I have also seen it listed as Arussi- Gallo ... moreas well as Oromo. These were used from the late 19th to early 20th century. Not being an expert on African shields, this is up to you collectors to determine. After a good deal of research I believe that it is basically identical to several other shields created by these tribal people. Any comments or insights would be greatly appreciated! Here is a description I ran across on the Arusi-Gallo- Oromo people. The Galla. Also called the Oromo, are the largest, most widely dispersed people group in Ethiopia, and are composed of approximately a dozen tribal clusters. Migrating from the Horn of Africa, the Galla, or Oromo, arrived in Ethiopia four centuries ago. In the 1700-1800s they became a prominent force in Abyssinian(Ethiopian) politics. This shield is made of very thick. Heavy leather and is roughly 25 X 28 inches which I see is larger than most shields of this type. These shields were made of Hippo and or Rhino hide and are extremely well constructed. The face of the shield is in fantastic condition compared to those Ive seen.The whole shield is in essentially pristine shape. Its not all warped or slumped and doesnt have the often seen chunks missing on the edges. The leather is in completely sound condition and you can see that it has always been properly stored. It has beautifully created molded raised areas as well as a nice degree of decorative tooling or embossing.This shield is unusual in that in addition to the the heavy duty handle, which is in superb condition,it also has its complete, and still intact sinew structure that appears to be an" arm stabalizing sling" but I dont know for sure. Again, any info from you experts would be thrilling to get! 18 1/2" diameter. 6" deep. I picked this up out of the same estate as my Abercrombie and Frintz bocce ball set and the estate was loaded with old stuff. Outside display side of the shield is in very nice condition and has designs in the thick leather/hide. The back side has wear and looks rather bug eaten to the secondary thinner layer of leather covering and that also has designs in it that are different than the front. The handle is attached firmly and is sound and solid as is the shield itself. This would still ward off a nice blow. It looks like at one time this also had a leather strap attached that was anchored to the shield at 2 points on one side and 2 points the other. The remains of the old leather nots are still in the holes on the one side. Makes sense that it would have a strap when the shield wasn't being used ... moreto carry over the shoulder or back and leave the hands free. African Hide & Wood Shield. Colorful and Very Interesting Piece! Unique!
I know very little to nothing about this piece other than it caught my eye in an antique store and was labeled"Africa n Breast Plate Shield. It seems small to me. But perhaps it would provide some shielding for the owner! The frame is wood and there is a handle formed on the back side. It's 17 1/2" long. 12 1/2" wide, oval. It appears that it has some age, a primitive quality, actual hid es with fur and tied securely with hide thongs. The decoration appears painted with o ff-white and rust-colored paint. The frame is wood. The hide is somewhat trans lucent. As shown in one photo, so that the painted design on the other side can be seen through the hide slightly. The overall condition is very good. I'd say, although there is some small area of edge wear and a little"shedding" of hair f rom the hides. It displays ... morevery nicely. This vintage African war/hunting shield is at least 50 years old. And was made and purchased in Africa. It measures c. 16" x 20" and is made of animal skin decorated with red and beige paint. The hide is a blackish brown-colored heavy weight hide featuring concentric rings around the protruding wooden cone or nipple; embellished with interlocking triangular designs in four evenly spaced rings. The Ethiopians are not tribal but break down into social groups, with the Amhara being the leaders and the Galla representing the populace. There are disagreements among scholars about which groups actually created these shields, but there can be no denying the beauty of the form, design and condition of this outstanding example. The piece measures 21 inches across by 7 inches deep(53.34 cm by 17.18 cm) It was likely used in the war between Italy and Ethiopia. Which occurred from 1895-1896. It comes from a collection of weaponry containing many relics from this conflict. It would make a fabulous addition to any weaponry collection and also displays well as a"modern" art form on the wall. African Vintage Kenyan Masai Shield and Spears Antique Primitive Weapons Decor
Vintage Kenyan Genuine Masai Warrior Shield and two Spears. The shield was purchased in Kenya in 1972 from an antique shop in Nairobi. The spears were were purchased from Masai cattle herders near Narok. Kenya the same year. These were their personal spears and it took some serious bartering to convince them to part with them. The shield is made of Cape Buffalo hide and is very thick. This shield and spears as displayed represent the symbol for Kenya and is displayed on the Kenya flag. The shield makes a very nice accent to one's trophy room as shown in the photos. In fact, one of the Bush Bucks is a Masai subspecies and also included are Harnessed, South African and Chobe. The shield is in virtually the same condition as when purchased and was very old at the time of purchase. It is a very solid item. Measures 42 inches in length by ... more22 wide. Again. The spears are authentic and typical in the sense that they consist of the blade section, spear section and the wood section connecting. The center of the wood sections have been drilled with single small holes to allow them to be mounted onto a wall. Please note also the back of the shield showing the handle. Not your typical Masai shield and spears. The new E-bay calculator shows a Fed Ex shipping cost for this item at $58 which seems high.
