The Romance of King Arthur and His Knights of the Round Table by Sir Thomas Malory. Illustrated by Arthur Rackham. DESCRIPTION: Hardback with Dust Jacket: ... more501 pages. Publisher: Weathervane Books; 1977) ISBN: 0517231360. This vigorous. Eloquent epic tale of valor is noted for having been written in the best English prose of the Fifteenth Century. The accompanying illustrations are, of course, a perfect example of the best illustrations of any century. The characters will be familiar: Lancelot and Guinevere, Tristan and Isolde, for this is the definitive account of the Arthurian legends, and Pollard's is the definitive abridgement. His preface says: The story of King Arthur and his knights is one of the greatest that men have ever made. Greater by far than that of Charlemagne, which had come into fashion a little earlier, greater perhaps even than the tale of Troy, already some 2,000 years old, which for some centuries it eclipsed. It is through the fifteenth century prose of Sir Thomas Mallory, in which homeliness and nobility go hand in hand, that it holds its place in our hearts. But the story itself was the outcome of the second half of the twelfth century and the beginning of the thirteenth, the days of England’s Henry II and his three turbulent sons Geoffrey, Richard Coeur de Lion, and John. In the days when the Arthurian romances were coming into existence. Violence, cruelty, and luxury were rampant. But the greatness of these evils called forth some great virtues to counter them. This story bears traces of these and is penetrated to its very core by the special virtues of days in which men were content to live dangerously, carrying their lives in their in their hands and willing to lay them down lightly rather than break the rules of the game or be faithless to work or friend. CONDITION: This is the special. Illustrated edition with 32 illustrations(illustrated by Arthur Rackham, 16 color, 16 black + white) Book has clearly never been read, the inside of the book is pristine. Pages are clean, crisp, un

ANTIQUE ARTS & ANTIQUES OF THE MARQUESAS ISLANDS - PACIFIC ISLANDERS
Adorning the World. Art of the Marquesas Islands” Published in New York by the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 2006. description continues below the picture- DISCUSSION: Known for the elegance and complexity of their decorative art. Marquesan artists were described by Paul Gauguin as possessing"an unheard of sense of decoration" in all they created. The extraordinary ways in which Marquesans adorned their world are reflected in virtually every type of object they made and used, from sacred figures of gods and ancestors to items that were purely functional. Their work was fashioned from a diversity of materials in forms ranging from delicate ivory ornaments and luxuriant featherwork to imposing figural sculpture in wood and stone. The human body was also an important focus for artistic expression. Adorned with finely crafted ornaments, ... moreelaborate coiffures, and intricate tattoos that sometimes covered the entire body, Marquesans themselves became living art forms. In this book, the authors place the artistic traditions of the Marquesans within their cultural and historical context, giving insights into their distinctive visual imagery and their enduring influence on Western art and literature. Maluku - Sharing Cultural Memory - Great publication on Moluccan art and culture
Rarely offered volume and exhibition catalog: Sri Kuhnt-Saptodewo. Ursula Brandl-Straka, Reinhard Maurer. Thontji Tuarissa(eds. Maluku- Sharing Cultural Memory, Published by the Museum für Völkerkunde(Museum of Ethnography) Vienna, 2012. 172 p. profusely illustrated, condition like new. This publication features old collections in the Museum of Ethnography in Vienna and of the Siwalima Museum in Ambon(Moluccas) The Spice Islands- for centuries. This was the name under which the western hemisphere perceived the Indonesian archipelago of the Moluccas(Maluku) an island world with many cultures that remained largely undocumented where it lay outside colonial commercial interests, and which sank into obscurity as interest in nutmeg and cloves wanted. In this volume. Indonesian, Austrian and Dutch scientists have set themselves the goal ... moreof studying the points of contact in the history of the collections of two museums, Siwalima Museum in Ambon and the Museum of Ethnology, Vienna. This intercultural cooperation focuses on the common heritage of ethnographic objects, many of which have vanished from everyday life in their source cultures, and makes this heritage more accessible. This book thus documents the earliest Moluccas collections of the Museum of Ethnology, Vienna, including that of a prominent world traveler: Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria-Este, who dropped anchor in Ambon(Central Moluccas) in 1893, where the Dutch resident, Baron van Hoëvell presented him with a collection of more than 1000 objects. Founded in 1973 in Ambon. The largest city on the Moluccas, Siwalima Museum also has a high-quality collection of ethnographic objects from the Moluccas and manages to create a connection with the present, especially with the more recent objects. Like the objects preserved in Ambon and Vienna, the existing knowledge about these objects in the source regions is an untapped treasure that could strengthen the cultural identity in Maluku. The transfer of cultural knowledge significantly increases the

