A Fine Ngaady Amwaash/ Kete. Kuba, Congo- FINE PROVENANCE Wood. Fine patina, white kaolin, remains of pigments, cowrie shells. Hammered coper, beads, ... morefur, large bell-shaped mask, hallowed eyes with one small see slit, geometric patterns. Kuba peoples call themselves“children of Woot” in honor of their founder. Kuba art is characterized by its use of geometric patterns and cowrie shells. Three types of mask have been associated with dances that take place within the royal compound. The first. Called Mwaashamboy represents Woot. Founder of the Bushoong tribe. The second, known as Ngaady Amwaash. Personifies Woot‘s incestuous sister-wife. The third mask, the Bwoom. Represents a pygmy and is associated with Woot‘s evil brother. This mask. Ngaady Amwaash portrays Mweel. Woot's beautiful sister and wife(alternatively, mother) and who represents women in general. The mask is striking with its strong pattern of white and black triangles painted on the face, which are said to represent hearthstones and domesticity. Lines painted down the cheeks represent tears and recall the pain of death, for royal masks often appear in funerary contexts. The tears also denote the hardship of a woman's life as a"pawn" of male authority befitting the mask's name(Ngaady aMwaash) which means"pawn woman of Mwaash, her husband/brother king. The Ngaady Amwaash and Moshambwooy masks dance together on ceremonial occasions with great dignity and pride“ University of Virginia. African Masks Signs of use. H: 48 cm(19 inch) Provenance: L. Title, Lwena Mask Red Face Angola DR Congo African Type of Object, Mask, Country of Origin, DR Congo. Angola, People, Lwena, Materials, wood. Paint cotton ... morecloth, vegetal fibers, Approximate Age, second half 20th century, Dimensions, 9.25 inches H. x 6.25 inches W. 17 inches long with hood, Overall Condition, Good. Most of our pieces have spent decades on at least two continents. And have been treasured by several owners.  Small splits, scrapes and cracks are a normal part of their patina attesting to their age and extensive use. We examine each piece carefully when we receive it and report any damage we find in our listings. Please look carefully at the pictures which may also reveal condition and damage. Damage/Repair, worn cloth, Additional Information: A finely carved face mask embellished with red and white paints. Its perimeter is surrounded with cotton cloth and plaited vegetal fibers The use of cotton cloth and the red paint are unusual for the Lwena. But the coffee-bean eyes, the pointed nose as well as the fine mouth are of Lwena style. Isolated groups of Lwena have historically settled alongside, and mingled with, villages in the southern DRC, so it is not too surprising to see one of their African masks display sparse Congo minimalism more aligned to the Lega and Lele than the artistically formal Angolan groups, like the Chockwe. This attribution is by no means a given, but the charm and surprising power of this African mask is undeniable. It is a fascinating example of the profound and far-reaching influence of masking traditions from the southern Congo. This mask would add some colors to a collection. The Lwena people. Neighbors of the well-known Chokwe people, share much with the Chokwe in the forms of their art and culture, however Lwena art is less varied consisting primarily of masks and female figures. For example the complex facial markings combine Chokwe patterns with added Lwena variations. 87081* All content. Including pictures, Copyright Africa Direct Inc. 2006 Add U

These rare naturalistic-style masks, formerly produced by the Kongo peoples of the Congo River, are known to be diviner masks. According to Raoul Lehuard, ... morethey would be specifically owned by the nganga diphomba, a very important diviner and the only one authorized to wear a face mask. His function within Kongo societies was "to uncover hidden things, to name the perpetrator of a fault, to clarify the reason for an accident [...] to put an end to drought, etc." (Lehuard, Art Bakongo, Masks, 1993, p. 774)

They have lived close to the Mangbetu for many years, and for much of this period they have been at war with them. Despite the fact that the Mangbetu were eventually defeated, the more well-known artworks of the Zande, like musical instruments, often display Mangbetu elements. In addition to musical instruments, primarily figural harps, they also produce curious small, abstract statuettes called"yanda, used in ceremonies to celebrate fertility. Works of the Zande are quite rare, particularly masks. Their uses are poorly understood but, like most masks from the area, are probably associated with a boy's coming of age ceremony, which concludes with circumcision. Zande masks share stylistic elements with a range of cultures, like the Lega, the numerou

The Tabwa are a tiny tribe of more than 200. 000 in the Upper River Region of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, formerly Zaire. Tabwa art has only recently come to be identified as a separate style often confused with the sculpture of their neighbors or others who took Tabwa identity. Tabwa figural sculptures represent ancestors who were to assist in daily activities and during the hunt. Tabwa art is both a symbol and an aesthetic statement as the figures are often elaborately scarified in a fashion known among them until the middle of the twentieth century. Their carvings usually stand on a circular base with slightly bent knees and hands resting on their abdomen. Sometimes the hairstyle is a George Washington queue. The distinctive facial scarification consisting of a number of lines along the sides of the face and along the forehead and abdomen were the means whereby Tabwa identified themselves to localities and social status. Elaborate and attractive patterns and designs were worked into the skin according to the Tabwa concept of ‘kulemba’ that reflect aestheti

