Boil it on the wood burning stove, then carry it to the bathroom& put into the bottoms of shaving/scuttle mugs. Hard soap was placed on top of the mugs, the excess water drained through the holes into the base. Excess water was poured out through the scuttle mouth. A shaving brush was dipped into the hot water& then the brush was rubbed against the soap creating a hot lather for shaving. The scuttle mug being sold here has a garden scene with pink& white flowers on the front. There is embossed Victorian scrolling on both sides. There is gilding on the edges but much of it has worn off. The garden scene is in very good condition. There are no cracks or crazing in the porcelain. There are 3 tiny chips on the inner lip of the scuttle mouth where shaving brushes were dipped into the water. The mug is not marked. It measures approximately 6" 15.2 cm) wide& 4" 10.1 cm) tall. This is an Antique Porcelain Shaving Mug. Made by Brandenburg Pottery Co. It has the divider with several holes so the soapy water will drain while the Gentleman is shaving. It is a lovely crisp white, soft blues, pink and white floral designs, gold design at the base, and a portrait of a NATIVE AMERICAN BRAVE. Very unique. In great Antique Condition, no chips, no cracks, no repairs. Tiny bit of wear on the bottom where it has been sitting on a shelf. It is 4" Deep and a little over 3.5"W. It is a beautiful Limoges hand painted cup. Possibly a shaving mug, with roses and gold trimmed rim and handle. Signed on the bottom T&Y Limoges France. The porcelain is so sheer you can almost see right through it. The painted roses are so delicate and beautifully done. They are not signed so we can’t say who the artist was. It measures about 3.25” tall x 3” in diameter. Not counting the handle. It is in very good condition with some wear to the gold on the rim and handle. There is a spider web mark on the bottom but it does appear to be perhaps only a stain on the crazing on the glaze as there is no sign from inside the cup. There is a small pit mark right there so it looks like it was just dirt that seeped in during it’s long lifetime. This wonderful mug would be great addition to any French Limoges antique pottery ceramic home decor accessories collection. This wonderful shaving mug was decorated by August Kern Barber Supply. St. Louis per the fired stamp on the underside. It originally belonged to J. W. Banfield who was obviously quite the billiards player. This mug has a lot of fine detail. The gilding on the upper and lower rims. The name and decorating is all original bright gold. There is some wear from use where his thumb rested at the top of the handle and rim as is expected from a vintage treasure like this. Offered in this auction are two antique mugs. One is a mustache mug with the mouth piece to protect the gentleman's mustache when drinking. Both are signed Germany on the bottom. These are both in very good condition. The one shaving mug with flowers does have a small spider hairline on the bottom and a flaw to the handle. I try to show you this in my photos. The other mustache mug does have some minor fading to the color. Which you should be able to see. If you collect these, you will know that you would expect to pay much more than my opening bid for just the one mustache mug. However, I am trying to clean out my cabinets so hope to pass along to another collector! Antique Gentleman's Shaving mug - D.E. McNicol China - Clarksburg W. Va.
This heavy china or porcelain shaving mug has an iridescent pink border and an American Robin sitting on a branch on one side( transfer pattern) the back is plain; on the bottom of the mug is says D.E. McNicol Clarksburg W. VA. West Virginia. It looks pretty old. Maybe late 1800's/ early 1900's to 1920's; sometimes men left these in the barber shop to use when they came in for a shave and a haircut. It has no chips or cracks; the glaze is kind of heavy on it but this is how it was originally from the kiln.
