Antique English Salt Glaze StonewareTankard c1760 polychrome enamel decoration
Antique English Salt Glaze polychrome enamel decorated stoneware tankard with reeded handle and well formed kick. Rare large size. c1760. CONDITION: Hairline secured on body. Some staining on the rim due to wear. Measurements: 6 3/4" tall A little background on English Salt Glaze: Salt Glaze pottery is exactly what the name implies. Stoneware which has had salt thrown in the kiln at a very high temperature. The volatized salt combines with the mineral elements of the clay leaving a thin coating. The end result leaves an outer layer with the minute"orange peel" pitting that is a characteristic of English Salt Glaze. While the technique dates sto the 15th Century in Germany, it was not until the late 17th Century that the potters of Staffordshire in England began producing it in any quantity. Salt Glaze was produced with various ... morefinishes; plain white, enameled and printed. Examples of all of these are in our inventory including"scratch blue" which has a relatively brief popularity. While Salt Glaze continued to be produced, the the mid 18th Century it was supplanted in the public affection by Creamware. Please don't hesitate to let us know if you have any questions. And. Rare Early Large Mush Cup English Flo Blue Transferware Chinoiserie Pattern
Very scarce in this form and a very good Chinoiserie pattern as well. C. early 1800's. I'm calling this a mush cup but maybe it is known as something else? Don't know the name of the pattern. Measures: 5 1/4 in. tall-5 1/4 in.diameter. Condition: It has old repairs(I got it like this) which can be seen by the discoloration of the material used. The areas where this is found are around the top rim on the outside only. The inside of the rim does not show any problem. The bottom rim also has the same old repair as well as one side of the handle. My best guess is that there was some flaking as it does not go through. Crazing and cracking on the bottom as shown. When knocked. It rings true. CA. RESIDENTS ADD 8.5% SALES TAX. PAYMENT MUST BE RECEIVED WITHIN 4 DAYS OF CLOSING THANK YOU FOR YOURE INTEREST IN THIS ITEM. c1820 Child's Staffordshire Transferware Mug "The Higgler", Hand Colored,English
This is a Staffordshire child's mug from about 1820. It is titled"The Higgler" which means peddler or haggler. These little mugs were often made to teach children and have transfer patterns which have been hand colored. This one has remnants of what was probably originally a yellow rim. It has some stains on the inside but is overall in very good condition with no cracks. Chips or damage. It is 2& 3/4" tall. There is a wonderful collection of these old mugs in the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. ka.RcmdId ViewItemDescV4,RlogId p4%60bo7%60jtb9%3Fuk%601d72f%2Bjw%60%60wk6%3Eka-13e94598a9f-0xff-
GENUINE Antique 18th Century English Salt Glaze Stoneware Mug Tankard with Scene
SEE ADDITIONAL PHOTOS AT BOTTOM OF PAGE* GENUINE Antique 18th Century English Salt Glaze Stoneware Mug Tankard This is a wonderful 18th century English salt glazed stoneware mug with an applied molded scene of five standing figures on a naturalistically modeled tree trunk forming the main body of the mug. Complete with knots, the handle in the form of a branch with a knot thumb piece. It’s decorated with blue and a medium brown on the outside with the inside done in a rich chocolate brown. There are some firing cracks from the manufacturing process where the figures on the front(which were molded separately. Then applied to the surface before firing) join with the main body of the mug. There are similar firing cracks where the handle attaches. These are not damages; it’s ... morejust part of the manufacturing. There are no chips or cracks, so overall it’s in very good shape. The figures most likely represent a known historical or literary scene but I haven’t researched it enough to know for sure. It measures about 4 ½ inches tall and about 3 to 3 1/4 inches across the mouth(which is a bit oblong. Not perfectly round, hence the varied measurement) Including the handle, the overall width is about 5 ¼ inches. The best way to describe this wonderful piece is with lots of photos. So please look carefully at all the images at the bottom of this page to see the item’s condition. If you have any questions, I’ll be happy to answer! It is from a smoke free home. PLEASE READ: Payment must be received within 4 days of end of auction. Shipping will be combined when appropriate: when packing together will not potentially cause damage or will not require a larger box(new post office rates greatly affect postage cost on boxes over 1 cubic foot) I can usually only combine shipping if

English Creamware Child's Mug Circa 1850 Hand Painted Gold Gilt Bands & Sprigs
An early creamware child's mug that is hand painted with gilt bands and floral sprigs. There are no marks but I think it was made around 1850 in the Staffordshire region of England. CHILDREN'S MUGS of the 19th century are interesting to present-day collectors. There are many types of mugs. From those with cheap transfer prints and rhymes and jingles, which are collected as a relic of a passing day rather than for any beauty they may possess, to the fine early decorated creamware mugs of Leeds, Bristol, and Liverpool, as well as a variety in lusterware. The subject matter ranges from early scenes to those of the Kate Greenaway period. ... moreOf the twelve hundred mugs in the collection of Margaret H. Jewell, which is on display at the Harrison Gray Otis House in Boston, there is hardly a duplicate and there are enough mugs of each type to make the study of the subject complete. Among the earliest types of children's mugs are the creamware mugs decorated with bands of blue. Brown, tan, olive green or gilt. Buyer pays $9.80 shipping in the continental U.S.A. c1840 RARE English Masonic Masons Coffee Can, Symbols, Hand Painted, Large Mug
This is a very old large mug or tankard. Or maybe even a coffee can. It has a series of what I believe to be Masonic symbols around the central scene. The center has color added by hand to the orange transfer print. It could be as early as 1820 and is certainly English. It is 3" tall and 3& 1/4" across the top. It has a crowfoot crack on the inside where the handle joins the cup and a tight hairline about half way around. There are no marks on the bottom as to who made the piece. I think that it may be a rare piece of Masonic history!

Toby Jugs-English & Bennington Rockingham
A Toby Jug- also sometimes known as a Fillpot(or Philpot) is a pottery jug in the form of a seated person. Or the head of a recognizable person(often an English king) Typically the seated figure is a heavy-set, jovial man holding a mug of beer in one hand and a pipe of tobacco in the other and wearing 18th century attire: a long coat and atricorn hat. The tricorn hat forms a pouring spout, often with a removable lid, and a handle is attached at the rear. Jugs depicting just the head and shoulders of a figure are also referred to as Toby Jugs, although these should strictly be called"Character Jugs" The original Toby Jug. With a brown salt glaze, was developed and popularised by Staffordshire potters in the 1760s. It is thought to be a development of similar Delft jugs that were produced in the Netherlands. Similar designs were produced ... moreby other potteries, first in Staffordshire, then around England, and eventually in other countries. There are competing theories for the origin of the name"Toby Jug" It was named after the character of Sir Toby Belch in Shakespeare's play, Twelfth Night. He was an intoxicated, jovial man. It was named after a notorious 18th century Yorkshire drinker, Henry Elwes, who was known as"Toby Fillpot" or Philpot) It was inspired by an old English drinking song, The Brown Jug" which paid tribute to Toby Fillpot; the popular verses were first published in 1761.Two Antique Toby Jugs in Execellent Condition First Jug is is 7" Tall.
