ISLAMIC ANTIQUES ARTS CRAFTS ARCHITECTURE & More! Spain Maghreb Iran Turkey
Islam. Art and Architecture” Edited by Markus Hattstein& Peter Delius. Published by H.F. Ullmann in 2004. DISCUSSION: Overflowing with hundreds of color photographs and reproductions. This book follows the historical development of the Islamic regions and their ruling dynasties, and illustrates their varied forms of artistic expression from the birth of the religion in the 7th century to the present day. Such basic architectural elements as the four-iwan layout or the minaret, seen in many diverse modes of execution, demonstrate the independent inventiveness of regional building traditions. In the decoration of buildings or of everyday objects, ornamentation—that most recognizable of all Islamic art forms—displays its endless creativity. In the restrained yet inventive brick and tile ornamentation of Uzbekistan, as well as in the bright, ... morenaturalistic arabesques of India and Iran, and the geometrical ornamentation of Spain and the Maghreb, the abundant forms of expression celebrate the riches and beauty of Allah's creation. This impulse also inspired the colorful and fantastical illuminations and calligraphy, sumptuous tapestries, and the extravagant metalwork, ceramics, and jewelry showcased here” DESCRIPTION: Hardcover. 9”x10.5” 623 pages, color illustrations, dust jacket. ANTIQUE JAPANESE ARTS INFLUENCE ON JAPONISM -WESTERN ANTIQUES & ARTS & CRAFTS
The Influence of Japanese Art on Design” By Hannah Sigur. Published by Gibbs Smith in 2008. DISCUSSION: Japonism- the Western craze for Japanese art and design. Ran rampant in late 19th century Europe and America, and leading companies including Rookwood, Gorham and Tiffany all took up the challenge to incorporate Japanese design and aesthetics into their wares. Illustrated with more than 200 photographs, this book explores the story of Japan as the catalyst of modern design in America's Gilded Age—the rapid industrialization of the late 19th century. The"Japan Craze" came at a time of radical change in the United States and Europe. Western culture was yearning for the values of a past it believed were embodied in Japanese traditional arts, and Japan felt the demand for modernity it saw embodied in the West. ANTIQUE NATIVE AMERICAN INDIAN ARTS & CRAFTS, ANTIQUES - Ralph Coe Collection
The Responsive Eye: Ralph T. Coe and the Collecting of American Indian Art" By Ralph T. Coe. Published in New York by the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 2003. DISCUSSION: Published in conjunction with the exhibition"The Responsive Eye: Ralph T. Coe and the Collecting of American Indian Art" Over the past three decades. Ralph T. Coe has traveled extensively throughout the United States and Canada to assemble this collection of Native American art, one of the finest in private hands today. Immersed in the cultures of Native America, he has come to know artists and artisans, traders, dealers, and shop proprietors, selecting the very best they have to offer. The Ralph T. Coe Collection includes representative pieces from most Native American geographic regions and historical periods. Beginning with objects dating back to the fourth ... moremillennium B.C. Many examples—men's shirts with ermine fringe, weapons, and button blankets—evoke the heroic lifestyle of the past, while small objects, such as tipi and kayak models, dolls, and tiny moccasins, speak to a more intimate significance. Ritual objects imbued with spiritual meaning—masks and katsinas, tablitas and medicine bundles—as well as utilitarian objects, such as pottery and baskets, also have a strong presence. This catalogue tells the stories of nearly two hundred of these objects, combining art history with personal reminiscence, and reveals the role Coe has played in bringing about awareness of the artistic heritage of Native America. ANTIQUE ARTS & ANTIQUES OF THE MARQUESAS ISLANDS - PACIFIC ISLANDERS
Adorning the World. Art of the Marquesas Islands” Published in New York by the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 2006. description continues below the picture- DISCUSSION: Known for the elegance and complexity of their decorative art. Marquesan artists were described by Paul Gauguin as possessing"an unheard of sense of decoration" in all they created. The extraordinary ways in which Marquesans adorned their world are reflected in virtually every type of object they made and used, from sacred figures of gods and ancestors to items that were purely functional. Their work was fashioned from a diversity of materials in forms ranging from delicate ivory ornaments and luxuriant featherwork to imposing figural sculpture in wood and stone. The human body was also an important focus for artistic expression. Adorned with finely crafted ornaments, ... moreelaborate coiffures, and intricate tattoos that sometimes covered the entire body, Marquesans themselves became living art forms. In this book, the authors place the artistic traditions of the Marquesans within their cultural and historical context, giving insights into their distinctive visual imagery and their enduring influence on Western art and literature. Antiques Arts & Crafts Era Solid Wood Wall Mount Towel Bar Oak
