Peter Gray & Sons Ship Lantern with Red Fresnel Lens
This lantern is badged on the inside of the door"PETER GRAY& SONS. MANUFACTURERS, BOSTON MASS. The company used this name from about 1885- 1920, so presumably it was made during this time period. It stands about 13" high by 7" wide and 7" deep, not including the bracket on the back. The body of the lantern is steel, as is the burner except for its bottom which appears to be copper. It is complete, including the burner(the wick is even still there! and the mounting bracket on the back which clearly had fit into a mounting plate. Overall, it is in good condition, but here are the issues that I have found: The lens is chipped in four places. The worst of which is the dime-sized chip on the right side(shown in picture) There is also a chip from the edge of the lens on the top right and two in the lower left. The door does ... morenot close properly. I didn't wan't to mess with it and possibly cause further damage. I'll let the buyer make that decision! On the back. There is a crease about 4" long running beside the bracket- Slight surface rust here and there This belonged to my father and he told me that it is a ship's port lantern. While I cannot swear that this is accurate and that it is not a railroad lantern. My research seems to confirm that it looks most like a ship's lantern. I used an LED flashlight to take the picture with the light from the inside, but it does not really do the color justice. The lens is a beautiful ruby red.

This is for one vintage– antique red glass lens for a boat light. Ship light, shore light or lantern. It is in the shape of half of a cylinder. The lens is in the shape of a Fresnel lighthouse style lens. It is red glass through and through. Not just red on the surfaces. It is 7 3/8 inches tall and 7 7/8 inches wide at it's widest. It has an inside diameter of 6 9/16 inches. It has a molded in rabbit or stepped edge for mounting in the lantern on the top and bottom. On the top edge it has"Corning Made in U.S.A. molded in the glass. The side edges have grind marks from making it flat there. There are some small chips on the edges. Sitting in front of a window it looks like the light is turned on.Very heavy with the brass construction. There is some patina and light scratches on cast bronze brass housing-looking down into center of lens glass. Part of the electrical cord remains inside- This piece sits on a wood blog base with the cord that enters the bottom of lantern and runs thru the center of wood block base that measures 9" x 9 1/2" This Fresnel lantern light overall height is 7 1/2" sitting on wood block and weighs more than 13 lbs. Appears to have been designed to burn oil(see photos) History: In the early l960’s. I purchased this lantern from a marine salvage yard in San Francisco. I disassembled everything and had the metal parts dipped to remove decades of paint and crud. And then sprayed the metal parts with clear matte acrylic. The objective was to just clean it up; not to make it look new nor“restored” At that time we had a waterfront weekend place on Bethel Island. CA, in the Sacramento/San Joaquin Delta area. Our dining table was placed before a window which overlooked Piper Slough. Where we moored our boat, and Frank’s Tract(lake) This lantern was hung above the table and centered in ... morethe window. During the wiring to accommodate 110/120V“shore power” I installed a small pull-chain switch at the bottom of the lantern. Here’s how it worked: If the adults were gathered round the table sippin. Dippin. And grinnin, we might prefer the red“mood light” only. If the kids were playing checkers. They would pull the chain to activate the down-light. LL Rowe Bronze Ship Red Signal Light Symbol 190 Series Red FRESNEL LENS Works!
For your Bidding consideration is a L.L. ROWE nautical light with red fresnel lens. This is from the Series 190 group of Nautical lights used by the U.S. navy. I acquired it from a retiring Boat Motor Repair Service who had acquired it a number if years ago and was using it at night on his outdoor patio. It has a variety of markings embossed into the Bronze housing so see photos for numbers. It is 120 volt. 90 watt. It uses 6#15T7C lamps and is in great working condition. It has a heavy duty red fresnel lens with no cracks or chips. The cord, I don't believe, is not original as it would have originally been heavily wired for military use on a naval vessel in an outdoor environment but has been set up and is working. The cord has been spliced, most likely by the previous owner when setting it up for use. There is a small switch on one ... moreside for"On/ Off" When lit, the light is a cherry red color. The color in the photos is a bit muted but know it is a beautiful cherry red- much nicer than the photos reflect. I have spoken with the manufacturer and they said that this is an extremely high quality lamp- originally charged to the navy at circa $1200 per light. The light, due to the high quality of the Fresnel Lens, is visible 20-30 miles. When in use, the housing does heat up which is normal according to L.L. Rowe personnel due to the heat transfer from the lamps to the bronze housing. The light measures 9 1/2" tall x 6" wide at the base. It weighs 13 pounds pre-packed.
