The Grebo live in southeast Liberia at the border with the Ivory Coast. With the Bassa people on their west and the Bete and We to their east in the Ivory Coast. Grebo masks are best known for their influence on early western modern art being found in the collection of Picasso who obtained a Grebo mask from his dealer Kahnweiler in Paris. There is no doubt as to the influence of the Grebo style mask upon the development of western art for they are a complete example of geometry in sculpture with the flat face, square mouth, rounded forehead, triangular nose and tubular eyes. The startling geometry of this mask with the double lines of tube shaped eyes each, flanking the strong profile of the nose under the large bulging forehead and protruding lips is indeed a tour-de-force of sculpture. Little is known about the use of masks among the Grebo other than the fact that they are said to have been worn during wars by leaders as a kind of military costume. The cheeks and eyes, and prominent open jaw showing teeth made of animal bones are common traits on the chimpanzee masks of these peoples. The triangular holes under the beneath of eyebrows are typical of the Grebo. And the horns to the top are also found on the Mano masks. The surface shows evidences of long use and some age! This piece is unique by its forms, its projecting open mouth, and its horns. Among the Dan masks of this type belongs to the category of Gagon masks also known as judge masks. Gagon masks were used to maintain social order in the community. Little is known about the use of such masks among the Grebo. Most of the Grebo masks of this kind were worn by leaders as a kind of military costume during a time of war. The masks were worn to terrify the enemy. Though not worn for warfare today they are worn at the funeral ceremonies of elders. This mask was worn on the face as seen in the eyeholes drilled on either side of the nose. Pigments, feathers, Approximate Age, Mid 20th century, Dimensions, 26 inches H. x 9.5 inches W. Overall Condition, good. Most of our pieces have spent decades on at least two continents. And have been treasured by several owners.  Small splits, scrapes and cracks are a normal part of their patina attesting to their age and extensive use. We examine each piece carefully when we receive it and report any damage we find in our listings. Please look carefully at the pictures which may also reveal condition and damage. Large chips in one side, missing feathers, old insect damage arrested, Additional Information: A stunning Grebo ... moremask with a large face and six tubular eyes. Morphological characteristic this mask included a large forehead divided in two by a carved crest with small version of the mask in each section. This crest is extended by the long and large nose. The protruding mouth competes with the tubular eyes. The mask is painted in white. The top is decorated with feathers. The startling geometry of this mask with the double lines of 3 tubes each. Flanking the strong profile of the nose and protruding lips is indeed a tour-De-force of sculpture. The Grebo live in southeast Liberia at the border with the Ivory Coast. With the Bassa people on their west and the Bete and We to their east in the Ivory Coast. Grebo masks are best known for their influence on early western modern art being found in the collection of Picasso who obtained a Grebo mask from his dealer Kahnweiler in Paris. There is no doubt as to the influence of the Grebo style mask upon the development of western art for they are a complete example of geometry in sculpture with the long face, a long nose and tubular projectiles.
