Grebo masks are best known for their influence on early western modern art being found in the collection of Picasso who obtained a Grebo mask from his dealer Kahnweiler in Paris. The startling geometry of this mask with the double lines of tube shaped eyes each, flanking the strong profile of the nose under the large bulging forehead and protruding lips is indeed a tour-de-force of sculpture. Little is known about the use of masks among the Grebo other than the fact that they are said to have been worn during wars by leaders as a kind of military costume. The masks were worn by the leaders of a warrior’s age set lead and terrify the enemy. Though not worn for warfare today they are worn at the funeral ceremonies of

The cheeks and eyes, and prominent open jaw showing teeth made of animal bones are common traits on the chimpanzee masks of these peoples. The triangular holes under the beneath of eyebrows are typical of the Grebo. And the horns to the top are also found on the Mano masks. The surface shows evidences of long use and some age! This piece is unique by its forms, its projecting open mouth, and its horns. Among the Dan masks of this type belongs to the category of Gagon masks also known as judge masks. Gagon masks were used to maintain social order in the community. Little is known about the use of such masks among the Grebo. Most of the Grebo masks of this kind were worn by leaders as a kind of military costume during a time of war. The masks were worn to terrify the enemy. Though not worn for warfare today they are worn at the funeral ceremonies of elders. This mask was worn on the face as seen in the eyeholes drilled on either side of the nose. Giant Dan-Grebo Bird African Mask from Liberia Good Luck Mask Masquerade
Truly Amazing Huge Bird Masquerade from the Dan Tribe of Liberia. Joyous mask. Thought to bring Good luck! Although the Dan tribe has mighty warriors. This mask is Joyous and brings good luck. And HUGE! 22" Long. 9" deep and 11" Wide. My daughter is 6 foot tall. In the photo and you can see how big it is compared to her! I know you will love this one! In my opinion. The Dan tribe has the most amazing and spiritual art. They know how to shape masks in a way that is like no other! More about the tribe: The stark faces of Dan masks easily distinguish them among African art. The Dan have inhabited the Ivory Coast and Liberia since the 18th century B.C. A loose confederation ... moreof villages totaling some 350.000 individuals, they have spent much of their history battling neighboring tribes and sometimes each other. This gave them a ferocious reputation as each Dan warrior sought tin: individual prestige or glory. In former times tin was available through bravery in war; but the encroachment of colonial governments, and increased centralization has made tribal conflicts less common. Today's young Dan warrior must find his tin through other pursuits. Unity was finally brought to the Dan people with the institution of the Leopard Society or Go in the late 1800s.

Grebo Carved Wood War Mask Tribal African Art
Grebo War Mask- Liberia- This powerful mask was created by the Grebo people who inhabit the coastal region and neighboring forests of eastern Liberia. Africa. Unlike most other ethnic groups in Liberia, the Grebo do not follow the Poro societal structure. Instead they are ruled by a chief known as'bodio' who doubles as a grand priest, and lives in near total isolation from the rest of the society. The Grebo believe their masks incarnate the spirits of the invisible world who live in the forest, and designed them with characteristic polychrome painting. Their war masks symbolized the implacable nature of battle, and were designed to terrify viewers. They were often carved with several sets of tubular projecting eyes, which suggests they may have been depicting seers. War masks were typically used to inspire Grebo warriors to fight ... moreand to greet warriors returning from successful raids, as well as playing a role in warrior funerals. European artists were entranced by the reversals of positive and negative forms on these striking yet elegantly beautiful masks. This piece features a long, thin nose which mirrors the slight curve of the mask, a protruding mouth with barred teeth, and holes at the top which hold several feathers. Provenance: These pieces were collected over a period of several decades out of collections from America and throughout Europe, including France, Germany, Belgium, and Amsterdam beginning in the early 1960s. The items in this collection have been identified by George Mack, former director of the Arizona African Art Museum. A fantastic piece that's perfect for your collection!
