Usually they are made of bronze. This one has the bronze metal under all that black paint. Lantern appears original. With clear Fresnel lens. Lens is intact but has some BB dings or chips or cracks. Marked in the bronze casting on the side is"A" under that) is U.S.L.H 6. With few if any very minor expected dents, no cracks that I see. Pair Antique Copper Fresnel Glass Maritime Lanterns Port Glasgow Scotland
We don't know how old these are but expect them to be well over 100 years. Solid copper and thick Fresnel glass they are marked W Neil- Port Glasgow. Matching pair each weighs around 19 pounds. Are 20" tall not counting the hangers, and 10" in diameter. These old oil maritime lanterns had been retrofit previously for 110V and probably hung as outdoor sconces. There was lots of outdoor type debris inside the lanterns that I just left and the 110V retrofit lighting has not been tested. The lens measures 8-1/2" tall with a 9-1/2" diameter. The upper and lower sections of the lens are a smaller size. So the lens will fit into a holder with an 8-1/2" diameter. The lens was made by the now defunct Durkee Marine Products Company of Staten Island, New York. The company went out of business in 1920, so this item was made no later than that date. This is for one vintage– antique red glass lens for a boat light. Ship light, shore light or lantern. It is in the shape of half of a cylinder. The lens is in the shape of a Fresnel lighthouse style lens. It is red glass through and through. Not just red on the surfaces. It is 7 3/8 inches tall and 7 7/8 inches wide at it's widest. It has an inside diameter of 6 9/16 inches. It has a molded in rabbit or stepped edge for mounting in the lantern on the top and bottom. On the top edge it has"Corning Made in U.S.A. molded in the glass. The side edges have grind marks from making it flat there. There are some small chips on the edges. There are no cracks or repairs on it. It came from Duluth, Minnesota. Duluth is at the west end of Lake Superior and has a large ocean going ship harbor. There is some patina and light scratches on cast bronze brass housing-looking down into center of lens glass. Part of the electrical cord remains inside- This piece sits on a wood blog base with the cord that enters the bottom of lantern and runs thru the center of wood block base that measures 9" x 9 1/2" This Fresnel lantern light overall height is 7 1/2" sitting on wood block and weighs more than 13 lbs. The glass globe is 360 degree fresnel glass and is in very good condition with very minor wear. This light has been totally rewired with all new UL-Listed parts rated for any voltage of 250 volts or less. The new bulb holder takes a normal screw in house bulb of 100 watts or less. This light can be ... moreused for interior or exterior projects. It will never rust. This light originally had three snap clips that holds the top cover secure. But one of them is missing. The two remaining clips hold the lid closed just fine, so it is not a real big issue. This is a used light that was recovered during one our many different salvage operations.
