This is a nice antique African hand carved statue. Not exactly sure what country is from, but it is in good overall condition, considering its age. Entirely ... morehandcarved, and it is definitely old. Came from a big-time antique collector from San Francisco that specialize in African antiques. This came from his estate auction. Take a look at all the photos to see general condition. You can take a look at the bottom. The original price paid for it was $1300 as an antique already. And this was probably 40 or more years ago adjusted for inflation that’s almost $5000 today maybe more.

Read more about the culture behind these masks by visiting the website Zyama(dot com) An excerpt from this site appears below. This seller is not affiliated ... morewith the operator of the Zyama site. The Bambara numbering 2.500.000 million form the largest ethnic group within Mali. The triangle of the Bambara region, divided in two parts by the Niger River, constitutes the greater part of the western and southern Mali of today. The dry savanna permits no more than a subsistence economy, and the soil produces, with some difficulty, corn, millet, sorghum, rice, and beans. Their traditions include six male societies, each with its own type of mask. Initiation for men lasts for seven years and ends with their symbolic death and their rebirth. Nearly every Bambara man had to pass through these societies in succession, until, upon reaching the highest rank, he had acquired a comprehensive knowledge of ancestral traditions. The jo society has become a sort of framework for other initiation society. Until a few decades ago. Initiation was obligatory for every young man. Jo initiations take place every seven years, after candidates receive six years of special training. During this time, the young men go through a ritual death and live one week in the bush before returning to the village. There they publicly perform the dances and songsthey have learned in the bush, and receive small presents from spectators. After a ritual bath that signals the end of their animal life, the new initiates become“Jo children. Initially the ntomo was a society for uncircumcised boys. Today it closely resembles various Western associations in its bureaucratic structure and its administrative and membership fees. There are two main style groups of their masks. One is characterized by an oval face with four to ten horns in a row on top like a comb. Often covered with cowries or dried red berries. The other type has a ridged nose, a protruding mouth, a superstructure of vertical horns, in the middle of which or in front of which is a standing fi

The Dan and other Mande-speaking peoples ... moremigrated from North Africa to the present-day Mali and Guinea several hundred years ago and then into their current locations in Liberia and the Ivory Coast, invading the coastal region, replacing some of the Atlantic tribes and pushing back the Kru. Their waring skills were and strategies were more superior to those tribes they conquered from East Africa to today West Africa-specifically, Nimba County, Liberia. In the midst of migration, as some members of the Dan tribe also known as Beta Israel, many cultural practices changed over time. Some of their chief warriors were: Grougbay Zobaneeay who fought and pushed the tribes that once live in the present day Nimba County. To as far as Loguatuo in Côte d'Ivoire. AFRICAN ART BAMBARA MARCA 18" WOOD and METAL MASK from MALI AFRICA_Collectible!
Read more about the culture behind these masks by visiting the website Zyama(dot com) An excerpt from this site appears below. This seller is not affiliated with the operator of the Zyama site. Nearly every Bambara man had to pass through these societies in succession, until, upon reaching the highest ... morerank, he had acquired a comprehensive knowledge of ancestral traditions.

Exquiste Bambara Gwan Male Figure, Mali
In traditional African societies. A childless marriage is a grave problem. Further, childlessness seems to be the wife’s problem to resolve. Women with fertility and childbearing problems in Bambara society affiliate with gwan. An association that is especially concerned with such problems. Women who avail themselves of its ministrations and who succeed in bearing children make extra sacrifices to gwan, dedicate their children to it. And name them after the sculptures associated with the association. Gwan sculptures occur in groups and are normally enshrined. An ensemble includes a mother-and-child figure. The father, and several other male and female figures. They are considered to be extremely beautiful. They illustrate ideals of physical beauty and ideals of character and action. The figures are brought out of the shrine to appear in annual ... morepublic ceremonies. At such times, the figures are washed and oiled and then dressed in loincloths, head ties, and beads, all of which are contributed by the women of the village. The size of the statues may vary from 12 inches to 4 feet. The figures are usually with a dignified air. Some have the arms separated from the body, flat palms facing forward, the hands sometimes attached to the thighs. They may have crest-like hairdos with several braids falling on their breasts. In the same style, representations of musicians and of lance-carrying warriors are found. There are also carvings with Janus head. Ancestor figures of the Bambara clearly derive from the same artistic tradition, as do many of those of the Dogon. Rectangular intersection of flat planes is a stylistic feature common to Bambara and Dogon sculpture. This wonderful male Bambara is secured on a beautiful wooden base. Measures 28 3/4" by 5"

