Rare Roof Screen of Kuna House Mola Collected by Bob and Marianne Huber.Possibly Exhibited. The abstract design used in this mola is beautiful and entrancing in its own right- but even more interesting when you get the story behind the design. NO RESERVE! The History of Stirrups: In most civilizations the horse was used more in chariots than for riding until about 800 BC. Before stirrups most equestrian cultures used no support for the feet at all. There are records of a loose surcingle being employed behind the girth. Into which the feet ... morecould be tucked. Toe stirrups(loops of rope which held the big toe) were first recorded in Northern India in the 2nd century BC, their use was somewhat limited by climate and footwear. The first stirrups designed to take the entire foot were probably single mounting stirrups recorded in China in the 4th Century AD. The mounting stirrup was easier than using a stool to mount and safer than vaulting on when fully armed(Cambyses, king of Persia stabbed himself while mounting when fully armed in 522 BC- A.D.H.Bivar, The Stirrup and Its Origins. Oriental Arts, n.s. 1(1955) 61-68. Paired stirrups were first recorded in the 4th Century AD on a Chinese pottery horse and a stirrup has been found in a 4th Century Chinese grave. Their use spread through Central Asia and into Europe by the 8th century AD. The stirrup revolutionized riding and warfare. It allowed cavalry to ride further and faster, heavy cavalry and the use of lances developed, as did light cavalry and mounted archers. It was in Byzantine times when some elements like the saddle, stirrups, spurs, bits and bridles became popular and their use spread throughout Europe. This style of Stirrup most likely evolved in

SPANISH STYLE ORIGINAL BOUDOIR BED DOLL VERY GOOD CONDITION ALL ORIGINAL
Please read all of the item's description and feel free to ask questions prior to bidding. There is no Best Offer or Buy It Now available. It's nearing Spring and it's time to do some cleaning which means thinning out some of my beautiful boudoir doll collection. This one is just as I purchased it including tiny to small holes in each layer of the skirts. The right foot is where the damage is. But can't be seen when the dress is down. There's minor water damage as shown in the photo. Her hair is marvelous and fitted out with velvet flowers. She's even wearing a small bracelet on her left hand. The fingernails are done in a pale pink and on her right hand, the little finger is broken off. Her outfit is quite unique. Especially around the front of the neckline. She's been treated gently over the years. Her neck is ... morea bit soft and leans toward the back, but I kept her on a doll stand near the back of a shelf and she looks perfect where I've placed her. The doll stand doesn't come with the doll. She's 29" tall from feet to the top of the rose in her hair. It's a shame I can only list with 12 photos. Under her skirt is a large, light weight cardboard card sewn into the fabric(so I can't see what all it says) and it's marked EL ES? 15 Vistas. I don't have any idea what this means. I purchased this sometime back and it may have been in the home of a smoker. I can't be sure. I've never collected them for their value. But rather bought the ones I thought were unusual and beautiful. She's ready to ship for free with insurance.

