A Fine Ngaady Amwaash/ Kete. Kuba, Congo- FINE PROVENANCE Wood. Fine patina, white kaolin, remains of pigments, cowrie shells. Hammered coper, beads, ... morefur, large bell-shaped mask, hallowed eyes with one small see slit, geometric patterns. Kuba peoples call themselves“children of Woot” in honor of their founder. Kuba art is characterized by its use of geometric patterns and cowrie shells. Three types of mask have been associated with dances that take place within the royal compound. The first. Called Mwaashamboy represents Woot. Founder of the Bushoong tribe. The second, known as Ngaady Amwaash. Personifies Woot‘s incestuous sister-wife. The third mask, the Bwoom. Represents a pygmy and is associated with Woot‘s evil brother. This mask. Ngaady Amwaash portrays Mweel. Woot's beautiful sister and wife(alternatively, mother) and who represents women in general. The mask is striking with its strong pattern of white and black triangles painted on the face, which are said to represent hearthstones and domesticity. Lines painted down the cheeks represent tears and recall the pain of death, for royal masks often appear in funerary contexts. The tears also denote the hardship of a woman's life as a"pawn" of male authority befitting the mask's name(Ngaady aMwaash) which means"pawn woman of Mwaash, her husband/brother king. The Ngaady Amwaash and Moshambwooy masks dance together on ceremonial occasions with great dignity and pride“ University of Virginia. African Masks Signs of use. H: 48 cm(19 inch) Provenance: L. Title, Kuba Royal Helmet Mask M'Boom DR Congo Africa, Type of Object, Mask, Country of Origin, DR Congo, People, Kuba-Bushoong, Materials, Wood. Hide, ... morecooper alloy, beads, cowrie shells, Approximate Age, second half 20th century, Dimensions, Height is 13 inches. Wide is 8 inches. Depth is 13 inches. Overall Condition, Good Damage/Repair, wear. Chips in places, rusting metal, dents, Additional Information: A superb example of one of the three accepted Kuba"royal" masks. Featuring exquisite geometric decoration. Intricate woven fringes with cowries and beads. The offered mask is a beautiful example with elaborate beadwork. This is a royal mask known as Bwoom recognized by the bulging forehead the exaggerate nose, the mask would have been difficult to categorize. This is probably due to the diverse stylistic elements found throughout Kuba territory, as the mask has features more commonly found among the Kuba sub-groups. Bwoom" represents the evil brother in ceremonial reenactments of Kuba mythology, as well as the inevitable struggle for power among individuals. In these dances, Bwoom seeks both the mythical throne of his brother, Mwaash A Mboy, as well as the king's wife, Ngaady A Mwaash. Bwoom, a pygmy, symbolically speaks for the common man, with all the temptation and folly that entails. This colorful trio of characters comprises the recognized pantheon of the royal helmet masks, which are eagerly sought-after by collectors and museums. This mask has a bulbous forehead and an underslung jaw. Copper ornaments the forehead. Raffia headdress and beard are embroidered with cowries. And beads are found on nose, forehead, lips, and back of headdress. The raffia is hand-woven. This mask has a lot of presence and would stand out in any collection. Bena Biombo- Democratic Republic of the Congo Early-Mid 20th Century. Original Wood. Pigment, vegetal fibers Height 36.1cm( 14.25in) without raffia beard ... moreLewis and Sonja Pate Collection. Whispering Pines, NC. Field collected in Zaire, early 20th cenury. Dr. Carlton W. Helen Moore Collection. Waldorf, MD. Fayetteville Museum of Art. Fayetteville, NC, 2001. Deaccessioned and sold to fund construction of the new museum in Festival Park. Detailed provenance documentation on file and can accompany the artifact for historical conservation purposes. The Biombo have been strongly influenced politically and culturally by their Kuba neighbors to the north. Describing an near identical mask form. The Bowers Museum Collections Department notes“within the Kasai province in central Democratic Republic of Congo are a number of very small, sometimes ancient tribes who have retained their individuality. Among them are the Bena Biombo who are best known for their masks of diverse type. This mask with half-closed eyes and arched eyebrows radiates a peaceful, benevolent air. The incised geometric designs across the cheeks and chin indicate tribal scarifications. Although Bena Biombo masks resemble those neighboring tribes, the three appendages on top of the head identify this mask as originating with the Bena Biombo. Feathers are attached to the top of the mask when it is worn. A woven support of reed encases the back of the mask to provide a secure fit for the wearer's head and ruffled grass extends from the back of the meshed reed around to the front of the mask. Although masks of this type may have served other religious and ceremonial purposes at an earlier date, today they are used primarily for entertainment and masquerades(Bena Biombo Mask, 2007) The extraordinary Biombo helmet mask we have up for auction was formerly in the Lewis Pate. Dr. Carlton and Helen Moore Collection. The Pate& Moore Collection was generously donated to Fayetteville Museum of Art in 2001. Founded in 1972, the Fayetteville Museum of Art move

