Antique Clear Pressed Glass/Brass Whale Oil Lamp Only With Snuffers and Wick
This is. I believe, a lamp intended to be used to burn whale oil. The wick is unburned, so I don't think it was ever put to use. The screw on cap, snuffers, and two wick holders are brass, with a knurled top edge on the cap to enhance one's grip when refilling the glass vessel. The cap and two wick holders are 2" high. The glass vessel is 3" high with a protruding 1" long ground glass stub. The device in is excellent condition with no chips or dings. There are some light scratches on the glass. There is an obvious lack of whaling here in Colorado. So where did this come from? Well, it's part of my parents estate. In the mid-1960's(as soon as I went off to college) they bought a very old, actually centuries old farm on Grove Street in Millville, Mass. The lamp is being offered as found for parts or refurbish or keep as is. The lamp stands 8.7/8" tall as is. The soot catcher or chimney cap is missing. The copper housing shows a lot of aged patina. This auction is for a very rare Miller brass binnacle hand lamp. The bottom removes with an oil lamp base with a simplex wick holder. It is signed E Miller Company made in USA and has a brand new wick. The oil lamp locks into the base. It has vent holes at the bottom and the top. It has a wood carrying handle and an Eisinglass/ isinglass front that is still intact. The lamp measures 8 ¼ inches with the handle up and 7 inches with the handle down and measures 2 ¾ inches in diameter. A ships binnacle lamp has no steel anywhere in it. It is is very good condition considering its age! It has a very nice patina to it and all of the glass is still intact. It also has all of the reflector plates on the inside lid. This is important because there are reproductions out there and they do not have the reflector plates. Reproductions also don't have the lead flaps at the tops of the glass panels to hold the glass in. The other thing to look for is the data plate. Reproductions are usually thin and cheesy looking. This lamp has the nice thick data plate. I did my research before buying this at the auction and am 100% confident that this is an original. In fact there is still some soot in the corners of the reflector ... moreplates to indicate that it was used. Measurements are 24" tall and 14" across. It was used as a display piece in the house and they had a screw in the base of the signal to hold the sliding hatch open. This unusual brass lamp was primarily used both aboard ship and for home use in Europe to provide light in the days before electric power was reliable. By design the usual wick regulator has been replaced with a brass cylinder that goes up and down serving as a flame extinguisher. The lamp is 3 1/2” in diameter and is also 3 1/2”tall. This could be used as either an alcohol lamp or will burn regular lamp oil. The patent date is February 17. 1903. A very unusual item for the collector. It is incised on the bottom SCANTIME DENMARK. Additionally. It looks to have been in use and in good working order as far as the wick moving up and down. We believe this is a brass oil lamp used on a ship. It has a stationary wall mount. It measures approx. 8" and the wall mount comes out 6 1/2" from the wall. The only marks we can locate on this piece is on the wick knob that says Made in MN1 English. It is weighted. There is one dents in the side. There is tarnish and wear on the brass. Anchor Ships Lantern(Not a Reproduction) This is a very large antique ships lantern marked as"Anchor" To the best of my knowledge it has all parts needed to burn oil. Please view pictures to augment my description. It is not electrified and it is NOT a reproduction. Lamp measures a stately 23" to top of handle. 18" tall without handle and at its widest a 10" diameter. With the exception of a dent in the brass at the base the lantern is in excellent condition. Lantern inner chimney has a couple of chips and a crack at the bottom where it sits in base. This can be easily replace but I beleive that this one is original so I will not replace. Awesome nautical historical item. I am not an expert on oil lanterns but will do my best to answer questions. This lamp came from an estate in lower Delaware near the beach. Here is a D.H.R. Dean Haan of Rotterdam. The lantern is brass. Not polished, has patina. On the bottom is the makers mark, Made in Holland. On either side it is embossed with a windmill. The lantern stands about 11" and 5 1/4" wide. On the back is a key hole notch for hanging. The wick is still intact and the turn knob works. The glass chimney is about 10 1/4" tall and the base is 2" wide. On the chimney is written cristal Prima. There are some spots of tarnish and a small scuff in the front. Otherwise, in good condition. Here for your nautical pleasure is a nifty gambel ships oil lamp. Two sided. Very heavy bottom to ensure plumb. It is made by(and marked) The lamp measures 11" tall w/o the chimney and 18" high w/ chimney. Approximately 3/5" diameter at the brass top and 3" on the brass bottom. As you can see. It is in fine working condition, but as with all vintage items, it is imperfect. I cannot speak as to its age: the 1842 in the name is probably the founding date of the company. Which is still in business. The lamp is from an estate sale of quite elderly folks who had a lot of nautical/marine items. If there is more information I can supply. I respond promptly. Sorry. This lamp is authentic and dated 1943 made in Great Britain. The stamp also includes a number(865) The lamp is 18 in high with handle and weighs about 8 lbs.