Kit Kapp Collection Kuna Mola 1960s: Angels
Ankel(Angels) Mola collected by Kit Kapp. A simple color pallet actually adds to the attraction of this piece. It shows four angels with odd. Hooded heads- flanking four abstract figures of humans who are kneeling and praying. The angels have a freaky Hannibal Lecter feel to them. Unusual piece. This mola has been in my personal collection for some time.and originally from one of the great early collections of molas. 20" x 14" NOTE: I WILL BE TRAVELING FROM MONDAY. MARCH 17- SUNDAY MARCH 23. IF YOU WANT YOUR MOLA SHIPPED QUICKLY, YOU SHOULD PAY ON SUNDAY MARCH 16TH WHEN THE AUCTION ENDS. THANKS. A comment on pricing: I believe some of the pieces I will be listing in the next couple of weeks are far more valuable than the opening bid price- because of design. Execution, rareness and provenance. But I want to start at a low price ... moreand let the market decide how much they're worth. Good luck! The Kit Kapp Collection. Like many of the molas I sell. This on is from the collection of Kit Kapp, who mapped the San Blas Islands from 1960 to 1970, and wrote one of the first English-language books on molas. Mola Art from the San Blas Islands. Please note that by bidding on this mola. You grant me the right to use its image in the production of a book and web site on mola art. Thanks for reading.
Kit Kapp Collection Kuna Mola 1950s - 1960s: Devil Eagle
Sulup Nia(Devil Eagle) Mola collected by Kit Kapp. The imagery on this mola can be interpreted a couple of different ways. One view is that the eage(or is it a dragon? is swooping down and attacking the monkey in the lower-right corner. My interpretation is that the devil-eagle is actually a spirit rising from the monkey. Size. Style and cloth indicate this is probably a 1950s mola, though it could be early 1960s or late 1940s. Note the use of early printed cloth inserts. This mola has been in my personal collection for some time.and originally from one of the great early collections of molas. 22" x 15.5" NOTE: I WILL BE TRAVELING FROM MONDAY. Early, Damaged Kit Kapp Collection Kuna Mola: Archaic Frog Design 1940s?
Early. Damaged Noh(Frog Design) Mola collected by Kit Kapp. This wonderful. Damaged mola depicts a classic"Rastafarian Frog" one of the earliest designs known. Eleanor York Bell, who collected the earliest molas known, collected on with this design in 1908- a piece which is now lost(the Smithsonian has a photo of it, but her relatives got the mola) The ragged cutting and sewing, the early archaic design and the use of very light balanced plainweave cloth for the base layer all point to an early date. It could be anwhere from the 1930s to the 1950s. Note the frog-within-a-frog design. This mola has been in my personal collection for some time.and originally from one of the great early collections of molas. 20" x 16" NOTE: I WILL BE TRAVELING FROM MONDAY. MARCH 17- SUNDAY MARCH 23. IF YOU WANT YOUR MOLA SHIPPED QUICKLY, ... moreYOU SHOULD PAY ON SUNDAY MARCH 16TH WHEN THE AUCTION ENDS. THANKS. A comment on pricing: I believe some of the pieces I will be listing in the next couple of weeks are far more valuable than the opening bid price- because of design. Execution, rareness and provenance. But I want to start at a low price and let the market decide how much they're worth. Good luck! The Kit Kapp Collection. Like many of the molas I sell. This on is from the collection of Kit Kapp, who mapped the San Blas Islands from 1960 to 1970, and wrote one of the first English-language books on molas. Mola Art from the San Blas Islands. Kit Kapp Collection 1960s Kuna Mola: Marlin and Fishermen
Ulu Machereti Ua Tummadi(Fishermen with Large Fish) Mola collected by Kit Kapp. This is one big fish. The marlin that the Kuna men have caught is much larger than their boat! Very nice appliqued lettering spelling our"El Merlin" which I believe she meant to say"marlin" This mola has been in my personal collection for some time.and originally from one of the great early collections of molas. 17.5" x 15" NOTE: I WILL BE TRAVELING FROM MONDAY. Kit Kapp Collection 1940s-1960s Kuna Mola: Rare Eagle Design
Early Sulup(Eagle) Mola collected by Kit Kapp. This very rare mola appears to be quite early- I would say 1940s or early 1950s. The overall design is very unusual and the use of long free-standing applique strips is very. Very rare. I believe it may be a"galu" or"kalu" spirit place) mola. It depicts a large eagle, spread-winged above two other eagles- with the three birds forming a diamond-shaped space between them. The entire base layer is made of a very early printed fabric(probably 1930s or 1940s) A rare thing indeed. This mola has been in my personal collection for some time.and originally from one of the great early collections of molas. 22" x 17" A comment on pricing: I believe some of the pieces I will be listing in the next couple of weeks are far more valuable than the opening bid price- because of design. ... moreExecution, rareness and provenance. FINE ANTIQUE CLASSIC WOOL AYMARA COCOA BAG - BEAUTIFUL COLORS
We are not experts. But we think this is an antique cocoa bag produced by the Aymara Indians of Peru or Bolivia. It is certainly a lovely wool textile. The size is 20 inches wide and 18 1/2 inches high. The total length of the strap is 13 inches. The strap may be a more recent replacement. The bag opens and closes with a tie-string that goes around the top. The front is interesting: there is a central seam but has two openings, one about mid-way and the other at the top. Lovely woven designs and just the most gorgeous colors.

