Antique Kelsey Excelsior 3 x 5 Inch Letterpress Printing Press + Bonus Typeset
Up for auction is a really cool antique 3 x 5 inch Excelsior printing press by Kelsey& Co. of Meriden. Connecticut. Also a set of very fancy font type in a wooden type set box. One picture illustrates how ornate the lettering is, it reminds me of calligraphy. I don't know the letter model of the press for sure so I will describe everything in detail in conjunction with the many pictures I provided. It weighs 24 pounds and is made of cast iron with a black coat of paint and some painted gold lettering as well as a couple gold designs. The base measures 11.5 inches, the entire press is roughly 20 inches long including the protruding part behind the plate and the plate diameter is 5 7/8 inches. The patent date states is was patented April, 6, 1893. The'9' digit is hard to make it and I can't be positive that t is a'9' ... morebut I believe so)Following that there are patent numbers for England, France and Germany. The pictures should include enough angles so you can see all of the hardware. The press opens and closes like it should. But the rectangle that should hold the type tilts slightly and the two rectangles aren't perfectly parallel when the handle is pressed down and they separate. However, when you close the press they eventually become flush but it doesn't make initial square contact. It appears something just needs to be tightened or adjusted(pictures 4& 5) The sections where the rollers should be pivot down over the plate when the handle is pushed down. The plate spins freely when I move it but operating the press doesn't rotate it automatically. Condition: This was stored in a barn for decades. It needs a little TLC. You can plainly see there is plenty of surface rust but the black coat of paint over the cast iron is largely intact. The rust isn't deep or pitted, just on the surface. Some of the gold lettering and detail has worn or rusted over, but again it is largely intact. Cosmetically the iron is in wonderful condition and the mechanics seem to be functioning.

Cleaned out Bindery and found this in the basement. I replaced a bolt/nut(see last picture) but other than that. All original! Cleaned it off and lubed with wd40. Showed different angles in pictures. I entered $60 as shipping as this is the most it should cost to send to either coast from my location. Beautiful Antique Kelsey& Co Excelsior Letterpress/Printing press. This is the 3X5 Tabletop Model. Wonderful. Near mint, working condition. An attic find from a local estate. Missing the rollers. Otherwise looks good. Just what you see here. I don't have the rollers or any type. If you have any questions or need more pics. Just ask. This is not a big operation with employees and a warehouse. Antique Kelsey Letterpress acquired by a family member in the early 1950's. Based on research the approximate manufacture date is estimated to be in the 1920's. Counter included and 6 pounds of type. Includes two wood framed Font/Type Boxes. Wood cases state the font are 14 point script and 85-8 point. There appears to be three different sizes of letters. Counter included. Shows some rust. K elsey Company 3 x 5 Excelsior Mercury Printing Press. Includes some type. I am out of my element here however the machine moves freely when I press it. I have pictures of both ways. It is stamped Excelsior Heridan.Conn USA March 20,1928. The pictures reflect the printing press and type in their actual condition. Please review the pictures thoroughly. What is shown in the pictures is what you will receive. As I mentioned it seems to work. There is some dirt and dust on the outside.Could use a better cleaning. This weighs with the type 33 pounds. It measures approz.12" by 17" H.

stamped"May 6. 1873" this is a very old awesome Printing Press made by Kelsey& Co, Meriden, Connecticut. It is exactly as pictured. Wood block has a break which is easy to replace. An awesome piece of mercantile history here for the money. Extremely heavy, it will be carefully packaged for safe shipping. It weighs A LOT, so shipping is limited to the contiguous United States at a rate of $42.50 east of the Mississippi and $51.20 West of the Mississippi.
