Up for sale is this very nice female Senufo Rythm pounder in good condition. It is missing the nose and top portion of the lip from use. Remember these ... morewere danced with and pounded and dropped on the ground. So a little damage would be typical. This does have remnants of gray paint that is seen in areas that are not touched. I believe that the oldest ones were painted. Check out the form. The stomach and chest are curved way out and rounded. I do see these with a curve, but a slight one. This is guaranteed original and tribal used. Measures 30" tall x 5 1/4" wide x 6" deep. See photos.

EXHIBITED large 25" Senufo helmet mask "Kopnyungo" Fire-spitter, no reserve
This is a large p olka dotte Senufo helmet mask"Kopnyungo" kno w in the West as a Fire-spitter. Very impressive array of tee th and tusks in nice contrast to two cute chameleons on top. In 2009 portions of my collection were exhibited at the University of Maryland's Mosely Gallery- the exhibition was called"Honoring the Ancestors. Only 170 of my 300+ items could fit in the gallery. This mask was exhibited in that exhibition. I have included photos of that installation as well as other items I am selling or will be selling soon. Janiform(meaning 2-faced) example would have been worn at Poro ceremonies including funerals and would also have fought sorcery( dee bele) and harmful spirits( nikw’abele) At the top of this helmet is a small cup held by two chameleons. The mask was not complete until magical substances( wah) were ... moreplaced into this receptacle. Additional Information: A superb piece. With matched four-horned faces on either side, one shared pair of ears, and paired figures on top pulling on the bowl which would have held magical elements. Red and white pigments have been applied over the black, but use has worn them away somewhat. Inner patina suggests wear. This large helmet mask known as"Kopnyungo. meaning literally a funeral head mask is worn by senior members of Poro at funerals of deceased and honored members. Large composite masks danced by the Senufo symbolically incorporate a number of different animal motifs to create an image that is aggressive and powerful. The crocodile mouth at the front of this mask incorporates warthog tusks coming out of the upper jaw represent the uncontrolled forces of the bush. This mask is most probably used by Senufo farmers and when worn the dancer would look out through the opening of the mouth. This is an excellent example of Senufo masks. Size: Height: 14.5" width: 25.5" depth: 9" 6 lbs Provenance- some of my items have solid provenance. Others like this do not. I will never make a claim a specific age or tribal usage unless I h

Exhibited Senufo Kpelie Mask Kepelie Kpeli-yehe Ivory Coast and Mali- no reserve
A beautifully symmetric Senufo Kpelie mask. The depiction of palm nuts at the top of the mask symbolize the wood carving profession. I purchased this three years ago from a private French collector. They described it as 19th century but I believe it is from the second half 20th century. I could be wrong. In 2009 portions of my collection were exhibited at the University of Maryland's Mosely Gallery- the exhibition was called"Honoring the Ancestors. Only 170 of my 300+ items could fit in the gallery. This mask was exhibited in that exhibition. You can see it hanging on the wall. I have included photos of that installation as well as other items I am selling or will be selling soon. This Kpeli-yehe mask combines elements of Senufo mythology and culturally known symbols. The horns are those of the powerful buffalo important to Poro ... moreinitiates. The small legs below the chin symbolize the hornbill bird. One of the Senufo primordial creatures and the first to be hunted by men. The heart-shaped face and protruding lips are style elements of Senufo sculpture. Kepelie masks would dance a funeral of elder women and men, the newly dead that have now joined the ancestors. The Senufo are a large dispersed population living primarily in Ivory Coast and Mali in small self-administered villages supporting themselves primarily as farmers. Though generally autonomous the villages are joined through a shared menâ's secret society known as Poro or Pondo that is responsible for the initiation of young boys and men into different levels of society and to exercise social control and instruct members and initiates in religious wisdom and knowledge of the bush spirits. Women have their counterpart to this ion their divination society known as Sando. 1920s? Senufo Kpelie Mask Kepelie Kpeli-yehe Ivory Coast and Mali - no reserve
A nice Senufo Kpelie mask with nice encrustation and wear. Great color. The hornbill depi cted o n the top of the mask is one of the first creatures on earth in Senufo mythology- is an important symbol for the Senufo and appears on many of their carvings. I purchased this from a British man who s aid his grandfather worked the dock in London in the 1920s and would by items from sailors returning from Africa. He said this was one such item. I have no idea i f that is true. Although it was always owned and worn by a man. Kpelie represented the concept of feminine beauty and fertility. The unique features which characterize the Kpelie mask include elongated flanges radiating from the bottom part of the mask, which are a reference to the hornbill bird. The horns on the mask refer to the ram. An important sacrificial animal. The nodules on the ... moreforehead represent palm nuts as well as vulvas; they are flanked by cicatrization marks that symbolize the twins born to the primordial couple. The Kpelie mask was used at initiation in the societies for boys. Adolescents, and adults, at funeral rituals designed to lead the spirit into the land of the dead, and at harvest festivals to thank the ancestors for a good crop. Kpelie- whether in carved wood or cast bronze copper alloy- are usually oval in shape with arched crescent shaped eyebrows over narrow slit eyes. The small mouth opens below a slender nose. Scarification marks add to presentation of what is considered beautiful to the Senufo. On either side of the temples are semicircular and rectangular shapes that represent the stylized coiffure worn by Senufo mothers; the center shapes at the side representing ears. Animal horns- bull. Ram or antelope- represent male attributes of the masquerade. There are often two appendages on either side of the chin, legs" that connect the spirit to the earth. Most important are the figures on the head, which represent an ancestor closely connected with the society's origin. The figures worn depend on the caste group to which the

