Antique/Vintage African EngravedTribal Collar Necklace - Silvered Copper
phlippa Very old African tribal collar necklace.hand engraved. The main part looks to be silver plated copper.but most of the silver has come off. The drop appear to be a base metal. I do not know the exact age of this piece but the engraving is finely done. I had trouble enough identifying it as African. It certainly must have taken a fair while for all the silver to come off. But i'm sure it is very decorative and collectable. All the jewellery i am selling has just had a slight clean for photos and could do with further cleaning depending on buyers taste. NB overseas buyers please note i only offer airmail post as courtesy as i know how expensive postage an be but cannot insure it as Royal Mail will not insure me. I do however provide proof of posting but take this option is only at buyers risk. NB. The boring but necessary bit. It ... morehas come to my attention that various private sellers of collectables have had their selling accounts suspended due to bad star markings on feedback especially dispatch/postage time. I am sure most buyers will not be aware that ebay really do take seriously when you don't award 5 stars. African Tribal Rare Antique Ashanti Cast Bronze Gold Sand Box
Fine Ashanti Antique(circa late 1800s) Asante Kuduo Bronze Gold Dust Box with mongoose figure on the lid. From the old private collection of the internationally celebrated artist and ardent Africanist. This is a rare. Museum quality authentic artifact(circa late 1800s) The item is about 3 5/8" diameter x 2 1/2 hight with lid in excellent antique condition. Gold dust was the medium of exchange in West Africa for hundreds of years. Accordingly. A range of paraphernalia associated with storing, handling and weighing gold dust was developed. This box is one such item. It was used for storing and carrying gold dust. It is cast in the manner of the gold weights used in weighing gold themselves- using the lost wax process. The lid fits in the box and fits tightly, even though it has been cast separately. The lid has been cast with a series ... moreof wave patterns. Indeed, the box is similar in appearance to the weights used to measure gold dust. Possibly, this was to divert attention from its contents. But equally, it is possible that such boxes were used as weights themselves. The box has excellent patina and very obvious age from many years of handling. Gold dust was stored in such boxes. It was kept inside the box wound up in a cloth. Spoons were used to ladle the dust from box to scales. And personal weights were used to weigh gold dust which became the currency used to settle everyday transactions. Each party to any transaction would typically use their own weights. The negotiating process not only would include the cost in gold dust of the items being transacted over but also a comparison of weights. Debate over the scales used and the purity of the gold dust(gold often was adulterated with brass filings) Even transactions as rudimentary as buying vegetables in a street market necessitated this process. Cast brass gold dust paraphernalia was used by the Akan who occupy a large part of West Africa including parts of Ghana and the Ivory Coast and include many sub-ethnic groups such as the Baule and the Asante. Antique African Art and Rituals of Divination
Art and Oracle. African Art and Rituals of Divination” By Alisa LaGamma& John Pemberton III. Published by the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 2000. DISCUSSION: Throughout history and across the world. Humankind has sought clues about the future and attempted to control its fate by appealing to higher spiritual powers. In Africa, the legacy of such efforts is evident in works that display an especially diverse range of artistic expression. This publication presents fifty of the most representative works from twenty-eight African cultures as illustrative of various divination systems. In extensive commentaries. Each of these is examined from its distinct cultural perspective, and is considered both for its artistry and as a medium through which divine insights may be revealed. As a series, they provide insight into the commonalities and contrasts ... moreamong the different divination methods and the cultures in which they developed. They also reveal themselves as some of the most imaginative examples of African art, inspired by the human quest to reach beyond the limitations of ordinary experience. An essay by Professor John Pemberton III. Scholar of African religions, explores the world views and divination practices of five distinct regional traditions: the Azande, Luba and Songye, Yaka, Yoruba, and Malagasy. Pemberton demonstrates how these traditions represent some of the most widespread or distinctive forms of divination in African cultures, and identifies how they are points of departure for examining the comparative religious and social structures to which the practices relate. He considers the nature of the concerns and problems that are analyzed through divination, from chronic ailments to marital infidelity, and the specific divination techniques that have been developed to provide people with insight into their current dilemmas and give them direction for future action. Antique African Kirdi (Cameroons & Nigeria) Metal, Bead Modesty Apron/Cache-Sexe
