I am selling them just as I found them. I think they are perfect, they have been polished and blackened and if required would polish or blacken further. They are good solid condition with each one weighing approx 2.5 kgs. A wonderful piece of antique France that would enhance any fireplace. RARE ANTIQUE PAIR ANDIRONS CAST IRON FIREPLACE FRENCH BULLDOGS GREEN GLASS EYES
This auction is for a pair of rare antique Andirons cast iron fireplace dogs. I think these dogs are either French Bulldogs or Boston Terrier Bulldogs. There are some letters embossed on the back of each dog. But I can't make them out. I think it stands for Liberty Foy Labrador. Each dog has original green glass eyes. one of the eyes has a little rust stain on it. As far as I can see, the eyes don't have any chips. There are no chips, cracks, or repairs to the cast iron. There is light surface rust on them. I took some pictures with the flash and some without. These are a darker brown color. Each one stands 17 inches high by 7 inches wide. The original back brackets that would have held the logs are not there. I made brackets to hold the dogs up, so they could stand by themselves. Sold as is. I have for auction this sensationally opulent pair of genuine Napoléon 111 bronze Andirons. They date to C1870s, they are actually Andiron fronts, because the L shaped back supports are missing, these would have been made of iron, because they would have be closest to the open fire, I do not see this as a great problem, they can be easilly replaced and it will certainly have reduced the shipping cost dramatically for you. I have not cleaned the bronze, it is exactly as they were found on the antique market here in the South of France, I understand that some dealers do not like their metalware cleaned, so I have left them with their original wonderful patina and as we say here in France"dans son jus" in their original state, but with cleaning, I imagine they will become much brighter, the choice is yours! This pair of andirons made in France. Circa 1800 is in the Empire style. Crafted from cast bronze elements that have been either patinated or mercury gilded with matte and burnished gilding all original. The form consists of a pair of cast bronze pedestals surmounted by a guilded urn. The pedestals are decorated at with“deuce” of decorative fish. All these elements each cast separately for detail and drama. Empire is an early 19th century style of architecture and furniture design during the rule of France by Napoleon I(1769- 1821) who became Emperor(1804- 1814) The Empire style was based on aspects of the Roman Empire. It is the second phase of neoclassicism which is also called"Directoire" After a government system.
