flourished and faded from 500 BC to about 500 AD. As other groups from Colombia, they were excellent goldsmiths and ceramists, the pieces that have survived are of extraordinary beauty, and interesting in their diferences from other groups. Pieces are characteristically peaceful and serene in expression, and colors are a softer gray, due to the ash content of the clay in that region. As always, because of the abundance of gold in the area, once the Spaniards arrived, whole groups were wiped out to loot the treasures. This group's high point was long before this arrival, but much was lost from burial grounds that could have given clues to their existence. The legend of El Dorado fueled more and more exploration. Even today, burial grounds can be discovered and pillaged, leaving little to study. Ceramics that remain today are from t

Precolumbian head from Teotihuacán. Mexico(1) Precolumbian. Sculpted, ceramic head; most likely 500 A.D. or older(That is 1,000 years or more before Cortez invaded Mexico and conquered the Aztecs. The Aztecs, who arrived in the Valley of Mexico long after Teotihuacán was abandoned, named the ruins Teotihuacán- place of the gods. The Aztecs and the Greeks had the same word for gods- teo. 2) Dimensions. approximately 1 inch by 1" by half an inch" I apologize for not providing metric dimensions. I live in a country that clings to ancient English measuring systems instead of the clearly superior and much more functional metric system. 3) Medium. clay. Hard fired under great heat. 4) Provenance. I found this head(and other heads) in a farmer's field near the center of the ruins of Teotihuacán. Near Mexico City, ... morein 1966 or 1967, when I was an anthropology major at the Universidad de las Americas in Mexico City. Generally, these farmers' fields were rocky and dusty but rain would wash the dust off the rocks and reveal that some of them had faces- and were terracotta heads and not rocks. Many times, after a rain, I would take a bus from Mexico City to Teotihuacán, explore the farmers' fields, and look for those features that were not visible when covered with dust. In this way, I acquired dozens of precolumbian heads. How to distinguish an authentic precolumbian sculpture from a fake: 1) provinance; know the source; 2) study precolumbian anthropology; see what's in the museums and the books; 3) lick. Or otherwise wet, the object and see how long it takes to dry; ancient ceramics take a long time to dry because they are more porous than new ceramics. Views of this red head show front and back.

The Taino would induce vomiting with a swallowing or vomit stick such as this. The purpose was to purge the body of impurities, both a literal physical purging and a symbolic ... morespiritual purging. This beautifully piece was originally carved from the rib bone of a manatee. An animal much revered by the natives. The head is exquisitely carved in the form of a cayman. A close relative of the alligator and powerful spirit. The Taino respected all forms of life and recognized the importance of giving thanks as well as honoring ancestors and spiritual beings whom they called Cemi. The back of this piece is carved with a powerful animistic god-like or ancestor figure underneath which is carved what appears to be a god's eye image. Original pieces such as this are extremely rare and to our knowledge none have ever previously been replicated. Pre-Columbian TIANO CULTURE The Taino Culture evolved from an ancient tribal culture that had colonized Puerto Rico about 8.000 years ago. The Taino Culture began about 2.500 years ago. They developed a specialized relationship with this island. They cultivated Yucca and had a long special squeezing basket technique to extract the cyanide poison. Powder the extracted pulp in wooden mortars and store it for weeks. They also developed a large special basket to sink on the coral reefs to catch fish. They knew how to

Ancient Copan Ball court(Notice the 3 inset marker discs in center court floor) Limited Edition. Available Only from Echoes In Time) THE BALL GAME: Enjoy the ultimate life-or-death sport! Imagine football. Basketball, soccer, hockey all rolled into one extreme game. This exclusive ... moredisk is an accurate reproduction of the floor marker from an ancient ball court in the jungles of Honduras, placed there 1300 years ago by one of the greatest Mayan rulers, 18-Rabbit. The stakes of this ball game were literally life and death. Although the exact rules are shrouded in mystery, people played it avidly in nearly every Central and Meso-American city for over 1500 years. The game appears to have been played with a hard rubber ball roughly the size of a grapefruit(~8" in diameter) The object of the game was apparently to score points by getting the ball through a hole in a VERTICAL stone disc(such discs can be seen on both the left and right sides of center court in picture(b) above) It is also believed that the rules prohibited actually touching the ball with the hand or having the ball hit the ground. The buttocks, thighs and upper torso were used to control the ball. A thick heavy deflector called a'yoke' was often worn around the waist of a player to help direct the ball. While the importance and appeal of this game throughout all of Mexico and Central America(and perhaps beyond) is unquestioned. There appears to no uniform standards as to the layou
Authentic Pennsylvania Railroad Company cancelled stock certificate for 100 shares issued in the 1950's and 1960's. This is a real certificate. Not a copy or reproduction. The certificate has a beautiful vignette of the famous horseshoe curve in the center with allegorical figures on either side. The horseshoe curve's importance to railroad traffic in the U.S. was such that the Nazi's attempted to sabotage it in Operation Pastorius during World War II. The curve was designated as a National Historic Landmark in 1966. Certificate would make a fine addition to your collection or a great gift. Stock certificate collecting is becoming increasingly popular due to the historical significance of many of the companies and their increasing rarity. With the advent of electronic trading the issuance of stock certificates has decreased ... moremarkedly and accordingly should improve the value of these certificates over time. Nice looking certificate and is a great conversation piece of a famous company that eventually evolved into Penn Central, which prior to current events was one of the largest corporate bankruptcies. The certificate is in excellent condition(no folds, tears or marks) Each certificate has the normal punch cancellation and staple holes. Please review my feedback record and bid with confidence.

Patojo Pot from Ometepe Island. Nicaragua-Nicaro Culture 800-1200 A.D Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE This is a rare"patojo" pot from Ometepe Island. Nicaragua and made around 1000 years ago by the Nicaro culture(a branch of the Greater Nicoya Culture) Ometepe Island is located in Lake Nicaragua and it's name means two volcanoes. This is an interesting and rare piece of pre-Columbian pottery that it is decorated in the form of a guinea pig with eyes on either side and a snout at the tip of the pot. A"patojo" pot is called this because it is commonly made in the shape of a shoe, which is pronounced"patojo" in Spanish. These were made by pre-Columbian cultures all over the Americas and the reason for this is that these pots allowed the user to dip into the warm contents from the pot while the ... moreelongated end of the pot rested in a classic"comal" style oven. This anthropomorphic vessel has marks that represent the hair on the animal and that change at the tip to fit the face of the creature. This pot measures 6 3/4" X 4 3/4" with a height of 4" and the mouth of this pot is 3" wide. This piece has only got ships to the flared rim which still has red pigment on the top and seems to have black pigment on the underside. On the bottom of this piece the hash marks stop and on it are a collector's numbers. International buyers pay full cost of shipping. Whatever that might be. Please see my other auctions for more artifacts. Thanks for Looking!