African mud cloth bogolan bambara bogolanfini handmade textile fabric
If you have never experienced authentic African mud cloth. You are in for a rare experience! Real mud cloth is one of the very few fabrics which is still completely made by hand! And we do mean completely! THIS FABULOUS MUDCLOTH MEASURES 69.5" X 48.5" Mudcloth is a fabric originating in Mali. Africa. The cotton is often raised on small, family farms, using very simple, labor intensive methods. After being picked and cleaned, it is spun into rough yarns. These fibers are woven into 5-6 inch wide strips, traditionally by the men of the village, on hand looms. Not only is this time-consuming, but you need 7-10 strips, each around 5-6 feet long, in order to create an average size fabric piece! The strips are sewn together, and here, we admit, is where a machine may come into use. Sometimes the strips are connected by a worker with a ... morehand operated sewing machine, sometimes by a sewer. Notice that either method is still done by hand. Before decorating. The cloth is soaked in a tea from the N'Galaman or N'Tjankara trees, or occasionally other types. This stain acts like a fixative for the colors to come and may give the fabric a tannish background shade. It's also where the alternative term of"bogolan" originated. Now prior to this, dyes from boiling, mashing, and fermenting of various roots, leaves, flowers, stems, fruits, and seeds, are mixed with mud and allowed to age, often for up to a year, until they reach the correct colors. Each artist has his or her own carefully guarded formulas for the hues, and secret spots for procurring the muds. Hence the"mud cloth" term. This process may take years for the creators to learn, as not only dyes, but also their reactions with cloth and fixatives must be known. Traditionally, this was done by the women of the village, but nowadays men also do the designing. These pastes are individually applied, washed off, and often reapplied according to the artist's desire. Various layers and combinations are used. Occasionally the work is soa

African Chiwara - Bambara Tribe Sculpture, 2 Roan Antelopes- Doe and Calf
Chiwara Bambara Tribe Sculpture Verti cal Style Two Roan Antelopes. Doe and Calf 4" x 5" x 40" A Chiwara(also Chi wara. Ci Wara. Or Tyi Wara) is a ritual object representing an antelope. Used by the Bambara ethnic group in Mali. The Chiwara initiation society uses Chiwara masks. As well as dances and rituals associated primarily with agriculture, to teach young Bamana men social values as well as agricultural techniques. The Chi Wara itself is usually represented as a Roan Antelope with an almost human face. But also takes shapes of other creatures and emblems of farming. The hero descends from the sky goddess, and thus represents the sun, its body is often elongated and short legged to represent the aarkvark who burrows into the earth like a farmer. Its high horns echo the stalks of millet. And it stands on a dancer clad in ... morea mass of raffia stalks to represent both flowing water and a bountiful harvest. The zig-zag patterns echo the movement of the sun across the sky. And the penis of the male figure stands low to the ground, fertilizing the earth. The Chi Wara figures always appear as a male/female pair, combining the elements of fertility of humans with fertility of the earth. The female figure usually carries a young antelope on her back, and is said to represent human beings carried by the Chi Wara hero, as well as a newborn human carried on a mother's back. The appearance of the Chiwara form varies greatly both by region and time produced. Specific master wood carvers also subtly modified the accepted(or even religiously mandated) local forms. Forming a distinct"signature" or"school" of Chiwara figures. These regional variations have been roughly assigned the stylistic categories above. Thus the Bougouni/ Southern region style are an amalgam of several animal motifs combined in the same work. In an abstract style; the Bamako/ Northern region style is usually of the horizontal style; the Segu/ Northern region style(the heartland of the Bambara Empire) matches the vertic