This is a beautiful antique Kuba royal mask. The Kuba is a large tribe from the Kasai region in Southern DRC; it is. In fact, composed of a cluster of ... moretribes(Bushoong, Ngeende, Shoowa, etc. which each represent a different historic subgroup and each had a representative at the court of the Kuba king. The Kuba Kingdom produces a vast array of objects- both for court and rituals. Three main types of mask are known– although great variations exist among subgroups. The piece here is known as Ishyeen Imaalu– a mask from Northern Kuba territory used in initiation rites. As well as for funerals. It shows the striking features of Kuba masks, including a pointy forehead, a large, stylized nose, and protruding eyes. The cut here is very sharp making for a powerful looking mask. It is covered with black, red and white pigments in geometrical motives, typical of the Kuba. The inside of the mask also shows a nice patina from use and it has its complete hairdo, made of fabric, beads and feathers. Dimensions are 15x7x11.

Masks made ... moreby the Leele differ somewhat from the Kuba masks. Kuba masks are heavily decorated with bead and have bold traits. On this mask, the hairline, the form of the eyes. Kuba masks represent nature spirits and are worn at the initiation of princes. At funerals of chiefs and elders, and during annual festivals which commemorate the founding of the nation. The Biombo have been strongly influenced politically and culturally by their Kuba neighbors to the north. Describing an near identical mask form. The Bowers Museum Collections Department notes“within the Kasai province in central Democratic Republic of Congo are a number of very small, sometimes ancient ... moretribes who have retained their individuality. Large Mwaash aMbooy mask (helmet) from the Kuba tribe of Zaire/Congo/Africa
Up for auction is a large intricately decorated Mwaash aMbooy mask(helmet mask) from the Kuba tribe of southeastern Congo(formerly Zaire) Below is an except from the Brooklyn Museum about Mwaash aMbooy: Among the Kuba. Masks are thought to be reflections of nature-spirits( mingesh) that act as intermediaries between the Supreme Being(Nyeem) and the world of mortals. There are more than twenty different types of masks that function within the men's initiation society. Moshambwooy is one of the three most important and represents Woot. The founding hero from whom the Kuba believe themselves to be descended. Moshambwooy masks are worn by the nyimi. Or king, of the Kuba or by chiefs in villages. The nyimi's mask is usually made of leopard skin. While those of chiefs are made of antelope skin. The face of this mask is probably antelope ... moreskin painted with a design to look like leopard's fur. The nose and ears are carved of wood, and the white beard of fur from the chest of a sheep represents the beard of an old man. The mask is in extremely good condition given its age(probably from the 70s) with only two small areas of beadwork missing(please see photos) on the back(which one cannot really see because of the fiber cuff around the mask) The mask measures 22.5in tall. 16in wide, and 15in deep. It comes from a pet-free, smoke-free home. US bidders preferred. International bidders must message me first as I do not ship to all countries and will have to get you a quote for shipping(the above estimate is for domestic shipping) Please wait for invoice before paying because the above shipping is an estimate. Kuba Ngeende Mask Smiling Congo African SALE Was $450
Title, Kuba Mask. Smiling, Feathers, UNUSUAL Isheen Maal African Type of Object, Mask, Country of Origin, DR Congo, People, Kuba-Ngeende, Materials, Wood. Feathers, raffia, Approximate Age, Mid to second half  20th Century, Dimensions, 16 inches High x 12 inches Wide. Overall Condition, Fair to good, Damage/Repair, Minor crack in base rim and mouth. Large crack on top of head.Large chip to bottom. Additional Information: This is an interesting mask for it shows unusual features I have ever found on Kuba masks. The hairstyle. And lthe large smiling mouth as well as the general structure of the mask(facial mask with headress) are atypical of the Kuba style. The only elements that related this mask to the Kuba are the goggle eyes with holes around as seen on Isheen Maal masks. This is an innovative product from dating probably from ... morethe second half of the 20th century. Traditional Kuba masks belong to the royal art. And most masks are somehow related to the three main characters of Kuba mythology: 1) Woot(the"first ancestor, akin to Adam) 2) Woot's brother, and rival for the love of 3) Woot's sister-who ended up with Woot. This one was probably made by the Ngeende. The Ngeende group claims to be descended from Ishweemy. One of the nine sons of Woot, the primordial founder of the Kuba Kingdom. Accordingly, the Ngeende are of special importance to the Kuba Kingdom and designated as the holders of the Kuba official charms, Muyum. They share not only a common history but also the same culture and traditions as the Kuba. Even today, they still send representatives to the Kuba-Bushoong court. The Ngeende live in small villages led by chiefs who rule with the council of elders. Understandably, their art has many congruities with the art of the Kuba-Bushoong, the Ngoongo, the Kete, and all of them produce masks. The Ngeende masks tell the story of Woot and other important characters in the foundation of Kuba kingdom. These include Bongo(Mbwoom) Mukenge which is a variant of Moshambooy, Shala-Mushampoji