African antique metal and bead Cache-Sexe. Modesty, pubic apron, from the Kirdi tribe in Cameroon and Nigeria. Item came from the large estate of a long time Santa Fe collector and dealer in African art. He had a gallery in Santa Fe in the 1960's and bought most of his things in the 1960's and 1970's. Many of the things I was lucky to buy were rare. At first I thought this item was a necklace. But found almost the same piece in the book"Africa Adorned" by Angela Fisher, copyright 1984, where she showed a Kirdi woman wearing a"picuran" as they are called there, with a similar brass and copper plaque and chain hanging, but this one has metal"nail" forms between the red beads, which research shows to be"phallic" symbols, sometimes also made and used as currency items. Both Fisher in"Africa ... moreAdorned" and Lois Sherr Dubin in her book“The History of Beads” states that the cache-sexes“were worn by women and girls for protection and to attract attention. Different cache-sexe styles identify group affiliations. Age grades, and special conditions such as puberty, marriage, and widowhood. The Cameroon government has long outlawed the wearing of the cache-sexes, but the practice continues under the cover of long robes, especially by older women. gsrx_vers_486(GS 6.5.1(486)

PLEASE ADD ME TO YOUR FAVORITES LIST* Hi! My name is Elena. I’m collecting ancient beads from 1979. Most of my beads were found in Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan. To be precise they were found between Mary city(Turkmenistan) and Samarkand(Uzbekistan) That area in past was called Bactria. Nowadays there are a lot of ruins ... moreolder than 2000 years in this region. I like ancient beads very much and want that other collectors will be able to obtain them without paying a lot of money. That is why my prices are very modest. I lived in Asgabat city(the capital of Turkmenistan) over 30 years. About 15 km from Asgabat there is Nisa– former residence of Alexander the Great. And capital of Parthia. In most cases the ancient beads. Not only played the role of jewelry but also the status of the person wearing them. You were able to tell the social status of an individual based on the beads they were wearing, while other used these beads as talismans protecting themselves against bad luck and the evil eye. Certain beads that have zigzagging lines are supposed to confuse the evil eye which would get lost in these lines. Beads that have the image of an eye try to just absorb the evil energy, and thus protect the person who is wearing them. Periodically the beads would be washed in salt water, because it is believe the salt water kills the negative energy. The image of the eye was sometimes very abstract and was more like an image of a flower, however sometimes the beads would correctly reflect the weare

Colors appearing on the viewers computer may appear different in comparison to the original object. Hi! My name is Elena. I’m collecting ancient beads from 1979. Most of my beads were found in Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan. To be precise they were found between Mary city(Turkmenistan) and Samarkand(Uzbekistan) That area in past was called Bactria. Nowadays there are a lot of ruins older than 2000 years in this ... moreregion. The image of the eye was sometimes very abstract and was more like an image of a flower, however sometimes the beads would correctly reflect the wearers eyes, including the colo
Antique African Tribal Ashanti Cast Bronze necklace pendant talisman
Beautiful Ashanti Pendant. This is a rare. Museum quality authentic artifact(circa early 1900) The size of the pendant is about 2" x 1 5/8 All items are traditionally handmade by Ashanti jewelrymakers. Amulets and Talismans: One of the most powerful forms of magic of African culture is that of the amulet or talisman. This can be used to attract love. Life, health, economic well-being and all types of benefit. Moreover, once consecrated, the amulet can be used to protect from spiritual predators and any kind of damage used by opposing dark forces. Since the dawn of man the various regions of African have looked to occult sciences and sacred truths. To this end. Esoteric traditions have begun to blend quickly. These may offer tribute to the Gods or to Nature, depending on the various branches of African magic, Palo, Obeah or Voodoo. They ... moremay also offer later syncretic traditions; as a result you may find Catholic Saints or other figures in Voodoo amulets and talismans. Many would consider the making and consecration of amulets and talismans one of the most important. But difficult, parts of the practice. As a result, those who were able to consecrate such amulets were often considered the wisest and most important of the practitioners. They were greatly respected and feared, both for their spiritual prowess and their ability to deal with the hidden psychological condition of others. If we study the different lines that divide these beliefs; Voodoo. Candomble, Palo, Obeah, etc. we often find more similarities than differences. The spirits, histories and rituals are similar or in many cases exactly alike. We also find roots in rituals of ancient African origins, as well as the initial tools intended to help spiritual growth and the realization of personal desires. Talismans were often created in these ancient rituals. Secretly consecrated with the power of a divine entity or spirit. They were used for various purposes from what is now considered“white” Voodoo magic, to finding love, and even harming enemies. Tod
Two African Antique Busts TERRA COTTA CLAY HEAD ARTIFACT
Uncle Ed had these sitting on his fire place mantel as long as he can remember. I think he moved here in the late 60's. There is a chip or two that reviles that they are made out of some type of clay therefore we are describing them as Terra Cot-ta. I have shown them to two experts that could not give me a value but said they are most likely Nigerian. They are each 24 inches tall with the stand. The heads alone are 18 inches from top to bottom and weigh 6.5 LBS each. The stands are 8 inches tall. One is a male and the other a female. A metal rod is attached to the head to drop into a hole on the top of the stand. There are no markings on the heads. Handmade! They will be shipped in separate boxes.

