The last patent date on this machine is 1923. The machine is registered as number 947580. The machine was used to place amounts on checks. It still turns and stamps. A box for the original ink rollers is still attached to the base and the original rollers are inside the machine. The machine is in good condition and not rusted or worn like others I have seen. RARE 1920's Antique Check Writer Protectograph Machine by Todd
This is an antique machine. A check writer, The Protectograph No. 30 made by the Todd Protectograph Company in Rochester NY No. e403880- circa 1913- 1933. This is a great machine and an important part of the financial history of the USA. One of the 1st machines made that protected those who had checking accounts and checks to process. Around 1910. The Todd company was commissioned by the banking industry to come up with a safe method for mass producing payroll and business checks. This particular model was built from 1913 to 1933. It embosses a design over the payees name while printing the amount and serial number of the check. This unit has been used and is a great display piece. The print lever still works and advances the ribbon. The 9" x 7" x 8" metal case has a brushed silver tone cover plate in a nice Art Deco style ... moreand is quite heav y weigh ing over 13 lbs. A fine machine for any collector of office equipment. I t has a sticker on the front with"The Todd Sales Company Check Protec tion Munsey Bldg. Baltimore MD. with a phone Plaza 0168" These machines were the mainstay of corporate America in the early part of the last century. A great period piece for display and conversation. Don't miss out on your chance to own a piece of industrial design history. The machine is in very good condition- with minor amounts of scratches from use considering it's probably 90+ years old. The machine is solid(and very heavy) metal. With a nice wooden knob on the handle and tiny glass plates(a bit discolored- but still able to see through) over the numbers at the top. The ink roller(with black and red) is still in the machine. I believe this was the machine that had to have the ink painted onto the roll when the ink supply was used up on the roll. The tabs on the front work and go up& down the face. With the appropriate numbers showing under the small glass faces at the top. The handle on the side also works perfectly. The base appears(from the scratches) to be made of coated solid brass

The item is in overall good condition. Overall dimensions: 7" x 6" x 61/2" The pictures tell it all. ANTIQUE CHECK PRINTER Old unit was produced in the 1920s by Todd Protectograph Inc. of Rochester. NY. Base measures about 5.5 x 3.5 inches, with a height over 4 inches. It weighs over 3.5 pounds. Instructions are printed on a yellowing piece of paper attached to bottom of unit. It's all pretty old and rusty looking, but I actually got it to print some characters(see pic#6) although not necessarily the ones I was trying to print! The 5 levers to the right side still move up and down(picture shows 4 but I did get the 5th to move) and the handle lever on the side still pulls down. It is old and has been well used at some point. Antique 1916 Todd Protectograph Check Writer Machine Art Deco
The last patent date was in 1916. This Protectograph Check Writer must have been manufactured after that. This is untested. But it looks complete. The high gloss black finish is in good condition with some scratches and nicks, The exposed steel hardware has a light coating of surface rust.The rubber feet are still good. There is a screw missing on top. I'll try to find one. The machine measures 16" long by 5" wide by 5" high. The serial number is 718133 found on the front of the machine. As you can imagine. The machine is heavy. Its cast iron and steel. Calculate your shipping cost.

This is a great working machine made for stamping checks so that they are not deposited for more than they are written for. This unit works perfectly. The dial on the side of the unit is Celluloid. This unit stamps and punches little pin holes so that it cannot be erased. The unit is in great condition the japanning is a little blown off on the bottom but that is just from siting. A must have for any collection or for use.

I am not sure how to use this, but it does stamp numbers in Red Ink on paper. I will say it does work. The Base is 3 1/2 inches by 5 1/2 inches and it is 5 inches tall. A nice compact size! The issues included are October 3. Oct. 24, November 14, Nov. 28, and December 12, 1914. Plus: January 2, Jan. 11, Jan. 22, February 5, Feb. 19, March 6, and March 20, 1915. Illustrated. Leather bound Book. Approximately 11 in. by 8-3/4 in. the early issues have only a few pages. But the later issues have about 20 pages.
