A retablo is a traditional Latin American folk art devotional painting. And then often focus on Catholic iconography. This oil painting on tin features a male saint wearing a green cloak and hat, holding a black staff in one hand and a basket of flowers in the other. His staff has either a bell or a pouch affixed to it. The man has quite a content look on his face. He is surrounded by curtains and flowers, and by four panels of reverse-painted glass with vivid and brightly colored flowers against a shining gold background. I believe that this represents Saint Patrick, but this is open to interpretation. This really is a stunning piece of historically important art. ... moreThis retablo measures 15.5 inches tall by 11.5 inches across at the wides part. Where there are wings near the top of the frame. It measures 3/4 of an inch deep. The central painting is on a tin background, and the rectangular panels that surround it on four sides depict vivid, colorful flowers and gold which are reverse-painted on glass. The left panel of glass is cracked and a piece of it is missing. The top panel has a crack in the center but no glass is missing and this hairline fracture will not cause further damage. Aside from this, the retablo is in great condition for a piece of folk art that has spent many years on display. I researched it and believe it was part of their Mexican exhibition in the 1920's. It is hand painted in oil on tin. It is unusual in that it has a typical Virgin as the central scene surrounded by saints and scenes in cartouche form around her. I believe this is an oldie and dates to the earlier 1800's. Condition is as shown. It has holes punched into it from mounting, has some rust, more so at the base, some loss of paint and some breaks on the edges. Not bad for its age and use. You are viewing a rare and very hard to find piece of Mexican folk art. The retablo is unique with Mary having a ornate crown with jewels. The retablo is old but is in a New Mexico style box. The top part of the box with glass lifts off to reveal the retablo. This piece was in my parents collection and was purchased in New Mexico from a Santa Fe dealer. Mexican Antique Retablo Painting - Virgin Mother
Exquisite antique Mexican retablo style religious painting on canvas from Mexico. An excellent showpiece in any Mexican art or religious collection. 17 x 22 inch image size and 20 x 25 overall with frame. The painting appears to have been re-stretched and re-framed sometime in the 1960's. 70's, as was the case with a few items in the collection I acquired. The piece appears to have had a couple of small issues which were expertly repaired sometime ago. The white dots on the verso are gesso, which apparently was used to patch some tiny holes. It is possible that some of the brown paint on the curve on the right hand side of the luna at the feet of the Virgin were touched up. Still, you have to look very carefully to notice. Outstanding overall.

As with other pieces from this recently acquired collection. The painting appears to have been profesionally re-stretched and re-framed sometime in the 1960's- and well done. The canvas is very tight. On the verso you can see where gauze was applied to stabilize the canvas. In a couple of spots the muslin appears to have been applied to fix pinholes. Antique New Mexico or Southwest Trinity Retablo on Tin
This auction is for an antique trinity retablo on tin purchased from a dealer that specializes in these several years ago. It has been hanging on the wall in my church office. It has the mexican depiction of the trinity as three men(father. Son, holy spirit) seated above"the world" The composition is outstanding and the paint is vivid with paint loss, rust, and scratches shown in the pictures. The back is rusty and blank. Antique Mexican Carved and Painted Wood Retablo ~ 19th or Early 20th Century ~ Possibly Saint Francis ~ please scroll down for more photos and information ~ SIZE: Height-15.75" 40 cm) Width- 11.5" 29.2 cm) Depth- 1.8" 4.6 cm) DESCRIPTION: Fine old Mexican or Latin American carved. Gessoed, painted and gilded wood retablo in the form of a three dimensional sculptural carved plaque. This piece dates from the 19th or very early 20th century. Is in the 17th- 18th century Spanish Colonial style, and may be a depiction of Saint Francis. The Saint is holding a book and looking upward and a silver halo surrounds his head. The retablo is carved from a single piece of wood(several pieces joined together and then carved from the one block) and has great detail and beauty. The flat background is a fantastic sea and mountain landscape painting ... moremade by inscribing into the paint allowing the silver leaf behind to show through. The Saint is fully carved and detailed with gesso over the wood. Which has then been painted and covered with gold leaf and silver leaf, in the classical Spanish style. The life-like details are amazing and the decoration is ornate. This piece is painted blue on the reverse and outer edges of the raised integrated frame. On the outer side of left edge is a stamped mark in Spanish. Which is a bit hard to read, but looks to be the mark of a guild or Art- artisan's school. Some of the finest retablos and church altars come from these type of artisan's institutes in Latin and SouthAmerican and this is certainly a very fine example of craftsmanship and religious art. AGE: Late 19th or very early 20th century. CONDITION: Good condition. As shown in the photos and with the following noted: Old worn darkened patina. Wear to the back and edges of the wood and painted surfaces.Small chips and crazing to the painted gesso surfaces. No major breaks, cracks, or damage. Dating from the 19th century and probably Mexican in origin. This retablo depicts Santiago Matamoros. In English, Saint James the Moor-slayer. Painted on heavy gauge tin. Saint James is usually depicted in retablo art as he is seen here, upon his majestic white horse with wielded sword and a defeated Moorish soldiers underfoot. In this case one soldier has been beheaded. This work is beautifully painted in a naive manner. With a richly colored palette and excellent graphics. Unsigned- undated. Circa 1850. You are bidding on a fine old Spanish retablo painting on tin– probably from the late 1800’s and probably Mexican in Origin. This retablo depicts an execution with holy figure– Mary or angel. I don’t know but she has given one of the men to be executed what looks like a candle– the other bad man is being held by 3 soldiers with guns. There is Spanish writing on the bottom half but I can’t make it out. It measures 7” tall by 10” wide and is very worn vintage condition– please see pictures.