It is crowned with a bent-forward representation of an elephant trunk with two tusks. ... moreThe mukyeem mask does not appear in the immediate vicinity of the king, but rather is seen among the Kete, Ngongo, Ngeende, and also with some other constituent peoples of the Kuba kingdom. It performs at funerary rituals of notables and evokes death. A Bwoon Helmet-Mask/ Bushoong. Kuba Congo- FINE PROVENANCE Wood. Fine patina, white kaolin, remains of pigments, cowries shells, cloth, powerfully carved with large bulbous forehead. The Kuba kingdom was founded in the 16th century by the Bushoong people. Bushoong art is characterized by its use of geometric patterns and cowrie shells. Three types of royal mask have been associated with dances that take place within the royal compound. The first. Called Mwaashamboy represents Woot. Founder of the Bushoong tribe. The second, known as Nady Amwaash. Personifies Woot‘s incestuous sister and represents women in general. The third mask, the Bwoon. Is associated with Woot‘s“evil brother” Bwoon personifies a commoner. A pygmy, or one who opposes the king's authority. Bwoom appears on the nkan"initiation fence" of the Bushong(Vansina ... more1955:150-151) and in other initiation contexts. A royal mask. Bwoom is sometimes worn by the king. Yet unlike Mwaashamboy. Bwoom does not appear at funerals. Despite regional variations, the Bwoom mask conforms to a distinct type. But Kuba facial masks like this are rarely seen. This could be a work from ... morethe Leele. Where were found masks with face encrusted and embellished with finial metal wires and striations, and scarifications on the cheeks and eye areas. The Leele live in the confluence of the Sankuru and Kasai Rivers in territory which adjoins the land of the Kuba. They have a number of similarities with the Kuba. Sharing the same language and history. Their sculpture and utilitarian objects such as cups, containers, pipes and musical instruments, show clear Kuba influence. One of the most popular creations of the Leele artists is the Itumbwa or rubbing oracle. Made in the form of a human or animal. It was used as a divination device. In general masks made by the Leele differ somewhat from the Kuba masks. Made of wood, the Leele mask is adorned with red pigment, and the eyes and nose region is covered over with metal plates forming multiple lines of eyebrows. Antique Quality Carved African Tribal Kuba Bwoom Mask Helmet Fur Beard&Leather
For sale here is an old authentic Kuba tribal wood carved helmet from the Republic of. It is made mainly of wood with the addition of tin forehead and leather back. The mask is decorated with different size and color beads and shells and has a long skin with fur beard. Will probably date to the early 20th century. Helmet masks of this kind are known among the Bushoong as Bwoom. This is one of the three so-called royal masks of the Kuba. The others being the Mwaash a Mbouy and the Ngaady a Mwaash. In reality it seems that the concept of a triad of"royal masks" has been grossly oversimplified. In truth. The Kuba/Bushoong produce a diversity of masks. And many can perform by themselves or in conjunction with lesser known initiatory or village masks. The Bwoom mask is quite possibly the autochthonous mask of the region. With variants ... morein nearly all of the Kuba sub-groups. Though Bushoong folk tales exist to explain its appearance as a pygmy or a hydrocephalic. The mask may have more in common with other large masculine helmet masks dispersed over the wider general area. Unlike other Kuba masks such as the Mwaash a Mbouy. Which is usually buried with its owner, the Bwoom may be passed down from one person to another. Thus it is not unusual to find old–in some cases ancient–Bwoom masks still being used by young dancers. This fine old mask has been rebeaded on numerous occasions and displays the more archaic"blindfold" style beading across the eyes. Which in more modern examples becomes thin and stylized. Source: Size- about 11 inches tall with out the beard. Add 16+ inches beard. 9 inches wide by about 11 inches deep. Condition- Please scroll up to look at the full report and the visuals. Beautiful Antique Kete Kuba Face Mask - Congo Zaire / DRC
This is a beautiful antique Kete Kuba mask from the Western Kasai region. It shows a flat face with a large square forehead. Which shows influence from the neighboring Lele. The eyebrows, pierced eyes and triangular mouth are protruding. The bottom part of the face is covered with carved geometrical and scarification motives. The combination of a flat face with dramatic highly abstract features, as well a finesse of the carving make for a powerful mask. It also shows a nice, earthy patina on the forehead. Dimensions are 10x5.

