One side has what appears to be graphics that you would see on currency as well as denominations of 25. 100, 500, 1000. The large denomination bills of 500 and 1000 haven't been used since the 1930's. On the back you can faintly see"United States of America" I tried to capture it in picture 3 but it is very hard to see. I am no expert in this area but I am inclined to think that this could have been used to counterfeit money in the early 20th century. Vintage Tobacco Lithograph Printing Stone/ Both Label and Cigar Band
An unusual piece of Tobacciana and printing history. This stone has printmaking inscriptions on both sides. On one side is a lovely elaborate illustration of a Cuban tobacco plantation. This would have been the side used to print the label. The opposite side has a queue of five tobacco bands which were to be printed in 3 colors black. Red and gold with the word“Micona” This lovely piece of limestone measures 11 inches wide. 8 inches tall, and a robust 3” thick and bears a painted number“1733” on the side. There are fracture cracks in the stone but it remains tight and in one piece. Excellent for display or use. This limestone lithograph stone will be well-wrapped and shipped via USPS priority mail. In the early 19th century, when it was apparent Cuba was the cigar capital of the world, this is when the use of the cigar band came into play. In the early days, cigars were packed in wooden boxes or barrels with the company named inscribed on them. European cheats would simply inscribe their inferior product with Cuban markings and sell them as the real deal. In the 1830's Gustavo Bock. Who owned a factory in Cuba, was credited with the first band- a simple wrapper with his signature on it. The practice spread from Cuba to other countries and as technology improved, so did the overall elaborate detail in design, color, and foiling of the bands and labels. Not only did the bands put an end to knockoffs, it helped to advertise the Cigar companies much more effectively and set them apart from each other. 2 Sided Lithographic Antique Printing Stone Block 1937 Rock Island Railway
This sale is for a very unique one of a kind two sided carded stone printing block. One side appears to be a 1937 Chicago Rock Island and Pacific Railway co stock certificate. The other side appears to be a Merchants Distilling Corporation Bond certificate printing block. This is really unique. It is made out of a cut slab of stone. It weighs over 27 lbs. The stone measures 13"x 10" x 2" Check out the photos. One corner appears to have been repaired. The other corners show wear and damage. Keep in mind that with printing blocks. They are reversed. If you look in the photos you will see I have inverted one photo of each side to let you try to read it. Although the photos may be slightly blurry.
