These items have a very interesting return into the world. We recently rented a house built in 1915. The gentleman's family who built the house actually lived here in another smaller home dating back into mid 18 hundreds. As I have been raking. And doing some desperately needed cleanup around the property, I have unearthed many antique artifacts that appear to date back to the arrival of this family. The flatheaded pick adz is signed S F C, NC, and I cannot find anything about the date it was made. This company now does make fireman's axes which I find interesting. The 2 adz heads that I unearthed next to one of the outbuildings had the tips of them sticking up from under the base of the building. Next to them I unearthed a flattened metal rim from a wagon wheel. The only information I have been able to obtain on the 2 adz heads is ... morethat they are most likely dated from the turn of the 18th century upward to the mid 19th century. The metalwork is straight and true. The design is flowers. Leaves, and acorns, moving from VICTORIAN into ART DECO eras. EXCELLENT condition ANTIQUES with no damage of any kind. They are 19" tall, 5" at the marble base(black/grey/gold) and the candle placements are 9" across. There are numbers visible on the leaves, 1220 and 148. These may be inventory numbers. Early 19th Century Cast Iron Snow Bird Federal Eagle Architectural Antiques
Great authentic antique cast iron Snowbird or Snow Eagle. Circa late 1800' early 1900's. There are many styles and variations of these old architectural appointments and the Federal eagles were one of the most popular. Traditional example of artistic form following function. They were attached to the roofs to hold& keep layers of snow from sliding off. The snowbirds had mounting bars or straps that were usually placed about 24" from the roof edge. The'birds' then positioned side-by-side in a horizontal line. Their wings were designed to form a vertical barrier, holding the snow safely in place, allowing it to slowly melt. This Snowbird is an authentic architectural piece not a reproduction. It has a beautiful rustic bronze patina. It is without the mounting bar. we live in Orange Va. Incorporated in 1834 officially 1872. There's a lot if rich history in our town. Some houses have been here since the town was founded and many of the people have lived nowhere else in their lives! Makes for a great place to live and raise a family. One day a few months ago on our way home we noticed a guy on our street cleaning out his house and stopped to see if he was selling anything he said his mother who had lived in the house his whole life( about 65 years) had past and he was putting things in storage until the family could get together to go through it. But told us we could go through the junk pile and found this table. Just knowing antiques I knew it was quite old so I grabbed it. It's been in my back room since. While watching Antique Roadshow Richmond last night they showcased a piece that looked ... moreso much like my piece I almost jumped out of bed. After looking over what I have compared to what was on the show, I'm positive to say we have a one drawer Virginia tavern table! The drawer has the same wood(pine) that you look for on a Virginia tavern table and it's a very close match! There's a few flaws as you can see from pics it is missing a board at the rear of the top the drawer has some splits and broken spots but is solid. The whole table is a very solid piece if history and is in as found condition! Look up Antique Roadshow Richmond,Virginia Tavern Table. It has a few nails here and there someone added over the year. The drawer is not dove tailed. If the shipping is less then $140 I will refund balanced See pics for condition and description.