BEAUTIFUL OLD KUBA PEOPLE PAINTED WOOD MASK FROM CONGO - 2
You are bidding on a Beautiful KUBA PEOPLE Painted Carved wood mask. With amazing design details, from Congo. Aside from the beautiful cloth mentioned above. The Kuba also produce carved wooden masks and figures. They also carve headrests, divination oracles, and anthropomorphic cups. In the 16th century. The Kuba peoples migrated from the distant north to their current location along the Sankuru River. When they arrived, however, they found that the Twa already lived there. The Twa were eventually absorbed into the Kuba Kingdom, but retained some independent cultural characteristics. The height of the Kingdom was during the mid-19th century. Europeans first reached the area in 1884, but the Kuba, being relatively isolated, were not as affected by the slave trade as many of the other peoples in the area. The Nsapo invaded during the late ... more19th century, and the Kingdom was broken up to a large extent. The Kuba oral history tells of the creation of the world by Bumba. Who decreed that the Bushoong would always be the ruling class. This creator god is not formally worshiped. At one time the Kuba had a religion based on ancestor worship, but this seems to have died out, although divination is still practiced in order to discover causes of evil. Success during hunting is recognized as a gift from the gods. It is not incidental that diviners often employ carved wooden hunting dogs as rubbing oracles in order to arrive at their knowledge. Dogs are seen throughout the region as responsible for delivering the will of the god, whether it be through hunting or through the diviner. Beautiful Antique Kuba Bwoom Royal Mask - DRC / Congo Zaire
This is a beautiful antique Kuba royal mask. The Kuba is a large tribe from the Kasai region in Southern DRC; it is. In fact, composed of a cluster of tribes(Bushoong, Ngeende, Shoowa, etc. which each represent a different historic subgroup and each had a representative at the court of the Kuba king. The Kuba Kingdom produced a vast array of objects- both for court and rituals. Three main types of mask are known– although great variations exist among subgroups. The piece here is known as Bwoom– a mask traditionally associated with opposition to the king's authority(and defiant in its performance) Used in initiation rites and sometimes worn by the King himself. Despite regional variations. Bwoom masks show a series of characteristics. Including the large round forehead, broad nose and naturalistic ears– together with heavy ornamental additions. ... moreIncluding beads, copper and cowry shells. This piece here actually shows extraordinary features: the forehead is circled by a series of scarification patterns and the hairdo made of the carved triangular motives typical of the Kuba. The cheeks and bottom part of the face are covered in encrusted copper sheet/nails; and both the forehead and back display small protuberances also covered in a copper wire. This is a spectacular. BACKGROUND The Kuba live in the area of central DRC bordered by the Sankuru. Kasai, and Lulua rivers. This is a region of valleys where numerous rivers flow south to north; the hills are covered with brush and the rivers are bordered by forests. Farming, aside from clearing the fields, was women’s work; they cultivate manioc, corn, gourds, bananas, pineapples, and palms. Tobacco was grown by the men. The hunt, a collective enterprise using nets, brought prestige and reinforced the social cohesion between the villagers. To fish the rivers required the participation of the entire village in order to build canoes. Although today most Kuba ethnic groups are organized into independent chiefdoms, they still recognize the authority of the Bushong king. The art of the Kuba is one of the most highly developed of all African traditions, and significant cultural accomplishments are part of their heritage. Among the best known of Kuba art forms are royal portrait figures, ndop, idealized representations. An nd

Kuba Bwoom African Tribal Ritual Mask, Democratic Republic of Congo
