I have an antique sunburst mirror listed as well that is equally or more impressive but both speak for themselves. This is approximately 2 feet across and up and down at widest points. The“sunburst” mirror was attributed to King Louis XIV of France, who history refers to as the self-styled“Sun King” King Louis XIV chose the“Sun” as his iconic emblem, due to his intense love of the sun and its powerful rays. Round convex mirrors called Oeil de Sorcière(French for"sorcerer's eye" were a popular luxury item from the 15th century onwards. Shown in many depictions of interiors from that time. So having said that. I'm proud to offer my antique gilt sunburst convex mirror. A true antique not a reproduction. Hanging for as long as I can remember and now in need of some restoration and minimal repairs. Very fragile! Large! This mirror has adorn many walls in its time and perhaps dating back to the 1700s. American Federal Giltwood Round Mirror with Convex Glass, Early 19th Century
AMERICAN FEDERAL CIRCULAR MIRROR WITH CONVEX GLASS Early 19th Century Item# 502EOB22 For anyone passionate about the Federal Period. This is an affordable and very striking work of the period. The deeply molded frame is embellished with large carved wooden beads, these also covered in the same thin layer of gesso employed on the entire surface prior to gilding. Clearly the mirror has seen it's fair share of history and active use, the surface having been overpainted at some point to refresh the gilding, this now also seeing loss- however, it somehow ends up only being more endearing with the craquelure and discolorations. As a small piece, it's somewhat"shabby" nature is isolated and attractively juxtaposes furnishings of a more clean finish. It is a wonderful way to add period character and charm to a formal room, particularly ... morefor the Classical or Federal decorated home. Measurements: 19 3/8" diameter x 3 3/8" depth Condition Report: Surface overpainted in gold. Extensively flaking and chipped with significant loss. The result is actually quite nice depending on your taste. One ball decoration with significant paint loss. Glass replaced. Back not removed for examination. A very attractive decorative piece- due to the flaky nature of the paint, expect some minor loss from handling during shipment.
