Antique Wood Block Lead Inking Printing Design. Tom Turkey. Very Intricate Design. Stationed on a wood block that measures 10x8x2 Inches. There must have been a paper advertising on the back of the block. But that has chipped and faded and shredded away with time. I decieded against cleaning off the paper remnants. Antique Hoe & Co NY Lead Type Cutter Letterpress Printing Cast Iron Pat'd 1869
This is a wonderful antique tool from the American industrial age. Made of solid cast iron by R. Hoe& Co. New York. The patent date on the handle says 1869. If you collect tools, you probably already know that R. Hoe and Co. was in business from the early 1800's until 1984, and they were very famous makers of printing presses and tools related to the printing industry. This is a manual machine for cutting lead type. We found some old lead border still in the box underneath! It works on the same principle as a paper cutter: the handle moves up and down manually, and there is a blade that cuts the metal at an angle. The angle can be changed by moving the triangular piece on top; there is a nut underneath to loosen and tighten it. Everything on this old piece seems to work great-it's pretty low tech, heavy built, without many moving ... moreparts. It was part of a local commercial printer who recently went out of business, and they had a number of antique pieces in their inventory. This item is heavy, it weighs a little more than 16 lbs before packing. Incredible craftsmanship and design. A wonderful piece of newspaper and letterpress printing history!
