The arts of the Yoruba are as numerous as their deities. And many objects are placed on shrines to honor the gods and the ancestors. Beautiful sculpture abounds in wood and brass and the occasional terracotta. Varied masking traditions have resulted in a great diversity of mask forms. This Yoruba helmet mask, with its characteristic enlarged head and bulging eyes, was worn during communal rituals known as“Gelede. The Gelede society honors the mystical powers of ancestors and the elderly women of the tribe. These dynamic masquerade performances take place during funerals and annual agricultural ceremonies. This fine Gelede example was acquired from a private Delaware collector who amassed a large collection West African materials. Chest, and belly body painted in white The Punu. Like their relatives the Shira and the Lumbo, fled the Fang and settled in the equatorial forests of southern Gabon. Little is known about their history or way of life. They do appear to have connections to the Fang and Kota in their religious and ancestral rituals. The Punu are known for their maiden spirit masks with white face used in the context of the Mukuji society. Most of the known Punu statues are small works with face painted in white as on their masks, thought to be used as guardian figures. Sculpted figures among the Punu have been identified as prestige and magical figures during special ceremonies. They were placed in close proximity to funerary bundles of revered ancestors. On this figure. The white pigment as well as the closed eyes reflect the spirituality and the face of the figure with its high eyebrow and forehead markings are based upon the marvelously carved Mukudj masks active among the Punu. Mukudj masks were worn by male dancers at funerals of honored elder males in which the white face portrays an idealized female with a well defined helmet-like hair style that crowns her head and surrounds her face. Though the face has a calm expression the figure is shown in a dance that is of great vigor and movement and she maintains her sense of composure and calm. The elegant coiffure and body and the face marking portray the figure as a mature woman of great composure and beauty, balancing action to an extraordinary sense of reserve. We bought this old mask in New York about 20 years ago. We have no idea of its provenance or exact age. But thought it was just a powerful piece of old sculpture. Originally, it would have had some kind of skin and/or cloth finish on the forehead; some old nails are still in the wood. The surface has a beautiful patina from long use. The length is about 13 inches. It has its own custom-made stand.

Additional Information: This interesting mask surmounted with a carved animal and wooden pegs as indication of the mask's hairstyle comes from the Mambila of Cameroon. The round face shows a strong nose wearing a beaded ring. Tubular eyes with red seeds and cowry shells encrusted into. It has been painted several times traces of white and red pigments can be seen on the surface. There is no indication of the mouth. The holes around the mask were used to support the vegetal fibers. Very little is known about the use and function of the Mambila masks such as this. Living in the Grasslands region of Cameroon and Nigeria. The Mambila people organize annual festivals where masks would perform at the end of the planting and harvesting seasons, in June-July and December-January. Dancers would wear brightly-painted, carved wooden masks or a grass-woven costume dance in a strictly ranked order of appearance that includes a cephalomorphic helmet mask such as this one followed by a zoomorphic mask called Suah Bur and a similar, but smaller mask called Suah Dua. A well carved mask with a typical Baule serene expression that would stand well in any collection! Details on our mask suggests stylistic links to other Cote d'Ivoire groups like the Baule. Traditional Baule elements are elaborate keloid scarification on the forehead. Almond shaped eyes, long and finial nose, the small close mouth, and the serene expression of the face. The carved ... morebeard is shared by both the Baule and Yaure and also by the Guro and means the mask portrays a male character. Such masks fall into a special grouping known âportrait masksâ. Kpan Pre, Kpan Kpan. The refined carved face may be similar to the person for whom the mask was originally carved to represent. This mask is a classic example of the Katundu Style characterized by its triangular and heavy-lidded half closed eyes under a bulging forehead. Its slightly turned-up nose, and the marks on the cheeks. This well carved mask is distinctive due to the complete ruff of grasses still attached to the mask and for the condition of itâs painted surface. Up for bid is a very nice vintage Hand Made Wooden Hong Kong 3 Mask Sailing Vessel with a Hand Made Carved Stand in the shape of a Bridge. This was made in the early 1950's. Displayed for years, then packed and stored away. It was taken out of the box to take the pictures. There is a few pieces missing from the vessel and a little paint loss under the stand, but overall, it's in nice condition considering it's over 60 years old.The lenght of the ship is 8" long X 6 1/2" Tall. Pigments. Feathers(Turkey) and some old mother of pearl buttons. The feathers I think have been added to replace the old ones at a later date. It could be that the original ones had deteriorated or were from a species listed on the migratory bird act. In any case the job was very well done. We have had a museum stand professionally made for this item and are including it with the piece. The item has been professionally curated and cleaned. This fine piece comes from an estate sell out of New Mexico. It was originally in the Dugan Collection there. The owners got it from that collection and have had it ever since. The headdress is very similar to those found on some Kuba masks. The Leele(or Lele)live in the confluence of the Sankuru and Kasai Rivers in territory which adjoins the land of the Kuba. Their sculpture and utilitarian objects such as cups, containers, pipes and musical instruments, show clear Kuba influence. The offered mask is attributed to the Ngbandi athough it comes from an area where a number of different groups living within close proximity to Ubangi-Lualaba Rivers share culture. Language, political and religious structures which influences their arts. The ridge of