The Sumbanese can easily be recognised by their clothing. The men wear an ikat sarong, a“hinggi” around their hips and they wear a belt with a sword in it. They have a bandeau made of ikat around their head. The ikat is printed with animal and human motives. Horse and chiken are often used for the textile. Another feature from Sumbanese is that they are excellent horsemen. Horse is an asset for them and as a symbol of prosperity and strength. Children have learned to ride a horse when they were very young. As adult they show their talent annually with the traditional pasola war. This overall very attractive large textile exposes a number of very casual inconsistencies in the pattern which means that it was not made for sale on tourist markets. I offer: one necklace neckwear from Flores. Lesser Sumba Islands. This rare traditional necklace was used during special ceremonies and celebrations and worn by important headmen from the Ngada tribes of Flores, Lesser Sumba Islands, Indonesia. It consists of a hand-woven rattan neckband decorated with smaller cowries with larger old cowries surrounding it. The large egg cowries have great age and patina and were salvaged from an older piece as they are passed on when the weave deteriorates. Collected in the 70’s. Diameter 20 cm.

TRIBAL ART A most amazing Onyx stone and Water Buffalo bone ceremonial axe we have yet seen. From West Sumba Indonesia. The whole axe is so different from any ceremonial axe we have seen in six years of trading. The bone carving is a beautiful work of art. Circa 1960's era. The large stone axe head is a rare Onyx imported from central Java. The large axe head has two small age related chips. And measures approx 5.5 inches- 14 cm across. The handle is carved from a huge Water Buffalo mouth piece. And measures 15.5 inches- 39.5 cm long. This was purchased from a private Indonesian collection. Comes with a custom made display stand.
