Rare Old Jumbo Size Cast Iron Paper Seal Embosser Press
This auction is for a rare vintage(or antique) jumbo size cast iron paper seal embosser hand press. I believe its at least circa 1930's as the embossing die in it is for the" National Institute of Public Affairs" A federal agency that existed from 1935 to 1949. However, we are not exactly sure of the embosser's age. It's in outstanding condition, being finished in high gloss black with some gold trim. It is very solidly manufactured and seems to be in perfect working order. The embosser is jumbo size. Being 14.5 inches high, 10.5 inches long, and 3 inches wide. It dwarfs regular sized embossers. It's very heavy, weighing about 17 pounds and appears and feels to be made of cast iron. The seal presently on the embosser still works great, and presses(on paper) the name of the agency around the outside of the seal with ... morea large eagle in the middle(see photo) The pictures are of the actual press for sale. Here is a cast iron embosser from the early 1900s for the United Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way Employees and Railway Shop Laborers. Lodge 1677(or 1877) The location is possibly Hamden, but it is hard to read. I can't find out much about the union, but it appears they were active early in the 1900s into the 20s. Corporate seal embosser for GEORGE F. GETTY. INC. Incorporated in 1936 in Delaware. G.F. Getty was the son of J. Paul Getty. His company merged with TIDE WATER OIL in the 1950s, which was then taken over by parent company GETTY OIL. Embosser is cast iron with original dark green paint. Gold trim appears to have been applied by hand. The name of the manufacturer is only partially visible. As shown in the photos. The paint is nicked in spots as is expected in a vintage item that is nearly 75 years old. It is still in smooth working order. Found by a Getty employee on a shelf when Getty Oil was moving to its new headquarters in Los Angeles in the 1950s.

Embosses fine- see picture of seal on napkin. Overall great Americana antique. There are areas with paint wear. Some minimal surface marks on neck, scratches to top of upper die(actual stamp part is fine) small indent area of base on backhand side that may have been part of mold. Weighs 6.5 pounds/ 11 5/8" total height with handle in upright position/ 7 1/4" base. Including screw tabs for desk attachment. Own a piece of history!