Robert Farris Thompson: Face of the Gods - rare publication and exhibit. catalog
Robert Farris Thompson: Face of the Gods: Art and Altars of the African Americas Prestel Publ. Munich, New York 1993, 334 pages, numerous illustrations. This book was published in connection with an exhibition at the Museum for African Art in New York. Face of the Gods: Art and Altars of Africa and the African Americas is an introduction to a brand-new field in art history: the comparative study of Afro-Atlantic altars. Tracing icons and philosophies in altar-making from major African civilizations to the Americas. The book restores many works of art, long considered in isolation from each other, to their original constellating power. Face of the Gods is based on the twenty-five years of fieldwork by Robert Farris Thompson, Professor of the History of African and African-American Art at Yale University in both Africa and the Americas—in Mali, ... moreGhana, Benin, Nigeria, Zaire, the Central African Republic, Angola, Zimbabwe, and South Africa, on the eastern side of the Atlantic, and in Cuba, Haiti, Puerto Rico, Suriname, the United States, Brazil, and Argentina, on the western. The book shows how Africans and their descendants in the three continents worship not only before points of reverence, foci of sacrifice and prayer, but also, in certain areas, through sacred happening climaxed by possession. In the Afro-Atlantic world the concept“altar” is double: fixed(tree, fire, stone, dais) and moving(ring shouts, dancing, handclapping, circling, ecstasy) leading ultimately to visitation by healing spirits under God. Shipment with registered insured mail only.

Mythologies of The Primitive Planters- The Middle and Southern Americas At the time Campbell died. He had completed the first 1 and 1/3 volumes of a massive 4-volume work. That this series will remain forever unfinished is one of the greatest tragedies of modern literature. The intent was to trace the development of myth throughout history and throughout the world. The first volume(The Way of the Animal Powers) covers the most ancient themes of the Paleolithic Great Hunt and its survival into modern(mostly native) cultures which still live by their agreement with the animals they hunt. Volume 2(The Way of the Seeded Earth) was to deal with planting cultures and the myths of agriculture an the plant world. Of the three main centers of agricultural development(the New World, the Far East, and the Middle and Near East) Campbell completed work only on the first and most recent. Volume 3 was to cover the myth systems based on astronomical and astrological insight. Volume 4 would have dealt with systems recognizing the microcosm of the human

BOOK : CURIOSITIES FROM THE PACIFIC OCEAN from the Bruny d'Entrecasteaux Expedit
Curiosities from the Pacific Ocean: A Remarkable Rediscovery in the Tropenmuseum. Amsterdam: Thirteen Ethnographic Objects from the Bruny d'Entrecasteaux Expedition(1791-1794) 71 pages color and b&w photos Hard cover with dust jacket 29 x 23 cm 0.634 kg English At the end of the 18th century the frenchman Joseph Bruny d’Entrecasteaux sailed the western part of the Pacific Ocean. On the return voyage. This famous expedition visited an intermediate port-of-call on Java making use of the harbour facilities of the Dutch East Indies. The senior Dutch VOC official, S.C. Nederburgh, temporarily stationed on Java at the time, was able to acquire a number of the objects collected during the expedition, and that is why part of the Bruny d’Entrecasteaux collection ended up in a Dutch museum. The objects. Eleven clubs, a spear and a food pounder, ... moredeserve more attention than they have received until now. They were acquired by the French expedition on several Melanesian and Polynesian islands in 1792 and 1793, some thirteen years after the English explorer James Cook's third and final voyage. They therefore number among the oldest Oceanic collections found in ethnographic museums in the West. This volume traces in great detail the history of acquisition of these important and interesting objects now stored in Dutch and French ethnographic institutions. Such serendipity is extremely rare for museum objects acquired more than two hundred years ago. Powered by The free listing tool. List your items fast and easy and manage your active items.

