Stoneware which has had salt thrown in the kiln at a very high temperature. The volatized salt combines with the mineral elements of the clay leaving a thin coating. The end result leaves an outer layer with the minute"orange peel" pitting that is a characteristic of English Salt Glaze. While the technique dates sto the 15th Century in Germany, it was not until the late 17th Century that the potters of Staffordshire in England began producing it in any quantity. Salt Glaze was produced with various ... morefinishes; plain white, enameled and printed. Examples of all of these are in our inventory including"scratch blue" which has a relatively brief popularity. SEE ADDITIONAL PHOTOS AT BOTTOM OF PAGE* GENUINE Antique 18th Century English Salt Glaze Stoneware Mug Tankard This is a wonderful 18th century English salt glazed stoneware mug with an applied molded scene of five standing figures on a naturalistically modeled tree trunk forming the main body of the mug. Complete with knots, the handle in the form of a branch with a knot thumb piece. It’s decorated with blue and a medium brown on the outside with the inside done in a rich chocolate brown. There are some firing cracks from the manufacturing process where the figures on the front(which were molded separately. Then applied to the surface before firing) join with the main body of the mug. There are similar firing cracks where the handle attaches. These are not damages; it’s ... morejust part of the manufacturing. There are no chips or cracks, so overall it’s in very good shape. The figures most likely represent a known historical or literary scene but I haven’t researched it enough to know for sure. It measures about 4 ½ inches tall and about 3 to 3 1/4 inches across the mouth(which is a bit oblong. Not perfectly round, hence the varied measurement) Including the handle, the overall width is about 5 ¼ inches. The best way to describe this wonderful piece is with lots of photos. c1840 Antique English Staffordshire Child Mug Cup Boys Playing Marbles Cricket
This antique childs mug measures 2 3/4" tall and 2 5/8" across the top. It has a hairline crack. Mostly visible on the inside of the mug. It is visible on the outside just above the shoulder of the second boy from the left playing marbles. It has some brown stained crazing( age lines in the glaze) which looks really worse than it actually is because of the strong light and very close up photos. It looks as if it has a crack on the handle. But it does not go all the way around. There is a teeny line on the"Cricket" side top edge and a pinpoint nip along the rim. The"indent" on the base is not a chip. It has glaze over top and was done in the making. There is a little chip on the rim around the cup at the base as shown. ANTIQUE POTTERY - ENGLISH "FROG" PORTER MUG
Antique English Porter Mug with a spotted. Red eyed frog sitting on the bottom in the mug looking up at you. The mug is ornately decorated with 2 different scenes of country children picking fruit from a tree and dancing. The mug is decorated on the handle and on the inside at the upper border with a floral trim. The mug measures 4 1/4" high 3 3/4" in diameter at the opening with a 4 1/8" diameter base. It is 5 1/2" long. The mug has age crazing but no chips, cracks or damage. Being an antique it does show the normal signs of age and use. This is a very nice conversational collectible.

This jug has gilded accents and except for an overall crazing to the glaze, it is in all original condition with no restorations. Up next is a 9 ½” tall jug that depicts an Old Woman. This jug has some light wear to the cold painted surface and in our close ups you can see a defect to the pottery, which happened during the making. There are no other problems or any restoration. Offered is an antique soft paste mug with a transfer image of an English Springer Spaniel. This mug measures 3" tall with a 3 1/4" opening& a full 4 1/2" wide including the handle. It has a glazed cream body with a black and white dog posing with an autumn background& has a narrow gold trim just under the lip of the mug. It is embossed with"USA" on the base. It is in excellent condition with no chips or cracks& just slight crazing and discoloration on the bottom ring which is unglazed& noticeable seams at the applied handle. A very beautiful mug!