The literal translation of"kponyungo" is"funeral head mask. and it is used not only for funerals but also for anti-witchcraft ceremonies. The mask combines the features of numerous important totem animals. Including antelopes, buffaloes, crocodiles, warthogs, hornbills, chameleons. Some scholars think the toothy mouth represents a baboon, others a crocodile. The mask is used to ward off the evil embodied by the forces of the bush. And is danced by the"Poro" as well as other societies. The Senufo are the dominant culture in Cote d'Ivoire, and they extend across the border into Mali. They have interminged with other peoples like the Bambara and Lobi, and some of their artworks show their influence. The Senufo carve numerous male and female figures in a variety of positions. As well as many remarkable masks. Most adhere rather strictly to a known set of proportions, but some can be quite abstract. It is thought that most important Senufo sculptures are produced by"professional" carvers known to the village, and this accounts for the rather standardized artistic traits

He holds mallets in either hand ... moreas he plays and wears a farmer’s hat to protect him from the sun. This is a scene that one can commonly see in the Western Sudan when musicians play for ceremonies. Ritual or simply to entertain. The balaphon is made of various sizes of wood that will produce a different tone when struck. Sometimes they have gourds tied under each piece of wood to resonate and echo the music as it it played. He is a Senufo by virtue of the three small scars radiating off of the corners of his mouth. The amulet worn around his neck to protect him indicates that he is also a Moslem. Mali: Extremly Rare African Tribal used mask from the Senufo.
Large Tribal used African mask from the Senufo. Mali. Hand carved from a single piece of wood. Height: 37 cm. During the 16th century. The Songye migrated from the Shaba area, which is now the southern part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Their history is closely linked to the Luba's, to whom the Songye are related through common ancestors. Having waged war against one another for a long time, the Songye and Luba later formed an alliance to fight the Arabs. They settled on the left bank of the Lualaba River, on a savanna and forest-covered plateau. Divided into many subgroups, the 150,000 Songye people are governed by a central chief assisted by innumerable secret societies. The Songye traditionally relied mostly on farming and hunting for subsistence. Because the rivers were associated with the spirits of deceased chiefs who ... morewere often buried in them. Fishing was not practiced except in times of great need. The artistic wares of the Songye, including pottery made by women and weaving and metalworking done by men, were traded extensively with their neighbors.

This large bowl comes from the Senufo people. The figures have the hallmarks of classic Senufo sculpture in terms of details and style and imagery in association with figures. The bowl could have served as a container and used for various ceremonies. It was probably used as a utensil commissioned by a priest to carry magic objects or ingredients used in rituals. Whatever its use and ceremonial appearance this object is a beautifully carved figure which reflects the skill and aesthetic sensibilities of the Senufo carver. Recommended Reading: Glaze. Collectable Senufo Equestrian Figure, Burkina Faso / Ivory Coast
The Senufo produce a rich variety of sculptures. Mainly associated with the poro society. The sculptors and metalsmiths. Endogamous groups responsible for making the cult objects live on their own in a separate part of the village. The attitude shown toward them by other Senufo is a mixture of fear and respect, owing to their privileged relationship with the natural forces that they are capable of channeling in a sculpture. During initiations, headpieces are worn that have a flat, vertical, round or rectangular board on top decorated with paint or pierced work. Many wood carvings of male figures depict these headpieces, sometimes on rhythm pounders used by young initiates, who beat the earth to call upon the ancestors to take part in the ceremony and purify the earth. The carvers also produce ritual female statues. Including mother-and-child ... morefigures, as well as statuettes depicting bush spirits and supernatural beings and equestrian figures. Large statues representing hornbills(often seen also on masks) and used in the lo society as symbols of fertility are the standing birds called porpianong. Figures of the hornbill are used in initiation. And groups of birds on a pole are trophies for the best farmer. Figures of male and female twins and of horsemen are used in divination. These represent the spirit familiars enabling the divination process. The diviners themselves are women, forming the sandogo society. Shrine doors and drums are carved in relief. And small figures and ritual rings are cast in bronze. Carved approximately late 1970"s, early 1980's. Measures 9" by 19"