BOOK : BEING OBJECT/ ART (art, African, Océanie, Asian, Africa, Southeast Asia
Being Object. Being Art 323 pages color photos Hard cover with dust jacket 28 x 22 cm 1.962 kg English Cultures contribute to the richness of this world through their uniqueness and variety- as do their material products. This is reflected in the ethnographic collections from Africa. The Americas, Southeast Asia, Oceania and East Asia at the Museum of World Cultures in Frankfurt am Main. Using exceptional photographs. 130 works are presented from a total of approximately 67,000 objects in the museum’s collection. Based on their own individual and subjective points of view, the authors have selected particularly unusual'ethnographica, everyday objects or ritual items from an abundance of mostly similar objects made by indigenous societies. The objects in this volume are not only elucidated in their ethnological contexts, but are simultaneously ... moredescribed and interpreted as works of art. In order to better understand these works of art, the authors question the environment in which a work was created and which ideas about color, form, symmetry, balance, etc. might have influenced their artists. The common goal is to present what it is about these works that are exceptional, elaborate, other, perfect or in fact imperfect, harmonious or disturbing. However. The significance of an object is not invariably determined by its original heritage and purpose. Ideas and thoughts associated with an object also alter with a change of viewers and owners. Consequently, the effect of a work of art can only be comprehended within the analysis of aesthetic ideas and a prior knowledge by its respective viewers. Here, the various aesthetic concepts of indigenous and Western societies collide and ideally will lead to reactions that mediate between the differing perspectives. Powered by The free listing tool. FRENCH BOOK : Locks of Dogon Country (africa, mali, burkina)
NATIVE AMERICAN & ESKIMO INDIAN ARTS & CRAFTS - RALPH T. COE COLLECTION
The Responsive Eye: Ralph T. Coe and the Collecting of American Indian Art” By Ralph T. Coe. Published in New York by the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 2003. description continues below the picture- DISCUSSION: Published in conjunction with the exhibition"The Responsive Eye: Ralph T. Coe and the Collecting of American Indian Art" Over the past three decades. Ralph T. Coe has traveled extensively throughout the United States and Canada to assemble this collection of Native American art, one of the finest in private hands today. Immersed in the cultures of Native America, he has come to know artists and artisans, traders, dealers, and shop proprietors, selecting the very best they have to offer. The Ralph T. Coe Collection includes representative pieces from most Native American geographic regions and historical periods, beginning ... morewith objects dating back to the fourth millennium B.C. Many examples-men's shirts with ermine fringe, weapons, and button blankets-evoke the heroic lifestyle of the past, while small objects, such as tipi and kayak models, dolls, and tiny moccasins, speak to a more intimate significance. Ritual objects imbued with spiritual meaning-masks and katsinas, tablitas and medicine bundles-as well as utilitarian objects, such as pottery and baskets, also have a strong presence. This catalogue tells the stories of nearly two hundred of these objects, combining art history with personal reminiscence, and reveals the role Coe has played in bringing about awareness of the artistic heritage of Native America. DESCRIPTION: Hardcover. 8.5"x11.5" 340 pages, 230 illustrations(202 in full color) dust jacket. CONDITION NOTES: In fine. Clean condition. Book : African Dolls / Afrikanische Puppen : The Dulger Collection
African Dolls/ Afrikanische Puppen: The Dulger Collection 176 pages color photos Hard cover 25 x 17 cm 0.720 kg English& German In South Africa dolls are part of a tribe’s cultural heritage. They are objects that are laden with associations and the ritual and religious beliefs of a community. African dolls are seen as mediators between the natural and the supernatural; they were created in a great variety of materials and used for ritual. Spiritual and healing purposes. All dolls of this collection come from a Zulu household in Msinga. A tribal region in the former province of Natal, today KwaZulu-Natal, on the eastern coast of South Africa. Made by women of the tribe between 1987 and 1994, they document the end of an agrarian-oriented population and the development towards a modern industrial society in South Africa. In numerous interviews ... morewith the women of this tribe, the author Frank Jolles captured the meaning and the content of this collection, which has been passed on over many generations from mothers to daughters. An impressive collection of 109 African dolls from the second half of the twentieth century. The author describes in detail the ritual. Spiritual and healing importance of every object.

This remarkable book, filled with thousands of beautiful and distinctive objects, many of them never before published, presents the first comprehensive study of Indian adornment from prehistoric times to the present. For more than ten years. The author conducted extensive research, photographed artifacts, and interviewed tribal elders and artists throughout the continent. Dubin sets the stage with an introduction to the earliest known Americans and the artifacts they left behind. She then focuses on the cultures of specific regions, moving across North America, from the Arctic and Subarctic to the Woodlands, the Plains, the Plateau, the Great Basin, the Northwest Coast, California, and the Southwest. Her richly informative text traces the development of techniques and styles across regional and cultural boundaries and incorporates remembrances and insights from dozens of Native artisans and elders.