Here is an original Kuba tribal mask that was handcrafted in the Lulua Province. Democratic Republic of the Congo. It is made of wood, cowrie shells, beads, fur, leather, and cloth. It measures 12" high, 8" across,10" deep, and spans 18" from the bottom of the beard to the top of the forehead. The mask was made for performances of a ritual masquerade. From information available online from the Brooklyn Museum, I learned that Kuba mythology revolves around three figures, each represented by a masquerade character: Woot, the creator and founder of the ruling dynasty; Woot’s spouse; and Bwoom. Bwoom’s specific identity varies according to different versions of the myth. He may represent the king’s younger brother, a person of Twa descent, or a commoner. Embodying a subversive force within the royal court, the Bwoom masquerade ... moreis often performed in conflict with the masked figure representing Woot. The mask is in fine condition. There is wear to the dark finish, particularly on the ear to the viewer's left. There are a few small chips. The section of cloth beard in the proximate position of the right molars is loose- a few dabs of white glue would fix this. The mask's net weight is 3-1/2 pounds and packaged weight will be 6 pounds. Shipping via USPS Standard Post will be $14.00. Any questions, just ask. Thanks! ShipSaver.

African Tribal Mask-Kuba Tribe-Belgian Congo-Zaire-Toothy & Scary Looking
This hand carved mask came from Zaire. Or as it was known at the time, the Belgian Congo. It was inherited from our father who was a pilot for a major oil company. At one time he was working in Africa in the 1950’s and early‘60’s, among other parts of the world. The mask may represent some of the agonies that unfortunate country has suffered. The mask is hand carved from hardwood. It has carved and then painted teeth, scarification on the nose and ears, and possibly a head dress of some kind. The eyes are outlined in white, the left eye showing some small dots in the corner possibly signifying tears. The mask is 14” tall. And about 7 3/4” at the widest. Vintage Congo Mask Scarification Rites Mid-Century Kuba Central African Tribe ??
Estate Fresh Vintage African Mask Measures 15" Tall x 9" wide x 3.5" 4.5" to nose. Inside mask depth, 3 in. Definitely a vintage mask, but likely made for the tourist trade, as it shows no evidence of having been used for ceremonial purposes. A very interesting example all the same, however, as a major motif here is there dieing traditional practice of scarification, practiced by many African cultures, though it is becoming less frequent with Westernization and Globalization. When used, scarification demarks different life stages and even has an erotic function. The Congo Basin and surrounding areas are known for the most complex scarifications. Having searched through multitudes of examples of African masks, though I haven't found this particular example, it seems that this most closely resembles the masks of the ... moreKuba, who reside in what is now the Democratic Republic of the Congo. I am not an expert on African masks by any means, but it is a very well-done and striking example. I would welcome any information that may add to attributing a tribe, style, or region. When he had a gallery in Santa Fe. He was paricularly interested in Kuba material and had a large collection of Kuba textiles which I was able to purchase and will be listing. Much of the collection I bought, which included masks, sculptures, metal work, and more, were very old and some rare. TRIBAL AFRICAN KUBA Of Congo-Kinshasa ROYAL MASK
For your consideration: I purchased this mask at an estate sale in Chicago about 10 years ago. The sale was of a world traveler and there were many fascinating things available for those willing to go out in a snowstorm. Several years ago I moved and decided to list this mask on EBay. I received an email from a member of EBay in Washington DC who said that it was a mask from the Kuba ethnic group in Congo-Kinshasa. The mask was used in dances at the court of the Kuba King. While I have no assurances of it's authenticity. I will give you a detailed and in depth description and will gladly answer any questions you may have regarding this beautiful ethnic piece. The mask is carved from a single piece of wood. On the back of the mask. The holes do not seem conformed in shape, as if a drill were used, they would likely be the same shape, some ... moreholes are larger some smaller. The holes for the eyes are not identical. On the front of the mask. Running down the center of the nose to the chin, the beads are sewn on a strip of cloth. Three colors are used, in the intricate patterning- black, brown, and a lighter brown. The top of the mask looks to be handwoven with seashells in a diamond pattern. There is a diagonal hole near the seam in the top. There are 5 dangling strings of beads and shells that are complete. One is broken and it looks like two dangling ones are missing. The red cloth the intricate pattern of shells that covers the head is cotton. All seams on this mask are hand sewn in large stitches. The brown lines between the shells appear to be small seeds. The brown cloth at the shoulders beneath the shells. Is very rough texture, and may be handwoven as well, but a much smaller thread. The ears on the mask are made of a light wood. I don't believe this to be antique. But by the fabric it is definitely good and vintage. The wood is 10" the teardrop shaped crown is 7" The length in the back 10" I leave it to your expertise it's value- but one thing is for sure- it is a beautiful piece of c

