This is a very rare lantern I have never seen another one like ... moreit listed on Ebay. The lamp is in excellent condition as evident by the photos. It has a very nice patina on the outside and looks great as is. Or can easily be polished for a brilliant shine. The lamp has a wooden handle, and on the left side of the lamp is a thumb toggle switch that opens and closes an aperture behind the lens that allows the light to have the appearance of turning on and off. I'm no expert, but I believe the lamp was designed for semaphore which is a method of using light to visually communicate with another ship, or from ship to shore, and vice a versa. The toggle switch works smoothly, and the door opens and closes freely. Please closely review all of the photos for the material condition of the lamp. The lamp has the original oil/kerosene pot, but it is missing the glass chimney and possibly a reflector that may have fit in the small rectangular slot at the end of the pot. A replacement glass chimney can be easily found online. The lantern measures approximately 20" inches from the top of the handle to the base, and it is approximately 10 1/2" inches wide. If you are a serious collector you do not want to miss the opportunity to own this lantern you may never see another one like it on Ebay. Size: about 23cm diameter and 24 cm high. Looks to have seen it’s time at sea. It is a beautiful piece regardless. I have not removed any of the patina. It is original and untouched(except for the label which I polished a bit) I have taken lots of picture. Please review them and ask any questions. This is a very beautiful and rather rare model of stern light. It would be a nice addition to your décor or as an operational piece of vintage marine equipment on your boat. Condition: In unrestored condition(I polished the label a bit to be readable) Patina is excellent. Even has sea salt on it: It is very structurally sound. Built to last and has. Lid opens. Back ... morescrew is fused with some stripping. The glass looks to be in excellent condition with no cracks. I believe it to be original because the hallmark on the glass is the same as on the casing. Cord has been cut and does not work(would suggest retro-fitting with modern electrics to be safe) The place where the light cord connects with the body has a crack(see picture) Dints and dings from many years at sea. The glass itself is marked in white with"1796" Electrical fittings have been tested and work perfectly. Add a light bulb and use as a lamp. Or copper tubing could easily be removed. The electric fitting was a later addition and is secured through the bottom with three small screws. Piece measures 33cm(13" tall without the handle and 24 cm across the base. This auction is for a PAIR of MATCHING Starboard and Port LANTERNS. Awesome pair of vintage ship's lanterns manufactured in Japan by Nippon Sento and Company. They are completely intact and considering their age. In excellent condition. They haven't been altered or painted and have a gorgeous patina present. Heck, who am I kidding, they haven't been touched(dusted) in years. Yes, those are cobwebs you see in the photos! The hinged doors haven't been opened in probably 50 years so you can imagine my surprise while opening to take photos finding the original oil containers with the wicks still intact. All writing on both lanterns is in Japanese. I don't detect any breaks. Chips or cracks in the colored lenses or glass. These were purchased by my father while stationed in Japan in the 1960's and were'vintage' ... morewhen purchased. In great shape. Stands 13" Tall x 9" wide/ Glass globe is good, no cracks, no chips- has a little film on outside glass that will clean up and will look like new. I have did not clean the lamp(Copper) only the glass globe that was dirty but I did not spend anytime on it.

The winner can leave the patina look or polish it to a high luster brass binish. There is no damage to any of the glass. There is a thick outer clear glass. Thick red filter glass and a thin hurricane glass over the wick. The only problem I can see is the clear outer globe has hard water build up and should be cleaned and polished. Also the vent adjusting knob is stuck. Maybe needs WD40. This lantern still has a wick in it. I think it just needs fuel to work. VERY RARE ANTIQUE JAPANESE NIPPON SENTO NAUTICAL SHIP BRASS LANTERN SIGNAL LAMP
For sale is an Antique Japanese Nippon Sento Co. Ltd. Ships Brass Oil Signal Lamp Lantern. This is a very rare lantern I have never seen another one like it listed on Ebay. The lamp is in excellent condition as evident by the photos. It has a very nice patina on the outside and looks great as is. Or can easily be polished for a brilliant shine. The lamp has a wooden handle, and on the left side of the lamp is a thumb toggle switch that opens and closes an aperture behind the lens that allows the light to have the appearance of turning on and off. I'm no expert, but I believe the lamp was designed for semaphore which is a method of using light to visually communicate with another ship, or from ship to shore, and vice a versa. The toggle switch works smoothly, and the door opens and closes freely. Please closely review all of the photos ... morefor the material condition of the lamp. The lamp has the original oil/kerosene pot, but it is missing the glass chimney and possibly a reflector that may have fit in the small rectangular slot at the end of the pot. A replacement glass chimney can be easily found online. The lantern measures approximately 20" inches from the top of the handle to the base, and it is approximately 10 1/2" inches wide.