scarification on the nose is a significant trait in the identification of the masks from this region. The Ngbandi as well as the Ngbaka live in an area bounded by the Ubangi and Lualaba River systems with the Ngombe scattered along the Lualaba River The Ngbaka moved into the area inhabited by the Ngbandi and as a result both groups share sculpture forms and the details of scarification that often leads to some confusion as to the attribution of their masks. Carved of wood, they are worn tied to a basket on the head and thus are actually a headdress and not a mask. The body is hidden by a raffia or hemp fiber costume. The chiwara is the mythical hero who came from the skies to teach the people to farm. Tji is a word that means work and‘wara” is animal, thus a Tji Wara is an animal of labor or work. Most chiwara headdresses are part roan antelope and part man. Many chiwara have elements of other animals. The chiwara is one of the'societies" of the Bamana. I am not sure of the country of origin. It has no label, but from research it may be from Mexico/Latin America. It is 7.5" tall. 5.5' Wide, and 2.5" deep. It has a black base that may be ceramic or stone. It is made of about 60 pieces of cut abalone and is cemented together on the inside. It looks in almost new undamaged condition and will be well packed for shipment. This is highly polished and may have a protective clear coating. Deep undercut eyes and strong nose, rectangular mouth showing carved teeth, and balls wound of reeds which make up the headpiece and dangle from the chin. The balls are made of reeds, and the rope is handmade, of raffia. The face is embellished with metal studs in forehead, along the nose and mustachio. The netting at the back holds the mask on the face. This is a well carved ... moremask coming with its own custom stand. The Salampasu people who live east of the Kasai and on the upper western reaches of the Lulua River in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and even flow over into Angola. They have had long term contact with the Lwalwa to the north and to the south the Lunda who they recognize by paying tributes to them. The Salampasu are best known for their powerfully aggressive masks like this one. In many cases. The face is covered with tiny copper sheets. Masks among the Salampasu are known under different names. Munkika, Kasangu and Mulandwa. This one is most likely a Kasangu mask. All these masks were worn during initiation into the menâs warrior societies Idangani and Ibiku. During funeral ceremonies for dignitaries and in Boys' initiation and circumcision rituals. The Leele(or Lele) live in the confluence of the Sankuru and Kasai Rivers in territory which adjoins the land of the Kuba. They have a number of similarities with the Kuba. And share the same language and history. Their sculpture and utilitarian objects such as cups, containers, pipes and musical instruments, show clear Kuba influence. ITEM CONDITION: Good condition overall. Front viewing surface is in great condition with no cracks. Chips, or major scratches. There may be some fine scratches that went unnoticed by me but it would be very minor. Back side of mask has two cracks which do not go through to the front and the mask is structurally solid. Masks with these markings have been attributed in the past to the Luluwa. Tetela, sungu or other Sankuru peoples, neighbors to the Songye. However recent scholarship indicates most of the masks from this region do come from the Songye. A close similar mask from The Trustees of the British Museum. London and published in AFRICA. THE ART OF A CONTINENT p. 281 is attributed to the Songye. Our mask could well be a work from a Songye sub-group. This mask reflects some of this crossing of stylistic boundaries possibly showing Songye style and other influences. This mask may indeed be a variant style of Kifwebe type of Songye masks. Notwithstanding its origin this is a strongly carved mask with obvious signs of long use and good age. The Songye live in an area of savanna crossed by numerous major river systems. They have a long history of migration and cultural interchange especially with the Luba from whom they are said to have originated. Additional Information: This superb naturalistic wooden mask comes from the Bete of Cote d'Ivoire who live ... morealong the Sassandra River in large villages organized according to family lineages. Like neighboring peoples such as the We. Grebo or the Dan and especially the Grebo whose influence can be seen in this mask, the Bete carve and use masks of extraordinary form and inventiveness to represent the untamed forces of nature that Bete identify as âGle or Greâ. On this mask, facial features are sculpturally far more realistic than most of the Bete masks. The eyes are in coffee-bean forms; in the center is a narrow nose with an accentuated ridge; the open mouth reveals carved teeth. A center-line dividing the the forehead into two parts reaches the nose's root. A triple-line forms the limits of the hairstyle. Masks such as this were worn during funerals. Judicial proceedings or at times will dance to simply entertain clansmen and villagers. The surface of the mask has a thick coating of the remains of smoke and dust indicating the long use and age of the mask especially where the mask was worn and handled. Beautiful. Large Ivory Coast African mask on steel stand. Twenty inches tall, ornately carved, beautiful dark brown patina to the wood, and interesting bamboo and burlap and cloth hair dreads. Just a really impressive piece.Age unknown, from an estate sale. This piece is more of an art sculpture than anything else. Would be an impressive addition to any room. It's much nicer than most of the masks you see. Condition is good, no cracks, breaks or structural problems. It's heavy, weighs about 15 lbs.

The helmet mask is nicely embroidered with cowrie shells and beads. This mask is well carved and beautifully decorated. It has a lot of presence and its overall condition is very good. In fact. Without the bulging forehead which identifies"M'boom" or"Bwoom, the mask would have been difficult to categorize. This is probably due to the diverse stylistic elements found throughout Kuba territory, as the mask has features more commonly found among the Kuba sub-groups. Bwoom" represents the evil brother in ceremonial reenactments of Kuba mythology, as well as the inevitable struggle for power among individuals.
