This is an early 1900's self inking automatic numbering machine by bates manufacturing company in orange. NJ USA. patent dates july 1891, oct189? jan 1893. Has a five digit number stamp with three settings: Consecutive(1,2,3,4. duplicate(1,1,2,2,3,3,4,4. repeat(1,1,1,1.Each time the machine was pressed down onto a sheet of paper, a rotating wheel was moved incrementally depending on setting(consecutive,duplicate,repeat) Overall machine is in good working condition although ink pad needs to be replaced or recharged not sure. The Bates Automatic Numbering-Machine or Bates stamper is named after the late 19th century inventor Edwin G. Bates of New York City. He obtained several United States patents for the device from 1891 to 1901 and the patents were assigned to the Bates Manufacturing Company. Bates numbering is commonly used as an organizational ... moremethod to label and identify legal documents. Nearly all American law firms use Bates stamps. SPECIAL, serial# E605425 Can be set to stamp consecutive. Repeat or duplicate. Wonderful condition. This shows very little use as can be seen. The number wheels are nearly all clean of ink. The handle is unblemished brown bakelite. The frame is brown crinkle paint also in EXCELLENT condition. One very small nick. I'm assuming the fact that the sixth wheel on this unit contains LETTERS is why this is marked as"SPECIAL" The 10 letter positions on the lest wheel are as follows: G. F, H, I, J, K, L, M, N, O. Antique Bates automatic numbering machine. Very early make of this popular stamper. Latest patent date listed on piece is from January 10. 1893. This is in very good working condition, dials seem to be turning well& work properly in the 3 settings. Would need a new ink pad if wanting to use this though. Bates Automatic Numbering Machine. It can be set to repeat the same 5 digit number over and over. Or to sequentially number from 00000 to 99999. Mechanically, it is in working condition. It sticks a little and could probably use some oil if you really intend to use it for anything other than a decorative piece. Also, the ink pad is dry from age, so it would need to be replaced or refilled somehow. Measures about 6.5" tall and the base is about 1.75" x 2.5" Condition is as seen in photos.
