African antique necklace or metal and bead Cache-Sexe. modesty, pubic apron) from the Kirdi tribe in Cameroon and Nigeria. Item came from the large estate ... moreof a long time Santa Fe collector and dealer in African art. He had a gallery in Santa Fe in the 1960's and bought most of his things in the 1960's and 1970's. Many of the things I was lucky to buy were rare. Several sources where I have seen a similar looking item called this a necklace. And it certainly would be worn as one, but I found almost the same piece in the book"Africa Adorned" by Angela Fisher, copyright 1984, where she showed a Kirdi woman wearing a"picuran" as they are called there, with a similar brass and copper plaque and chain hanging, but this one has metal"nail" forms between the red beads, which research shows to be"phallic" symbols, sometimes also made and used as currency items. Both Fisher in"Africa Adorned" and Lois Sherr Dubin in her book “The History of Beads states that the cache-sexes “were worn by women and girls for protection and to attract attention. Different cache-sexe styles identify group affiliations. Age grades, and special conditions such as puberty, marriage, and widowhood. The Cameroon government has long outlawed the wearing of the cache-sexes, but the practice continues under the cover of long robes, especially by older women. gsrx_vers_486(GS 6.5.1(486)

Both immediately recognizable and highly collectible. They can range from very simple to extremely ornate, are finely carved, and one could almost say archetypical of the'African Mask' ideal. Above anything, they are most interesting because of the beliefs that govern their production. The masks are considered highly sacred in the Dan culture, whose distribution ranges from Cote d'Ivoire to Liberia to Guinea. In many African cultures, the masks are representative of spirits, but in the case of the Dan, the mask IS the spirit, a tangible embodiment of the spirit itself. There are a variety of Dan face masks, each of which has a different function. They may be an intermediary, who acts between the village and the forest in initiation camps, wherein adolescent boys are segregated from the general population, or may act to work against brush fires during the dry season. They may also be used in pre-war ceremonies, for peace-making ceremonies, or simply for games and entertainment purposes. A common form of mask among the Dan people. The"passport" mask, as it is referred to by western cultures, was often carried by those traveling away from their village, and they were said to offer protection during such times. The masks could also be used to bear as a witness during an initiation ceremony. Often carried on the small of the back, these masks rarely exceeded ten inches in length. Title, Dogon Maternity Figure Sitting Mother with Child in Back Type of Object, Carving, Country of Origin, Mali, People, Dogon, Materials, Wood, Approximate ... moreAge, 20th Century/last quarter, Dimensions, Height is 11.5 inches, Overall Condition, Good Most ofour pieces have spent decades on at least two continents. And have been treasured by several owners. Small splits, scrapes and cracks are a normal part of their patina attesting to their age and extensive use. We examine each piece carefully when we receive it and report any damage we find in our listings. Please look carefully at the pictures which may also reveal condition and damage. Damage/Repair, Crack damages in several places. Large old chip in head, scrapes on forehead, on nose, and on mouth of mother and child. Additional Information: Dogon sculpture has long held a prominent place in collections of African Art as examples of the best that the African sculptor has created. This well used figure with the ‘child’ in the back projects maternal assurance and protection. Figures such as this of the seated mother holding a child are commonly called ‘maternity’ figures. However this term is slightly misleading as the figure in the back is more than a child and is most probably an adult with attributes of an adult. Sometimes a beard, or shown wearing jewelry or adult dress. What appears to occur, as in this figure, is reference to the ‘mother’ representing one of the original founding primordial beings who gave us birth(Nummo among the Dogon) or she could represent a lineage mother or simply represent the concept of life and fertility. Maternity figures serve a number of important symbolic roles but all must meet certain aesthetic requirements of representation and symbolic meaning. Classically carved figures such as this mother and child among some of the finest art produced in West Africa and the obvious quality of carving is impressive. Recommended Reading: Francine Ndiaye. Damage/Repair, wear. Cracks in the chin and to the back, large chips to the back, cracks repaired with glue in the back, Additional Information: An interesting wooden face mask with a large face and twelve eyes or six tubular projectiles on each side of the face and a long nose that divides the face in two sections and a prominent mouth. The mask is painted in white with traces of blue. This delightful mask comes from the Grebo people. The Grebo live in southeast Liberia at the border with the Ivory Coast. With the Bassa people on their west and the Bete and We to their east in the Ivory Coast. Grebo masks are best known for their influence on early western modern art being found in the collection of Picasso who obtained a Grebo mask from his dealer Kahnweiler in Paris. There is no doubt as to the influence of the Grebo style mask upon the development of western art for they are a complete example of geometry in sculpture with the flat face, a long nose and tubular projectiles. The startling geometry of this mask with the double lines of 6 tube tubes each, flanking the strong profile of the nose and protruding lips is indeed a tour-De-force of sculpture. Little is known about the use of masks among the Grebo other than the fact that they are said to have been worn during wars by leaders as a kind of military costume. The masks

Overall Condition, Fair, Damage/Repair, foot broken with missing toes and chip. age cracks thoughout the figure crack in one foot. Minor old chips in places. Additional Information: A Janus Reliquary Figure(Byeri Figures) from the Fang people(Ntumu Sub-group Northern Fang) Equatorial Guinea. This Janus guardian figure is not often noted among the Fang, although early reports mention male-female reliquary figures on shrines. This is a Very strong sculpture with a lot of presence! As sculpture. These Byeri figures stand out as a fine example of good carving in a later Fang style, and the sculptural detail is testament to the Fang artist who shaped them. Fang memorial sculpture has a long history of use and was in fact photographed as early as 1907(Tessmann 1913/1972, vol. II) However the cult of Byeri began to lose its prominence after 1910 due to colonial government pressure. During migrations which took place in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, the Fang people moved to their present area becoming part of a complex overlay of population of approximately 200,000 which stretches from southern Cameroon into Gabon and Equatorial Guinea. Living in small forest communities, the Fang focused upon tightly knit kinship and lineage systems. Stressing continuity and relationships, the kinship system was employed to emphasize the veneration of ancestors through the use of figurative sculptures. Each lineage's ancestors were located in family shrines, housing memorials or reliquary boxes known as byeri, containing their bones, under the care of an elder known as the Esa. The ancestors were consulted before any serious event such as hunting, traveling, marriage, war, or planting was undertaken. The Esa, the shrine keeper, was the oldest living member of the clan

This is an outstanding ethnographic spiritual relic imported from the Bamileke tribe of Cameroon. It's a vintage fertility figure that has been carved ... morefrom a heavyweight forest wood and covered with an elabroate display of African glass trade beads. Some of the beads are loose on the head so I am offering her at a discounted rate. It is nothing that takes away from the power of the piece. However. She measures 37" in height, 12" in width by 9" in depth and is very substantial. U.S. Parcel Post shipping will be $40.00. Paypal and checks accepted and all auctions are unconditionally guaranteed.
