Description A FINE ANTIQUE FRENCH CHAMPLEVE ENAMEL& BRONZE OVAL TABLE MIRROR. Dating from the late Nineteenth Century Standing on an easel-back strut. It measures 12" x 7.5" It also has an original hanging ring to the rear if you wish to the utilise it as a hanging wall mirror. For it's size. It is quite heavy ~ weighing 1.5kgs The frame has beautiful Champleve enamel decoration on a French blue ground. And is finished with elaborate ribboned floral decoration to the top and bottom. I think the frame and decoration is made from bronze, possibly originally gilted. The frame and all the embellishments are in very good condition, with no damages. Chippendale style 38" x 20" mirror(including frame) mirror itself is approx. 26" x 18" believed to be turn-of-century and no newer than 1920s(based on style, back-board, hooks, etc. and remaining in fine cond. Unseen back is not as"fine, but OK. If I had to take an uneducated guess, I say the wood is possibly walnut. With mirror, it weighs 13.4 lbs. so this supports the walnut premise to some extent. Exquisite Antique Figural Woman Hand Mirror~Portrait on Glass~Fine Detail~
This is just a stunningly beautiful antique hand mirror found at an estate sale. The metal looks to be brass. But not sure, and is heavily engraved on the handle, and even the edge of the mirror. I'm not sure what to call the woman's portrait. The black part is all glass, and it is completely smooth where her figure is, so I do not know the correct term for how the image is displayed. The total length of the mirror is 12 3/4" The widest part of the mirror is 4" The front of the mirror is beveled, and has some little scratches and some silvering to the mirror. The side with the woman has some little scratches. There is one tiny part to the left of her that almost looks like a tiny silvering also? The metal has some tarnish/oxidization to it. The long handle part is loose, and will spin around. Also possible that the handle ... morecould be slightly warped. I don't see a maker's mark anywhere on this. I purchased this beautiful extremely fine needlepoint hand mirror while living in London. England in 1996 at a fine antique store. I was told it was rare and a very good example of its type of the period. I cannot find the receipt with the date of origin. It has had a plastic cover over it. And it removed it to photograph it. It is in very good condition, and there is only some slight discoloration(that might be able to be removed depending on the cleaner you use, I was afraid to attempt it) on the face of the fabric, where the plastic did not cover the entire fabric. Each mirror has a tall oval glass set in an oval frame with stylized leafage and flowers at the center of each vertical side. Mirrors in China were made from metal alloys, a mixture of tin and copper called speculum metal that could be highly polished to make a reflective surface as well as mirrors made of polished bronze. In China, artisans began making mirrors with the use of silver-mercury amalgams as early as 500 A.D. However. It was only during the early Renaissance, when European manufacturers perfected a superior method of coating glass with a tin-mercury amalgam, and later during the 19thcentury, silvered-glass, which became the basis of the modern glass mirror. This superb late Qing Dynasty Chinese mirror features a beautifully hand-carved elm wood frame with rabbit motif, and ... morean exquisite beveled mirror. The rabbit symbolizes longevity because of the Taoist(Daoist) legend of the"moon hare" that lives on the moon making the elixir of immortality. N ot only have beveled glass mirrors become a standard choice for most of today's interior designers who utilize the effects in creative ways to optimize the use of light within a room setting- but some of the most famous mirrors in history are beveled. Such as those that came from France during the late seventeenth century. When King Louis XIV commissioned his famous Hall of Mirrors at the Palace of Versailles in 1678. It has a reverse painted tablet on top with a large house on a hill by the sea. There are sailboats with sails down just outside the home and the painting is surrounded by a white ground. The mirror has twisted columns and molded top and the gilding is spectacular! It measures 31 1/2" tall by 19 1/4" wide at the top. It is in very good condition but I believe the mirror is replaces as well as the original wood backboard which is now a fibered board. Fine American Federal Giltwood and Eglomise Panel Antique Mirror, Mass. c. 1810
AMERICAN FEDERAL GILTWOOD EGLOMISE ANTIQUE PIER MIRROR Probably Massachusetts c. 1810 Item# 502GXQ22 A fine work that almost certainly was produced along the North Shore of Massachusetts. The form is elegant and perfectly conforming with the distinctly neoclassical tastes of America during the first years of the 19th century. This form of pier mirror was crafted extensively in both New York City and Massachusetts during this period, primarily Boston and Salem. The crest projects boldly over the mirror with a series of round droplets affixed on wire through the top of the mirror. Above the triple reeded corinthian columns flanking the mirror are wonderful carved acanthus, draping along the curved molding that flanks a carved and gilded panel of a single rose with outflowing foliage. The present example closely relates to a pair of mirrors ... moreheld in the Mabel Brady Garvan Collection(Barquist, f. 182) the acanthus carvings on this mirror clearly being more bold and executed with greater confidence. A reverse painted tablet featuring a Greco-Roman classical scene rests above the old glass of the mirror. We have not removed the backboards to more closely examine the glass. As the backboards appear to be undisturbed; however, it does appear to be a period glass and correct for the piece. The square blocks of the lower corners and rectangular blocks of the upper corners are divided diagonally with panels of light and dark gilding. This very fine acquisition remains preserved in excellent condition- it will be a wonderful addition to any collection of Federal taste. It is of the highest quality. The piece measures 13.5" tall x 17" wide when extended. amd the mirror is 6" x 4.25" There is a tight 3" age crack to the left side. Just above the shelf.
