It has ... moreglass on both sides. On the front, I believe is St. Anthony holding the Christ child in his left arm. In his right hand he holds three branches. On the reverse, a shroud is depicted. Above the shroud is a thorny crown and the the right is a ladder. When I used a flash inside, a face appeared in the middle of the black area at the center of the shroud or drapery. See 3rd photograph. Both sides appear to be painted on glass or some other hard material. The painting of the shroud on the reverse has a crack running down the middle, in addition to the other damage. The piece weighs 3 ounces or 84 grams. Please study the photographs before bidding. Antique Old World Spanish Colonial Painted Gilt Cherub Mirror w/ Candlesticks This is a gorgeous. Antique Spanish Colonial Revival mirror with good color and baroque charm. The mirror is circa 1930's. It is made of gesso and painted cadet blue with gilt accenting on the borders and scrolling. The use of plaster, color, and baroque lines are attributes of this era. The mirror inside is the old"aged" type with gold specks in it. It works very well with the frame. This special mirror has a removable candle stick holder which further enhances this beauty to great effect. The removable candlestick offers design versatility and also comes in handy when placing candles in the holder. I had to taper down the bottoms of the candles I had on hand so it was nice to be able to do this over the sink and fit in the holder away from the mirror. ... moreSee last picture for what the mirror looks like without the candlestick holder. I tried both gold and cream candles with excellent results. The lit candles provide a warm and inviting ambiance reflected in the mirror. The framed mirror measures 31" High by 16 3/4" Wide by 1 5/8" Depth. The mirror itself measures 15 1/2" High by 6 3/8" across. The mirror was loose inside and the back of the mirror's frame needed new paper backing. I took it to my framer's to fit the glass properly and snugly into place then had them repaper the back. There is a strong original wire attached to the top of back for hanging. The mirror is in great condition and appears to be original as it looks so good with the frame. It could have been replaced at some point. But if it was, it was done right. It is the type of aged glass which was popular in the mid century and earlier. The paint finish and gilt coverage is very good with only a few small areas missing gilt. Not a big deal. The gilt has dark spots within the finish throughout which gives it dimension and warmth.
