Which is a bummer, but it you wanted to use these that is the end that would be in the fire so you wouldn't notice it. These pieces are very heavy for their size weighing a combined weight of 57lbs. They are cast iron and it looks like the 'pearl' in the mouths are brass. I have not tried to clean them, so not 100% sure they are brass.
