Notice in pics 5& 6, that on the front top of the grate, there is a sliver of cast iron that appears to be either missing or it was cast that way, I'm not sure, however, its difficult to see and does not take away from the integrity of the item and it does NOT affect its use. Great find for a Mid Century Modern enthusiast. Vintage 1950's to 1960's low Cast Iron metal If I was using this piece. I would use it for a magazine or newpaper rack. However, it is so low, that I think it was originally a Mid Century Modern log holder/ rack for the fireplace. I believe that the top portion would hold the logs/ wood and that the lower section would hold newspaper for tinder needed to start the fire. 6.5 ft Log Fireplace Mantle Persimmon American Ebony Wood Very Rare
Please see all pics. This is an amazing piece of nature. We have never seen another thing like it. First. The tree limbs were cut off at some point and the tree healed and lived which gives it the unique knots. Then it was taken over by worms and still lived which gives the absolutely beautiful texture. It also has the much sought after"pimples" that make it even more unique! But then it was cut down to be made into a railroad tie and the sawmill discarded it into a burn pile thinking it was too small. That's where we came in. We love to go to sawmills in the area looking for gems hidden in huge burn piles. John spotted this right away and brought it home last fall and has hand sanded it to perfection for ten months now. He has hundreds of hours in this piece and it shows. The consecutive cut boards shown in one of the pics ... morecome with it so you can build around your fireplace with them or build a matching shelf. It measures 79.5 ft long. And is approx 9"wide, more in some spots. This piece is not for everyone. If I had a house worthy of displaying it it wouldn't be for sale. We hope it finds the perfect home. Selling a stunning Antique Cast Iron Fireplace Basket Grate Coal Box Wood Log Holder from the late 19th century. Measures roughly 18" tall x 24" wide x 13" deep. Features a beautiful Fleur-de-lis/lily motif. There is a door/flap on the bottom that is able to tilt and allows you to dump the coals or ashes. The back is stamped 1505-24. The sides stamped 1505L and 1505R, face is stamped 1505, the bottom is stamped 24 and the door/flap is stamped 230. In Good Used Condition, shows appropriate wear for it's age.
