Lega Idimu Mask- Democratic Republic of Congo Mid 20th Century. Original Wood. Vegetal fibers, pigment, patina Height 22.8cm( 9in) without raffia collar ... moreKudi Gallery Collection. Provincetown, MA Ex-Private Collection. Naples, FL, 2006 Acquired at auction in Naples. Florida. Detailed provenance documentation on file and can accompany the artifact for historical conservation purposes In the 16th century the Lega began their long migration from modern day Uganda into their present location. They were a warlike people whose fierceness inspired those. With whom they came into contact, to adopt many Lega customs. In the 17th century they attacked the Rwandan outpost of Rutshurer on their way to Maniema, just west of Lake Tanganyika, dividing and conquering the people who lived in the region. Many cultural traits have been assimilated into the surrounding cultures, and the Lega still dominate the region today. The Bwami society is the context for the production of most Lega art work, which includes wooden statuettes and masks. Lega masks fall into the category of Bwami initiation objects. The Lega further divide them into five types according to material, size, and form: lukwakongo, kayam-ba, idimu, muminia, and lukungu(Biebuyck 1973,164) They serve as an important mark of rank, identifying the owners as members of specific Bwami levels. This serene Lega mask was formerly of a private Naples family collection. The auction specialist noted the consignor's father was an avid collector of African art and purchased the mask in 2006 from the Kudi Gallery in Provincetown. The mask has some minor age cracks and chips. All stable and typical of traditional use. Good condition. Appropriate for age, origin and medium. Reference a close example from the Fowler Museum Collection in Los Angeles. CA(see last photo or reference on the Fowler Museum Website) WE WILL SHIP WORLDWIDE* If you are outside the USA. This African mask belongs to the category of muminia, rarely encountered and very little represented in the collections of African art. Compared to lukwakongo ... moretype masks, this one has larger dimensions. These masks are used during the initiations leading to the second grade of the highest bwami of the lutumbo lwa yananio ranks. The guardian of this mask was an initiate of the highest level of the second highest grade of the Bwami. He belonged to the Banamusiga groups, a lineage group incorporated in the Beiankuku. This mask was an object of "collective ownership" as the only one of its kind in a large ritual community, comprising eight ritually related clans. This mask has been transmitted over several generations by narrow, direct and agnatic descent.

They are highly hierarchical, their members passing from one level to the next. There is strong social pressure toward individual distinction, and men can move upward through successive grades by demonstrating their achievements and their generosity. The lack of overall centralization among the Igbo-speaking peoples has been conducive to the development of a great variety of art styles and cultural practices. Many cultural traits have been assimilated into the surrounding ... morecultures, and the Lega still dominate the region today. ANTIQUE AFRICAN LEGA MASK Beautiful mask from the Lega tribe. This mask was appraised at $7.000. I obtained this piece from a woman whose husband and her traveled extensively in Africa. The Congo Collection: Rare & Fantastic Museum-quality Lega Bwami Mask - Zaire
This is an auction for a very special. Double-faced Lega mask. It measures 10.5 inches in height by 9 inches in width and has a fine aged patina. This mask came from a remote area of the DRC(Zaire) located approximately 150 kilometers west of Lake Kivu. Lega masks with heart-shaped facial regions are referred to as Lukwakongo. When this museum-grade Lukwakongo was originally collected in 1973. It already had decent age. It came from an important group of seven Lega masks(see pic) which I personally acquired in the D.R.C. last year. This mask was a twin to one of the masks in the collection. The original 6 will stay together(on my wall) as a group, whilst number 7 shall be orphaned out to a lucky new owner. Despite the fact that the mask displays signs of being extremely old. It is in decent shape. There are two very fine, age-related cracks ... morewhich run from the edge of the mask to the“lower lips” of the two mouths. The cracks are not visible to the casual observer especially when the mask is hanging on the wall. Both of the heart shaped faces are very heavily coated with layers of calcined kaolin clay pigment and it is apparent that the eye and mouth configuration of this particular mask reflect some Mitoko/Mituku elements. This particular museum-grade mask is 55 to 65 years old. And shows indications of substantial weatherization, wear and handling. It is becoming increasingly difficult to obtain these authentic items. Especially those with substantial age. Presently, many of the African“antiquities” posted on E-Bay are much newer than their description would indicate. In contrast. BACKGROUND The Lega ... moreinhabit the virgin forest of eastern DRC. Between the great lakes and the Lualaba River, next to Luba people. The Lega do not possess a centralized political organization, and both men and women aspire to moral authority by gaining high rank in the Bwami association. They live in the autonomous villages collectively situated at the summit of a hill surrounded by a palisade. They practice a mixed economy involving agriculture, hunting and fishing. Division of labor is gender based and akin to the economic patterns of other tribes living in the forest environment. Men hunt and clear new land and women cultivate manioc and other crops. The function of the Bwami is to regulate the social, religious, and political life of the Lega. It is conveying ethical principles and establishing social norms. Circumcision was an indispensable process that allowed entrance into the Bwami. It was accompanied by the teaching of proverbs and instruction in the handling of objects endowed with moral and practical significance. The Bwami was divided into several levels. To pass to the next level, a series of initiations, gifts, and payments were needed; and this meant that one had attained a cer

Origin: Democratic Republic of Congo(see ethnographical notes below) Provenance: Private Collection. Melbourne, Australia. About The Lega Tribe The 100.000 to 250,000 Lega inhabit the virgin forest of eastern DRC, between the great lakes and the Lualaba River, next to Luba people. The Lega do not possess a centralized political organization, and both men and women aspire to moral authority by gaining high rank in the bwami association. They live in the autonomous villages collectively situated at the summit of a hill surrounded by a palisade. They practice a mixed economy involving agriculture. Hunting and fishing. Division of labor is gender based and akin to the economic patterns of other tribes living in the forest environment: ... moremen hunt and clear new land and women cultivate manioc and other crops. The function of the bwami is to regulate the social. Religious, and political life of the Lega. It is conveying ethical principles and establishing social norms. Circumcision was an indispensable process that allowed entrance into the bwami. It was accompanied by the teaching of proverbs and instruction in the handling of objects endowed with moral and practical significance. The bwami was divided into several levels. To pass to the next level. A series of initiations, gifts, and payments were needed; and this meant that one had attained a certain wisdom and acquired a personal moral sense. The great ceremonies organized for the accession to the highest level would require that entire villages be constructed to house the clan of the candidate and members of the other clans who often came from very far away to participate in the festivities. The objects are frequently moved around in various containers and grouped in large number for ceremonial displays; for this reason. There is no large Lega art. Originally Lega art was primarily wooden. But little by little, ivory came into use. Later ma

Vintage, Unique Lega Bwani Mask with 4 Eyes/10 1/2"H
Unique. Vintage Bwani mask, from the Lega people of Zaire(the Democratic Republic of the Congo) Wood with original, aged white, hardened pigment which is worn off the nose and brow areas of the face from age and use; 4 open, slit eyes; holes around edge with some type of flat plant material wrapped through them; rectangular mouth with serated teeth on the bottom, and seration as well inside the top of the four eyes; oval shaped mask but eyebrows give it the heart shape of traditional Lega masks; 10 1/2" H. A beautiful. Old, unusual, and I would guess rare"4 eye" mask that I haven't seen in my research of Lega material. I have seen several double face Lega masks and perhaps there is some relationship between these and the one mask with four eyes. Maybe someone more versed in Lega materia could answer this.
