Lindenhurst, NY, 2009, by decent from the above. Detailed provenance documentation on file and can accompany the artifact for historical conservation purposes. Inhabiting the coastal region of Nigeria. The Ogoni have a reputation for their masks used in cultural, religious and political ceremonies. To understand the dynamics of masking in the coastal region of Nigeria, one must make an important analytical shift, away from imposed categories of style and toward locally named and identified genres of masking. Masking genres are evolving. In any given village group, each genre is well defined, but because each group has a unique history; the array of mask types, mask names, and sponsoring associations often vary greatly from one location to another. The serene Ogoni mask offered here for auction was formerly of the Marta Nicholson Collection of Whitestone. New York. The artifact was collected sometime between the mid 1950s to early 1960s when Nicholson frequently traveled to Nigeria and Cameroon. The mask was later inherited by her nephew(Silva) in 2009. Despite some typical wear and minor loss to the jaw hinge(insect free since the 50’s) the mask is in fine condition. Appropriate of age, origin and medium. Overall Condition, Good, Damage/Repair, Patina worn away in small places, Additional Information: A late example of Ogoni Yam Festival Masks with a charming face painted in white. Black, and red. This is a blind mask without holes around! The Ogoni. Like many groups throughout West Africa, have traditionally celebrated the harvest of important crops, like yams, with masked dances. Masks with hinged jaws are used by both the Ogoni and their neighbors the Ibibio for harvest festivals, as the moveable lower jaw would make a happy, clacking sound when the dancers jumped up and down. It is well-known that a number of Delta peoples, including the Ogoni, have used Ibibio carvers extensively in the past. The lives of the Ogoni have been severely disrupted by the pollution caused by oil drilling in their historic homelands, and this has caused thousands of them to move inland and disperse. As a result they have abandoned many of their ritual ceremonies, and their masks have become highly collectible. For a fabulous photographic display of the masks from the Niger Delta, see the G.I. Nigeria: Rare Tribal used figure from the Ogoni.
Tribal used African figure from the Ogoni. Nigeria. Hand carved from a single piece of wood. Height: 40 cm. The Ogoni live to the east of the Niger delta. In a fertile area rich in petroleum resources. Despite the efforts of Christian missionaries, they have retained a vital, regionally varied masquerading activity that is in part deeply rooted in their own tradition and in part adopted from neighboring ethnic groups such as the Ibibio or Ijo. Ogoni mask dances serve a great variety of functions, which, depending on the region, can extend from pure entertainment to participation in funeral services and harvest festivals, all the way to the implementation of judicial verdicts. The masks of wild animals are danced, acrobatically, on the occasion of agrarian rituals.

Picasso, Modigliani, Deraini, to mention only a few, had collected African art and had been profoundly influenced by it. Shortly afterwards I bought the Baule Fetish and the Baule bobbin which are still two of the finest pieces in my collection. Carved figures among the Ogoni are primarily seen attached to the top of masquerade headdresses(Ka-elu) for the men's Ekpo secret society and less often as free-standing figures. Though their specific use among the Ogoni is difficult to define they probably served as altar figures representing ancestors or title-holders. Ogoni figures are often sculpted as puppets with movable arms and legs and with brightly painted designs on their bodies. The fact that this figure is nearly natural in its black patina attests to its use as an ancestor figure and not a doll. 77759* All content. OLD AFRICAN NIGERIAN "OGONI" TRIBAL MASK W/ HINGED or TALKING JAW
For sale is an old African Ogoni Nigerian tribal wood mask with a hinged. Talking, or articulated jaw. It is 9" long X5" W. I believe it is from the early 1900s. The mask is designed in such a way as to give the impression of having teeth when the mouth is open. The condition is good for its age as it has some scuff marks and a small chip in the back of the bottom of the mask. This mask would be a very nice addition to any tribal art collection. And a carved bird on Top. The mask shows much handling and some age. The Ogoni. Like many groups throughout West Africa, have traditionally celebrated the harvest of important crops, like yams, with masked dances. Masks with hinged jaws are used by both the Ogoni and their neighbors the Ibibio for harvest festivals, as the moveable lower jaw would make a ... morehappy, clacking sound when the dancers jumped up and down. Identification and attribution of masks from the Niger Delta region can be difficult, since they were often carved by members of adjacent cultures for sale/trade to their neighbors. The society also has some rather strict law enforcement duties that reportedly can be somewhat violent. Among the Ogoni such masks represent a male character. The exaggeration of features such as eyes, nose, and mouth reflects the strenght and agressivity related to a male character. The orange color, the pointed nose, and the exaggerate ears could be details that identify this mask as a representation of a European. Masks like this are danced to portray positive ethical concepts. Masks also symbolize age grades as men advance through the various levels of the Ekpo. Recommended Reading: Anderson.