African Tribal Rare Dogon Antique Cast Bronze Unusual ring
Fine Ashanti Antique(circa late 1800s) Cast Bronze Gold weight. From the old private collection of the internationally celebrated artist and ardent Africanist. This is a rare. Museum quality authentic artifact(circa late 1800s) representing a King's ring with two horsemen. The item is about 2 1/2" high. Size 11 1/2-11 3/8 in excellent antique condition. Dogon art is extremely versatile. Although common stylistic characteristics– such as a tendency towards stylization– are apparent on the statues. Their art deals with the myths whose complex ensemble regulates the life of the individual. The sculptures are preserved in innumerable sites of worship, personal or family altars, altars for rain, altars to protect hunters, in market. As a general characterization of Dogon statues, one could say that they render the human body in a simplified ... moreway, reducing it to its essentials. Some are extremely elongated with emphasis on geometric forms. The subjective impression is one of immobility with a mysterious sense of a solemn gravity and serene majesty, although conveying at the same time a latent movement. Dogon sculpture recreates the hermaphroditic silhouettes of the Tellem, featuring raised arms and a thick patina made of blood and millet beer. The four Nommo couples, the mythical ancestors born of the god Amma, ornament stools, pillars or men’s meeting houses, door locks, and granary doors. The primordial couple is represented sitting on a stool, the base of which depicts the earth while the upper surface represents the sky; the two are interconnected by the Nommo. Horsemen are remainders of the fact that, according to myth, the horse was the first animal present on earth. The Dogon style has evolved into a kind of cubism: ovoid head, squared shoulders, tapered extremities, pointed breasts, forearms, and thighs on a parallel plane, hairdos stylized by three or four incised lines. Dogon sculptures serve as a physical medium in initiations and as an explanation of the world. They serve to transmit an understandin
Antique Black Americana? USA, brass Egypt medal. Sphynx has Black African face
Antique Black Americana? USA. Brass Egypt medal. Sphynx has Black African face, more distinctly so in normal viewing than in picture. This looked old when I got it 25 years ago and I think it is 50-100 years old. My educated guess is that it was produced for African Americans circa 1920-1960. Possibly as political propaganda. Please let me know if I am way off on this. Starting at a high price and I will greatly reduce my price if I am wrong. I am just a collector selling off my collection. I am steadily reducing the price on each item until it sells. Please note that I try to be conservative in my grading and rarity ratings. Free shipping and handling inside the US. Buyers outside the US. 15 dollars for registered mail with any number of items per shipment.

African Moroccan native women costumes c.1785 Exploration antique view
African Moroccan native women costumes c.1785 Exploration antique view A Female Habit much used in Africa/ A Female of Morocco Issued c.1785-90. London; by Alex. Hogg. Fine original antique engraving. Made approximately 220 years ago. Printed in 18th century England. On quality hand-made rag paper which retains its inherent structural flexibility and soundness. Created to illustrate a voyage of exploration and discovery across the world to the Southern Ocean and Pacific region. In the 18th century. Engraved illustrations such as this one were the primary method by which a person could see images of far away and exotic places. Voyages of discovery were then popular topics of discussion and men such as Dampier and Capt. Cook were heroes of their time. These"popular" types of prints were often sold individually and as part of illustrated ... moretravel accounts. All of which are now scarce and valuable today. They are much sought after as a visual record of a bygone era and are great conversational items once framed for display. When you stop to consider their age and the fact they are original engraved works of art. It's amazing how affordable they actually are. In Good+ or better condition. Some light small staining, minor paper wrinkling and age wear, most of which is visible in the photos[note: we grade very conservatively and always seek to disclose any noteworthy flaws] The printed area remains visually attractive. Rare Antique African Bronze Beads/Verdigris Patina/Estate, Archaeolgical Item