The tightly woven cap made of small strips of cane extends from the back of the mask to allow the mask to be worm and supported on the wearer’s head. Living mainly in the forested areas of south-west Nigeria. On both sides of the Niger River the Igbo number some ten million individuals. Mainly farmers and merchants, they also hunt and fish. They are subdivided into thirty-three subgroups and are spread out among about two hundred villages scattered through the thick forest or semifertile marshland. Only on the northern and western edges of the area, under influence from Igala and Benin, are hereditary rulers found. The heads ... moreof families form the council of elders, which shares its power with numerous secret societies. These societies exercise great political and social influence. They are highly hierarchical, their members passing from one level to the next. There is strong social pressure toward individual distinction, and men can move upward through successive grades by demonstrating their achievements and their generosity. The lack of overall centralization among the Igbo-speaking peoples has been conducive to the development of a great variety of art styles and cultural practices. The earliest sculpture known from Igboland is from the village of Ibo Ukwu. Where the grave of a man of distinction and a ritual store, dating from the 9th century AD, contained both chased copper objects and elaborate castings of leaded bronze. Ibo sculpture is subject to rather strict rules: the figures are generally frontal, symmetrical, and upright, with legs slightly spread, arms held away from the body, and hands stretched forward, palms open. Additional Information: This extraordinary carved mask with a transverse crest ... morewith brightly painted rays and the dramatic rounded eyes and square mouth mask is interesting in that it sets a problem of identification. Masks with these markings have been attributed in the past to the Tetela or Sungu people. A Tetela sub-group, neighbors to the Songye. However recent scholarship attributes such masks to the Songye people and denies the existence of masks among the Tetela. See De Husch, L. ‘Beauty is elsewhere: Returning a verdict on Tetela masks.’ In Objects: Signs of Africa. 1995. pp. 175-194. It is probable that such a mask was inspired by the Songye masks The miter-like form on the top. As well as the squared mouth recall some Songye mask from a localized identification to a Songye Tempa sub-group. If really Tetela-Sungu this should be considered as new forms of art among these peoples demonstrating a strong Songye influence. This mask reflects some of this crossing of stylistic boundaries possibly showing Songye style and other influences. If truly Songye, this mask would indeed be a variant or late style of this particular type of Songye mask. This is a late example of its kind that was probably used during the initiation and circumcisio

In these dances, Bwoom seeks both the mythical throne of his brother, Mwaash A Mboy, as well as the king's wife, Ngaady A Mwaash. Bwoom, a pygmy, symbolically speaks for the common man, with all the temptation and folly that entails. This colorful trio of characters comprises the recognized pantheon of the royal helmet masks, which are eagerly sought-after by collectors and museums. See SCULPTURE AFRICAINE, by Fagg. This mask has a bulbous forehead and an underslung jaw. Copper ornaments the forehead. Raffia headdress and beard are embroidered with cowries. And beads are found on nose, forehead, lips, and back of headdress. The raffia is hand-woven. This mask has a lot of presence and would stand out in any collection. The Bowers Museum Collections Department notes“within the Kasai province in central Democratic Republic of Congo are a number of very small, sometimes ancient ... moretribes who have retained their individuality. Among them are the Bena Biombo who are best known for their masks of diverse type. This mask with half-closed eyes and arched eyebrows radiates a peaceful, benevolent air. The incised geometric designs across the cheeks and chin indicate tribal scarifications. Although Bena Biombo masks resemble those neighboring tribes, the three appendages on top of the head identify this mask as originating with the Bena Biombo. Feathers are attached to the top of the mask when it is worn. A woven support of reed encases the back of the mask to provide a secure fit for the wearer's head and ruffled grass extends from the back of the meshed reed around to the front of the mask. Although masks of this type may have served other religious and ceremonial purposes at an earlier date, today they are used primarily for entertainment and masquerades(Bena Biombo Mask, 2007) The extraordinary Biombo helmet mask we have up for auction was formerly in the Lewis Pate. Formerly Zaire) Numbering some 150,000 people, Songye society is patrilineal, and governed by a highly revered male chief. They share common ancestors ... moreand oral traditions with the Luba people of the DRC, and subsist by farming or hunting. Because rivers are believed to be the repository of the souls of revered ancestors, Songye people are extremely reluctant to fish. Once a vital part of the the warrior's gear, are still hand-carved of wood, and often include the intimidating face and violently zig-zagging grooves that would once have frightened the enemy in battle. These grooved patterns are typical of Songye pieces, and may represent the scarifications that Songye warriors cut into their faces. They are among the most belligerent of all African masks. The presence of a central crest on a Songye mask identifies that mask as male. The female kifewebe has no crest but plain coiffure on its head. The size of the crest on male masks determines the magic power contained in the mask. Masquerades supplement these masks with woven costumes and long raffia beards. Songye masks are easily identified by their striations and their shapes. The eyes. Noses and mouths are carved in. Often. The lips form star-shaped puckers to give t