Bambara Tchi Wara(or Tji-Wara. Chi Wara) Antelope Headdress- Mali Early-Mid 20th Century. Original Wood. Metal, cloth, leather, cowrie shell, pigment, patina Length 60.9cm( 24in) Property from a Wilmington Collection in Delaware Detailed provenance documentation on file and can accompany the artifact for historical conservation purposes. In Africa. Animal imagery is used to teach moral and historical lessons. Distinctive physical or behavioral traits may be combined to create mythical creatures with greater powers. These Bamana crest masks combine the horns of the antelope, the body of the aardvark and the textured skin of the pangolin-all animals that dig in the earth. Despite regional stylistic differences, they all represent Chi Wara, the supernatural being who taught people to farm. Young men wear paired male and female masks in dances ... morethat praise and encourage good farmers. However, because of the introduction of the yoked plow, conversion to Islam and changes in patterns of employment and schooling, the performances have become increasingly more of a popular entertainment than an initiation society ceremony. This wonderful Chi Wara headdress was acquired from a Wilmington collector who amassed a large collection West African materials. Appropriate of age, origin and medium. Reference comparable examples Dance Headdress(Ci-wara Kun) Accession Number 1989.51.51, Bamana, 20th Century, Brooklyn Museum, New York, and Crest mask, Accession No. 2005-6-13 6, Bamana peoples, Mali, 19th-20th Century, National Museum of African Art, Washington, DC. Their traditions include six male societies, each with its own type of mask. Initiation for men lasts for seven years and ends with their symbolic death and their rebirth. Bambara Sculpture of Mother and Daughter - From Mali
My wife and I collected this magnificent piece during our stint in Mali between 1991-3. Although we were told that it was old. I, frankly, have no evidence that it more than 22 years of age; it may well be. Nonetheless, it is a beautifully carved piece of hard wood, amazingly expressive of emotion in both the mother and child. The piece stands 20 inches tall and weight 5 pounds, 10 ounces. If you would like additional photos, please let me know. Returns gladly accepted.

Rare Bronze Cast Alligator Granary Door Lock/Dogon? Bambara?, Mali
Unusual and rare cast bronze Dogon? or Bambara? alligator image door lock. From Mali, used to lock the granary bins/rooms there. This is the only metal lock I have seen, either in books or on the internet, since most are wood. An African trader friend who has been in the business for 30+ years agrees that he has never seen a bronze one either, and states that it is unique. Alligator: 12" L; Old patina and evidence of age on the metal; Two holes drilled in the alligator and two in the back part that may be later additions since I bought the piece from a collection where the lock had been displayed and screwed permanently onto an old wooden door. Item came from the very large estate of African art that belonged to a long time Santa Fe collector and dealer who bought many of his things in the 1960's and 1970's. When he had a gallery ... morein Santa Fe. Much of what I bought was very old and many things rare. Please watch my store as I list more metal things I bought, including sculptures, sword, knives, weapons and currency items. I will also be listing older trade beads and pygmy bark cloth drawings I was able to buy as well. gsrx_vers_486(GS 6.5.1(486)

Check out my store 10% of store profits go to aid victims of human trafficking If you have any questions ... moreplease ask Thanks for looking! Hollow Wood Cells Because of the misunderstanding regarding hollow wood cells. A brief explanation is needed. Any person dating carvings has many criteria to determine age. The breakdown of the wood cells is an important aspect of age determination. The strength of the wood is the outer edge of cells. The cell center(like bone marrow) is the passageway that feeds the wood. This center lacks strength as it is softer then the cell walls, thus it disintegrates more quickly. Laboratories determine the progress of the cell center decay to determine the wood age. This varies some by the tree variety also the location of the carving must be considered. It is difficult if not impossible to find a 300 year old carving in the tropics as humidity speeds destruction. Also wood eating insects are a big problem. Many of the Dogon areas are in the dessert above the insect line. Pieces can and are stored above the insect line for many centuries in this very dry climate. The study of providence shows it takes 250 to 300 years for a dry climate stored Dogon piece to get hollow wood cells. This is factual and not a guess. Even with Dogon. Jim's experience