The holes do not seem conformed in shape, as if a drill were used, they would likely be the same shape, some holes are larger some smaller. The wood is 10" the teardrop shaped crown is 7" The len

Multiple holes in the surrounding areas of the eyes evoke the chameleon which can see everywhere. The face has a large triangular nose. On this mask, the surface is dark brown and shows much handling. Pwoo Itok and Isheen Maal(also called Pwoom Itok and ishyeenmaal or Shene Malula) This type of mask is found among the Kuba-Bushoong. The Shoowa, and the Ngeende peoples. According to some sources, I sheen Maal was inspired by Pwoo Itok. In any case. The difference between the two is hard to detect and in the literature they are seen as the same mask, with different names depending on where the mask was found. Most likely the Shoowa use the Pwoo Itok while the Kuba prefer the term Isheen Maal. Such masks were used as a dancing mask during the initiation of young men and among the Bushoong it was worn by members of the Batende. A secret regulatory society which had among its duties the apprehension of criminals. The Ngeende group claims to be descended from Ishweemy. Impressive Kuba Wall Mask, Democratic Republic of Congo
The art of the Kuba is one of the most highly developed of all African traditions. And significant cultural accomplishments are part of their heritage. Among the best known of Kuba art forms are royal portrait figures, ndop. Idealized representations. An ndop may have played a role in the installation of the king. And during his life it is said to have been not only a portrait but also the soul double of the king. Whatever happened to him was believed to happen to it as well. Closely associated with the king’s fertility, the ndop was kept in the woman’s quarters. And was placed next to his wives during childbirth to ensure safe delivery. The kings typically sit facing forward with legs crossed, the left in front of the right; the right hand, with fingers extended, rests on the right knee, and the left hand holds the royal dagger. Geometric ... morepatterns cover the stomach and are continued on the back of the figure. The royal statues show the king wearing a rectangular shody hat. They are mounted on quadrangular pedestals. The sculptures include objects significant to each particular king, identifying his own personal accomplishments. Developing from the court style was a popular style, which utilized geometric forms instead of the well-modeled, full-volume forms of the court figures. Kuba fetishes, emphasizing only essential organs, are highly schematic. The popular style can also be found in the utensils and textiles produced by the Kuba. Over twenty types of masks are used among the Kuba. With meanings and functions that vary from group to group. Kuba wooden helmet masks are probably the most commonly produced items. Popular with the collectors. These striking masks are wonderfully decorated with geometrical surface designs in dazzling contrasts of color, pattern, and texture. Hide, animal hair, fur, beads, cowrie shells, and feathers ornament the masks, and costumes of bark-cloth, raffia fiber fabric, and beaded elements complete the manifestation of nature spirits, intermediaries between the Supreme Being and th

Kuba Bwoom Helmet Mask Dr. Mason Collection DR Congo African
Title, Kuba Bwoom Helmet Mask Dr. Mason Collection DR Congo African Type of Object, Mask, Country of Origin, DR Congo, People, Kuba-Bushoong, Materials, Wood. Hide, metal(cooper) beads, cowrie shells, Approximate Age, mid 20th century, Dimensions, Height is 16 inches. Width is 10 inches. Depth is 9 inches. Overall Condition, FAir Damage. Repair: Some damage to beadwork on back and leather on top. Fur is falling out. Additional Information: A unique and stunning example of one of the three accepted Kuba"royal" masks. Featuring exquisite geometric decoration. Intricate woven fringes with cowries, and an expressive, even sardonic smile, this is an outstanding and beautiful example, lacking the sometimes overly-adorned beaded face. In fact, without the bulging forehead which identifies"Bwoom, the mask would have been difficult ... moreto categorize. See SCULPTURE AFRICAINE, by Fagg.
