Good.see images) The Yoruba are known for their extraordinarily high rate of multiple births and one of the highest in the world as regards twin birth. At one point in the past twins known as Ibeji. Were thought by the Yoruba to be evil and were quickly killed as they were considered to be monsters and abnormal. However, a cult of twins developed in which the twins were now seen to be minor deities who blessed their families with good fortune. The death of either of the twins or both is thought to be calamitous for the family that must be remedied by appeasing the soul of the deceased child through the carving of a figure put in the care of the mother who will treat the small wooden figure as though it were the deceased twin and alive. Ere ibeji are also identified with the Yoruba Thunder God Shango who is known by red and blue beads as worn by this old figure around the waist. In earlier times. New-born twins, or ibeji, as they are called, were believed to be evil, monstrous abnormalities and infanticide was a common practice. However, such beliefs and practices were later superseded and reversed, and by the middle of the 18th century twins came to be seen as a blessing; they were awarded the status of minor deities, called Orishas, and their arrival was viewed as an omen of good fortune for the family. By the 19th century the cult of the Ere Ibeji was firmly established and continues to this day. Nigeria: Rare Tribal used african Habit for twins figure from the Ibeji
Rare Tribal used african Habit for twins figure from the Ibeji. Height: 22 x18 cm. The Yoruba of central Nigeria have an extremely a high number of twin births(4.5% compared to other populations. Especially those of western Europe and the United States. There are a few theories, including the hypothesis that the yam has something to do with it, but I don´t believe that this has much evidence to support it. In many African tribal societies, twins were seen as a signs of impending bad fortune and were killed after birth. The Yoruba people, on the other hand, believe that twins are the bearer of magic power and might, and need a special kind of attention from the family and the society of the village.

In this way, the soul could remain balanced for the surviving individual. In the event that both twins were to die, a commemorative set of figures would be commissioned. The figures are, stylistically, produced similarly to other figures in Yoruba culture, but the young are generally depicted as adults, in the artist's interpretation of features po

Lot 116, Ibeji Male & Female Pair with Multi Color Beads, Yoruba / Santeria
Here is a fine example of an exceptionally carved Ere Ibeji Male& Female pair from Nigeria. Measuring approximately 10" by 4" Carved mid to late 1990's. Adorned with muti color beads, brass rings and covered with blue indigo powder(protective powder) When the carving of the Ere Ibeji is completed. The artist is given a feast and payment as determined by the Orishas. Once the figure is brought to the family dwelling, it is placed on a shrine dedicated to Elegba with the hope that the Orisha or soul, which was split in two parts when the twins were born, will now again reside in the figure that represents the dead twin. The sculpted figure is treated and cared for as if it were alive. It is rubbed in sacramental oil, washed, fed, clothed, sung to and prayed to. It is kept standing during the day, and is laid down at night. ... moreOften it will be dressed in the same clothing as the living twin, or be decorated in a beaded vest or shown with raised sandals, indicating possible royal connections. The responsibility of caring for the ibeji is borne by the mother and female family members of subsequent generations. The sculpture is expected to avert evil from the household, strengthen the manifestations of family love, stare down death, illuminate the pathway through the valley of immortality, and bring good fortune to all who treat it with respect and offer it tokens of affection. Conversely, bad fortune and curses may be engendered if the ibeji is ignored. Bid with confidence. No reserves! P lease see my other auctions for great deals.

Ibeji are considered sacred children thought to be the bearers of magic power and might amoung the Yoruba. The Yoruba people of central Nigeria have an amazingly high rate of twin births. Twins or one of the pair sometimes die prematurely, which is not unusual due to the high child mortality rate in Africa. Sometimes circumstances would call for an Ere Ibeji which is a memorial figure to be carved of the deceased twins or twin. These Ere Ibeji figures are cared for by the mother and they are oiled, dressed, decorated with beads, fed, washed, sung to and otherwise treasured and taken care of. This lavish attention and honoring of the spirit of the departed twin or twins symbolizes the families love for the departed twin or twins and ... morealso assures a good future free from tragedy for the other family members. This pair of ibeji twin memorial figures I am offering are decorated with beads and blue indigo has been rubbed on their well polished bodies. One figure is a carving of a female twin and the other is a carving of a male twin both are carved as small children having adult attributes. The female memorial figure has damage to both ears one of which is missing. The male figure measures 8.65 inches tall. This fine pair of Yoruba ere ibeji twins are very beautiful and would make a fine addition to any African culture collector's treasure trove. Rare Antique One of a Kind Yoruba Pair of Ibeji Twin Figures With Cowried Jacket
Title Yoruba Pair of Ibeji Twin Figures With old Jacket sNigeria African Type of Object Carving Country of Origin Nigeria People Yoruba Materials Wood. raffia fibers, cowrie shells, cotton cloth, pigment Approximate Age first half 20th century Dimensions figures: A Yoruba pair of twin figurs wearing a jacket made out of cotton cloth decorated with cowrie shells. The Yoruba of Nigeria and of the Benin Republic are known for having an extraordinarily high rate of multiple births. In earlier times, new-born twins, or ibeji, as they are called, were believed to be evil, monstrous abnormalities and infanticide was a common practice. However, such beliefs and practices were later superseded and reversed, and by the middle of the 18th century twins came to be seen as a blessing; they were awarded the status of minor deities, called Orishas, ... moreand their arrival was viewed as an omen of good fortune for the family. By the 19th century the cult of the Ere Ibeji was firmly established and continues to this day. The death of one or both twins is regarded as a great calamity for the family, one which requires immediate appeasement of the soul of the deceased child. Though the cause of the high rate of twin births among Yoruba women has not been established, the cultural grieving process is well documented and may be observed in the carving of a figure known as Ere Ibeji, which both represents the lost child and serves as a ritual point of contact with the soul of the deceased. The carving of the Ere Ibeji is commissioned under the guidance of an Ifa diviner, a Babalowo, whom the parents consult in selecting the particular artist who will do the work. The sculpture itself represents a deceased infant, but is carved with features and attributes of an adult. The sculptural features of genitalia, pubic hair, wide hips, developed breasts, gender specific facial scarification and mature coiffures exude an erotic sexuality, uncommon for infants. As Dr. Moyo Okediji notes, the completed ibeji figure is carved as an adult, rather

Fine Antique Pair of Yoruba Ibeji Statuettes Oyo style - Nigeria
This is a fine pair of Ibeji statuettes from the Yoruba tribe in Southern Nigeria. Ibeji statuettes were carved upon the passing of a twin– so as to honor the spirit of the passed– and kept by the surviving twin. Until their own death, at which time the statuette was considered to lose its power. Ibeji statuettes exist in great variations of styles– which are traceable in part to the region of origin but also to the family lineage and its cult. The pair here is made of a female and a male. Both show beautiful characteristics. The elevated hairdo is made of four lobes(with interesting triangular motives in between) Which is typical of the Oyo region in Northern Yoruba land. The face is calm. Expressive and smiling with diamond shape eyes and low, pointy ears. Scarifications are comprised of a mix of vertical and horizontal lines. The body ... moreis well proportioned. With round shoulders and large arms. There is also a nice intricate triangular scarification work on the belly(the recurring use of triangular motive is noticeable on this pair) The legs are short. And compact– and actually pretty large, with protruding bottoms. Both statuettes show an extraordinary very dark. Shiny patina– which makes for very old pieces, I believe probably late 19 th/early 20 th c. Dimensions are 11x3.