Large Old and Rare Tribal us. Mali: Extremly Rare and Old Tribal used Large African Bambara mask. Hand carved from hard wood. With color pigments, carved decoration. Height: 67 cm. ed African mask from Igbo. Nigeria. Hand carved from a single piece of wood. With color pigments. Height: 64 cm. Living mainly in the forested areas of south-west Nigeria. On both sides of the Niger River the Igbo number some ten million individuals. Mainly farmers and merchants, they also hunt and fish. They are subdivided into thirty-three subgroups and are spread out among about two hundred villages scattered through the thick forest or semifertile marshland. Only on the northern and western edges of the area, under influence from Igala and Benin, are hereditary rulers found. The earliest sculpture known from Igboland is from the village of Ibo Ukwu. Where the grave of a man of distinction and a ritual store, dating from the 9th century AD, contained both chased copper objects and elaborate castings of leaded bronze. Ibo sculpture is subject to rather strict rules: the figures are generally frontal, symmetrical, and upright, with legs slightly spread, arms held away from the body, and hands stretched forward, palms open. African Bambara Wood & Metal Tribal Mask
This wood& copper mask is a one of a kind mask. Hand made by the artists of West Africa. This is a Bambara mask from Mali. The Bambara people are agrarian and regard the antelope as the ideal animal and the mythical being that taught men to farm. Therefore. Antelope horns such as these feature commonly on their masks. Also common in their masks are the dried red berries at the tips of the horns. On this masks such is represented by the red pigmentation on the tips of the three hair strands falling across the face. This particular mask falls in one of two classes of ntomo masks. The ntomo society was for uncircumcised boys and towards their training to become men in the society. There are expected to meditate on the virtues of ntomo masks. This kind of ntomo mask bears an oval face with a ridged nose and thin protruding mouth. The mouth ... moreis meant to teach the importance of silence and the virtue of restraint in speech. It is only after the discipline taught by this mask is learnt that boys are allowed to proceed to the next level where they are intimated with the secret knowledge of the tribe. I acquired this mask at an estate auction where there were many. Many authentic African masks and spears. Through my research, I found one almost identical to this one I have up for your consideration, and that is where I got the above information on the tribe and it's rituals. I can not guarantee anything, but you be the judge looking at my photos. It measures 10.5" X 4.5" Posted with

Their territory is bisected by the Niger river, and despite their largely arid homeland, they are a mostly agrarian people, producing corn, millet, and other crops, basing their local economies, for the most part, on subsistence farming. With a number of secret societies, each producing numerous and noteworthy forms of artwork, the Bambara have become well known among African art collectors, primarily for their N'tomo masks and Chi Wara headdresses. These are, however, by no ... moremeans their only prominent or noteworthy forms of art. This large and elaborate ceremonial wand features a number of embellishments. From cloth to metal rings to fine, relatively large antiquated African trade beads. This piece was likely part of a larger ceremonial wand set, and was at some point separated from its kin. This piece is reasonably large, and not something we frequently come across, so take this rare opportunity to own one of these fine examples of Bambara art! African Hand Carved Hardwood Life Size Bust of Bambara Tribesman-Eye Catching
This Bust of a Bambara Tribesman from Mali was purchased while on tour in Early 1970's. It is made of Rosewood. A reddish brown very dense hardwood which explains it's heavy weight(over 5 pounds)It is the first thing you notice when you walk into a room with it's life size presence sitting on your coffee table or bookshelf. It stands over 12" Tall and the artist MAPONDERA captures in detail this man's features. He was purchased over 40 years ago by the original owner while on tour of Mali. Located in northern central Africa. It's had a few cracks appear from time and probably the wood drying out completely and some varnish like finish has peeled away but this all adds to the patina and look of a Vintage African Native artifact.I have seen others just like it with the exact same charcteristics. This is a great find ... morefor anyones home and he will soon become a topic of conversation in his new home.
