Crafted in the Louis XVI taste during the first quarter of the 20th Century is a classic example of the very successful design. Of diminutive proportions. It is more of an oversized bergere arm chair than a true loveseat. The width ideal for lounging casually with a good book in a comfortable setting. The crest is a perfect arch, sharply angled at each corner to form the squared back- this balance of tight lines with soft flowing form was a difficult harmony to achieve, conforming to the clean form important to Neoclassical designs while still being warm and inviting. This piece captures it perfectly, the arched crest mirrored in the projecting bowed apron and the soft cyma-curve of the arms and arm supports. These details giving shape and depth to an otherwise austere adherence to the square. Crisp carved details bring elegance to specific elements of this fine sofa: the acanthus carved arm supports or reeded and curled handholds. The fine deep molding of the frame with gilt highlights over a mellow green ground, and the deep rosette carvings on each knee. The arms are fully upholstered, these flanking a deep and incredibly comfortable down-stuffed cushion, creating ultimate support and sleepy comfort in the overall loveseat design. It is a pleasure to relax in this piece. But it is also just an outstanding work for formal sitting areas where family can gather to socialize in classy decor that is incredibly comfortable. It is in the style of Louis XVI with elaborate decorations including a particularly impressive crest. The frame is a wood base with the fine decorations added in gesso and all finished in gilding. The frame is in excellent refinished condition. The gesso is in excellent condition with no repairs of any significance. The gilding is somewhat patinated but very likely redone sometime in the past 50 years. The glass is undamaged and the silvering in excellent condition and probably not original. A very fine antique. Circa 1900- 1930, Louis XVI style cast iron wall mirror with gilt finish and polychrome accents. Frame hangs by the handle of the basket finial. It measures 11-3/4" tall by 6-3/4" wide, the mirror 9" by 6" Excellent condition: iron with the original finish, mirror glass without chips or cracks- pale backing steaks. The mirror backing is heavy paper, which has chipped. We suggest replacing the paper with a sturdy material, the six securing rods to hold mirror in place are present.