Rare. Antique bronze/brass metal beads bought at an estate sale of a Santa Fe collector of African art, who started accumulating his massive and varied beautiful collection in the 1960's and1970's These beads are very old, with a wonderful green verdigris patina, but the age is somewhat of a mystery. Here's what I have found so far: The bag that this strand was in had a tag stating"Sokoto. Nigeria; Ca. 300 BC; Archaeological find" Sokoto archaeological work took place on an offshoot of the Niger River. During the 1970's, after which these beads would have been bought, there was much archaelogical excavation in the Djenne area of Mali, by the Niger River, and metal, clay, glass beads, etc. from ancient cultures were found. There is an article on metalworking in Africa that states that metal working can be traced back ... moreto the early date of 300 BC, and another source states that beads of this shape have been made for thousands of years in Africa. Dubin's book on the History of Beads shows a similar excavated strand from Djenne, Mali and states that the beads may be from the late middle ages, c. AD 1200"when Western Sudanese kingdoms flourished and cities such as Djenne and Timbuktu were imprtant centers of learning and trade. It is not clear whether the beads were imported or made in Djenne" My new book. African Beads, Jewel of a Continent" by Evelyn Simak, is a wonderful reference for the history and trade of beads made in Africa, and it states that copper and bronze were late introductions, by trade, into Africa. They show an old patinaed necklace and date it as 19th century or earlier. So, I will let all you amateur archaeologists and bead lovers do you own research from here! I'm guessing that the beads are closer to the 1200-1500 date, when the old Djenne-Jeno, where excavation took place in the 1970's, was said to be abandoned. Necklace is 24" around. Strung by later people who probably found the beads in and around the ground of the older cultures. As a
African Tribal Extremely Rare Ashanti Antique Cast Bronze Amulet Pendant
Fine Ashanti Antique(circa late 1700s) Cast Bronze African Adornment. From the old private collection of the internationally celebrated artist and ardent Africanist. This is a rare. Museum quality authentic artifact(circa late 1800s) Amulet Pendant. The item is about 3" In excellent antique condition. These may offer tribute to ... morethe Gods or to Nature, depending on the various branches of African magic, Palo, Obeah or Voodoo. They may also offer later syncretic traditions; as a result you may find Catholic Saints or other figures in Voodoo amulets and talismans. Antique Venetian AFRICAN TRADE BEADS called "doojem" in Togo
African Trade Beads 28 inches of heyday Venetian wound beads. Called"doojem" in Togo, probably because they've been used heavily in the ritualistic gyrations of possessed"vodun" dancers. At least that's what my trader tells me. Rumors of strenuous boudoir acrobatics have not so far been confirmed. We got them off the raffia and restrung them in our amateurish way so at least they hang right. From the African trade, Togo specifically. Check King Zongo's list for more famous"trade" beads. Combining lots saves on postage. Buy'em if you like'em!

The 123 color and black-and-white photographs featured here highlight many of the finest and most interesting examples of the quilts, woven coverlets, counterpanes, rag rugs, and crocheted artifacts attributed to slave women and men. In a new preface. Fry reflects on the inspiration behind her original research-the desire to learn more about her enslaved great-great-grandmother, a skilled seamstress-and on the deep and often emotional chords the book has

Description: Striking and highly oversize map of whole African Continent in four sheets joined to make up two sheets. This map covers the entire continent of Africa from the Mediterranean to the Cape of Good Hope and from the Cape Verde Islands to Madagascar. Anville was a careful cartographer known for his scientific approach to mapmaking. And nowhere is this more evident than in this, his greatest and most innovative map of Africa. Following the trajectory set by Guillaume de L'Isle half a century earlier, D'Anville takes a number of significant steps forward in addressing the confusions inherent in mapping this ... morevast though mostly, in the mid-17th century, unexplored continent. These include unreliable cartographic suppositions regarding the African interior dating practically to antiquity. Many of these, including such speculative ideas as the'Mountains of Kong' have been diminished if not removed entirely from this map, leaving vast unexplored areas throughout. What was known of Africa. However, Anville incorporates here in an impressive compilation of the most up to date reports from colonial, missionary, and exploratory entradas into the interior of the continent. Thus well mapped parts of the continent are limited to the Mediterranean Coast, Morocco, the Senegambia, the Congo, South Africa, the Kingdom of Monomatapa, Abyssinia, and Egypt. Morocco, Egypt, and the southern Mediterranean Coast(Barbary) were well known to Europeans since antiquity and Anville's accurate mapping of these regions reflects continual contact. Further south the colonial enclaves along the Niger River(Senegal and Gambia) the Congo River, and South Africa reflect considerable detail associated with European penetration by trader and missionaries. The land of Monomopota around the Zambezi River wa
