Up for auction is this exceptional 19C Walnut and gesso mirror. This is truly a rare find. Mirror measures a large 56 5/8" l x 33 3/8" h x 2" d. It has a three panel wood back. We put a sturdy wire across the back to hang. Of course. This mirror could be mounted either vertical or horizontal. Just an exquisite design with oak leaves and acorns. A stately work of art. Beautiful attention to delicate detail. A rich appearance while being understated. So many large mirrors I have found are either too plain or tend to be- well- a bit garish! This is a nice balance of beauty and great workmanship. As it dates to the 19C, it is not perfect and should not be. There is some cracking in the gesso and a little professional restoration during its lifetime, so please look at the pictures carefully. This ca. 1845-1860 walnut on pine veneer frame is topped by deeply carved solid walnut crest and measures 38 ½” x 21 3/8” with 28 ¼” x 16 ½” reveal. It is constructed of 1 ½” thick wood and the entire frame appears to retain its original finish under a later coat of varnish. There are mounting holes on the side of the frame and you will note minor shrinkage cracks in the stable veneer which has no obvious loss. This is a nice antique solid wood framed wall mirror with carved floral accents on the crest and upper corners. And a wide bevel all the way around the mirror. The mirror is sturdy, solid, and heavy. The wood is walnut or oak with a very dark slightly glossy finish, the finish is probably not original, but is in good condition with some scuffs, scratches, and minor chipping, mainly along corners and edges. The glass looks very good, but there are a few areas of light spottiness in the silver. Images are crystal clear throughout. The lines that appear on the glass in the photos are a reflection and are not actually visible on the glass. There is a wooden panel over the back and the hanging wire is intact. Lovely Unique Walnut & Ceramic Over Wood Guilt Gesso Frame Beveled Edge Mirror
This auction is for an older and very unique framed beveled edge mirror from England. The frame on this mirror is possibly the mosts unique and beautiful frame on a mirror I have ever seen. The inside portion of the frame. Next to the mirror is Dark Burled Walnut, the outside edge/border has many names. It looks like beautiful carved wood, but it's a ceramic type material over wood. Some people call it, a Gesso type, some a chalk frame type, some ceramic over wood, I call it Beautiful. This is a true wall mirror, it did not come off a dresser. This mirror looks to me like it has a piece id beveled etched glass over the actual mirror. It's quite a bit heavier than you would think for it's size. The auctioneer referred to it as a"Gypsy Mirror" It has etchings and mirrored dots on it. One thing for sure, it's one attention ... moregrabbing mirror. The clarity is good for it's age. It has some small dark spots on the silvering and it does have some scratches on the beveled glass over the mirror. This is an older mirror, more than likely 80 to 90 years old or older and for it's age& travels it's in good overall condition but it is not Perfect.
