Antique Federal Style Gilded Carved Eagle Convex Mirror The frame is 35" x 26" x 3" And the mirror is 18" During the"Federal Period" of the United States. Citizens were patriotic and showed it. The Eagle frame with a convex mirror was extremely popular. Historically, these mirrors have 13 cannon balls to represent the original 13 colonies. The eagle grasps tobacco leaves in its talons, signifying the most valuable trade amenity. Why a convex or(what is often called) a bulls-eye mirror? These mirrors were often hung in the dining room. The shape of the mirror allows homeowners and staff an overall view and a great way to see if anyone is stealing the silverware. Over the years. The paper on the back of the mirror has virtually disappeared. Now, you can see how the mirror is held in place with wood pieces, rather ... morethan a modern type of holding implement. This is a lovely vintage/antique Federal style bullseye convex matte gold gilt hanging mirror. About 50-60 years old. It is impressive in size and design, measuring 31" high x 22-1/4" wide. The mirror itself is 17-1/4" in diameter. It is carved wood and gesso. There are some age cracks in the carving; no breaks or chips. The mirror is in nice condition with minor oxidation. This listing is for a vintage smaller size Federal style convex mirror with an eagle crest. It is an old piece. But not actual Federal Period} The mirror is encased in a wood carved frame with a carved eagle crest at the top set on wreath style leaves that conform to the curve of the frame. The leave motif is repeated at the bottom of the frame. This mirror stands 23 1/2" high by 15 5/8" in diameter. The frame is 1 1/4" thick. The eagle has a wing spread of 13, and the overall weight is 4.9 pounds. CONDITION: There is slight chipping in some areas around the outer edge of the frame. And on the rear of the frame on the mid right side. There is age crackling to the gold paint and paint loss ... moreon each of the ball decorations. A repaint would solve each of these issues. The mirror itself is a little loose and probably should be reset. There are no cracks to the mirror but there is one area of age clouding or mirror surface loss on the lower right side of the mirror. See the last two photographs. Very unique Federal mirror. This one is darker than most for sale with shades of black and gold. It is on the smaller side at 18 1/2" x 10 1/2" It has an oversized eagle on top. Perfect for any room. A nice size for fitting a tight space like a hallway. Porthole shape makes it nice for nautical decor as well. Make is unknown. May be Syroco. It likely dates to the 1950s.