Antiques Arts& Crafts Era Solid Wood Wall Mount Towel Bar Oak Every Memorial Day weekend. I go to a dealer in Indiana to treasure hunt, and I love my pickings this year. Lots of really interesting items this week- antiques and unique for sure! I’m also still listing new items from my last trip to the flea market, so there’s definitely something for everyone! Here is an antique towel bar with wonderful arts& crafts era style. Made of solid oak. It measures 18" by 3 1/4" by 3" deep- the towel bar space being 14 1/4" long. It weighs 2 lbs and is in excellent solid and sturdy condition structually, with rusitic wear to the age darkened patina, and the wood. There's a light round(looks like water matk) on the front of the bar that I'm showing in photos 4& 5- it's about the size of a quarter in width ... moreand a nickel in height. There's other scratches, scrapes, nicks, nibbles, dings and small corner chips- like I'm showing in photo 12. It's all part of the story of this beauty, though. You could polish to minimize all, but I wouldn't change a thing. There's two screw mounting holes on the backside- and you are good to hang.I can't tell for sure, but I think it is hand made. It's dusty. And could use a little clean up, but what a treasure you will have- you don't often see functional oldees with such style from this era. Love it! Please ask if you have any questions. Or feel free to inform me if you have any information about one of my listings. As with any of my items, if you ever need extra pictures, let me know, just make sure that you give me an email address to send them to. Pick up is welcome on all of my items. I’m happy to combine shipments for you, but I do ask that there be no more than 7 days from the purchase of the first item- I will invoice after 7 days, as I cannot hold the items longer than that. Also. Many of my items come from local rural estate sales and auctions. They are coming right from the barn or attic to you, dust, cobwebs

Arts and Crafts Owl Handled Fire Tools, Early 20 C. Antiques, 3 Tools with Stand
These are early 20th C. Arts and Crafts owl handled fire tools with a matching stand. These sets are often attributed to Rostland Manufacturing Company. Milford, CT, but I am not sure of their maker. The stand is marked"651-1" MADE IN USA" The set is missing a brush that would have sat on the rear of the stand. The poker, tongs and shovel are 26.5"L, and the stand is 27"H with a 9.5"x7" base. There is significant oxidation of the finish from use in a fire place. Further, the stand's handle turns slightly, but this does not affect its use. The tools and stand are well made. Strong, and ready to use. Mostly, the owl handles are comfortable to use and quite cool. Please do not hesitate to contact me for questions. More pictures, and or to schedule an appointment. MUSEUM OF EARLY SOUTHERN DECORATIVE ARTS - ANTIQUE AMERICAN FURNITURE & ANTIQUES
Southern Perspective. A Sampling from the Museum of Early Southern Decorative Arts” Edited by Gary J. Albert. Published by MESDA in 2005. description continues below the picture- DISCUSSION: A wonderful survey of 40 objects- furniture. Ceramics, silver, paintings, from the MESDA collection. Out of print as hardcover. MESDA's website notes- MESDA is the realization of a vision shared by two extraordinary individuals: Frank L. Horton and his mother Theodosia"Theo" L. Taliaferro. Who were pioneering antiques dealers and collectors who dedicated most of their lives to raising awareness of and appreciation for domestic objects made in the South. During the first half of the twentieth century, southern antiques were mostly dismissed by scholars and ignored by collectors. A movement to challenge the existing attitudes began in 1949 ... morewith the first Williamsburg Antiques Forum at Colonial Williamsburg in Virginia, which included a seminal session that called attention to the lack of information about southern craftsmanship. The intense study of specifically southern antiques began with the 1952 Williamsburg Antiques Forum, which coincided with the first definitive exhibition of southern furniture, Furniture of the Old South, 1640- 1820 at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts in Richmond, and culminated with the opening of MESDA in 1965. The results of the museum's efforts to fulfill its mission have extended well beyond the exhibition of the collection to include groundbreaking field research programs, award-winning publications, a respected research center and decorative arts library, and exceptional educational programs such as the Graduate Summer Institute cosponsored by MESDA and the University of Virginia. NATIVE AMERICAN INDIAN ANTIQUES & ARTS, PEABODY MUSEUM EXHIBITION CATALOG BOOK
Gifts of the Spirit. Works by Nineteenth Century& Contemporary Native American Artists” By Dan L. Monroe. Et al. Published in Salem by the Peabody Essex Museum in 1996. description continues below the picture- DISCUSSION: The Library Journal notes- The Peabody Essex Museum in Salem. Massachusetts, has only recently made its notable holdings of American Indian art accessible to the public. The celebratory first exhibition also produced this permanent collection catalog. Masterworks were chosen by five curators(several of whom are well-known Native American literary figures) to show the affinity between 19th-century and modern artistic expression. While the works are superbly photographed, the text is less consistent, with some anecdotes more cogent than others. Attempts to unify dialog about artifacts from many cultures and all media vary, ... moredepending on the writer's point of view. Still, the book offers invaluable historical documentation.