Shibipo Drinking Vessel, mid 20th cent.
2.5" X 6.5" thin-walled shallow bowl. Painted decoration The Shibipo are an indigenous people of the Peruvian Amazon Rainforest. Living along the Ucayali River. They still retain many of their old traditions ~ especially their form of shamanism. Living in scattered villages in the jungle forest extending from Ecuador to Brazil. The Shibipo are known for their rich and complex cosmology which translates graphically into the maze-like patterns reproduced on textiles and pottery(usually made by women) This bowl was used indigenously, not something made-to-be-sold to tourists. There is clear evidence of residue from some liquid left at the bottom of the bowl ~ it may have been used to ritually consume ayahuasca. The Shibipo hallucinogenic brew used for diagnosis, with a history over a thousand years old. The piece is in fairly good ... morecondition for its age with age appropriate wear. If purchasing from abroad. Please inquire for int'l. shipping rates. Thank-you. 0fe.RcmdId ViewItemDescV4,RlogId p4%60bo7%60jtb9%3Fuk%601d70f%2B%3E0fe-144bdc6602f-0x10b-

FOLK ART MAJOLICA INCENSARIO
Magnificent folk art majolica incensario(incense burner) from the Montiel Family Studio. In Antigua, Guatemala, circa 1900. Hand formed red terracotta earthenware(redware) A pedestal bowl with a half-dome arcade covered in perching birds–they look like doves and there’s at least 78 of them! The arch is centered with a bull’s head(and even this has a bird on it) and flanked by guards. There's a twisted rope loop at the top for hanging. On the base are three more doves. All decorated This is a charming piece of Guatemalan artisan pottery Condition: The condition of this piece is remarkable for its age. There are about four or five losses to the birds(and other losses that are glazed over so they happened before being fired) and a flake off the rim of the bowl at the front. Otherwise notably free of damage. Please refer to the photos for ... morecosmetic condition. Normal crazing throughout. No cracks or hairlines or structural problems. Some minimal repairs at the base. RcmdId ViewItemDescV4,RlogId p4%60bo7%60jtb9%3Fvo%7B%3Dd70f%2Bf54%3E-144bdc66071-0x117-

Kit Kapp Collection 1950s or 1960s Kuna Mola: Honey Bees - Great Folk Art
Very Folky Honey Bees Mola collected by Kit Kapp. Big. Colorful and lots of fun, this is a fabulous folk art textile. It depicts two puzzled-looking honey bees- look at the wonderful faces! Loads of early printed cloth- plus very large size- indicate this is 1950s or early 1960s. Cool, incomprehensible embroidered lettering on their chests. A great, fun piece. 21" x 16" A comment on pricing: I believe some of the pieces I will be listing in the next couple of weeks are far more valuable than the opening bid price- because of design. Kit Kapp Collection 1960s Kuna Mola: Rare Jungle Lion Design
Achu Barbati(Lion and Birds in Jungle) Mola collected by Kit Kapp.Very Rare Design. This is a very rare mola design. I sold the blouse-mate panel to this one about eight years ago. And I can't recall having seen another one. It focuses on a large lion beneath a tree laden with multi-colored fruit. Beneath the lion is hat looks like a piano, but is probably jungle plants. The whole scene is flanked by birds on both sides. The color pallet is extreme and daring. Outlining around the birds is very open/bold. A genuinely rare mola. 19.5" x 15" A comment on pricing: I believe some of the pieces I will be listing in the next couple of weeks are far more valuable than the opening bid price- because of design. They guaranteed its authenticity. Very Good condition. The four wheels are not the original wheels. But were recovered from the SAME site. The axels were originally of wood. Which disintegrated over time. It seems to me that a reasonable explanation of the differnt wheels is that the kids who were playing with the toys lost the wheels. This is a wonderful piece which demonstrates that the Mayans knew about the wheel. Yet never employed it in their constructions. There are Mayan glyphs on the back of the jaguar. But I don't know what they mean. It measures 6-1/2 inches. Free Shipping and Insurance within the United States. I accept only PayPal. ... morePlease note: I currently live in Mexico. Is one of the most important mola books ever written. Ann Parker and Avon Neal were a couple who teamed together to write a number of books on folk art. They made numerous trips to the San Blas Islands, starting in 1965. Their focus was on"story ... moretelling" molas, with a particular emphasis on acculturated molas that found their inspiration in western culture- magazine ads, billboards and comic books.
