Up for auction today is this ANTIQUE CHINESE CARVED WOOD ARCHITECTURAL ELEMENT- CORBEL- SHIP ORNAMENTATION? We found this amazing piece of ornamental ... morearchitecture at a recent estate sale! The age is unknown but its believed to date to the late 1800s. Exactly what it is we do not know- a corbel? a ship's decorative support? temple ornamentation? Unfortunately. It's history was unavailable and our attempts to research the piece have produced nothing. We do know it's Chinese- made of wood and hand carved with incredible detail! Hopefully someone looking knows what it is- or(like ourselves) just finds it an intriguing conversation piece! It does have a relatively substantial amount of wear and tear to the wood from age and exposure to elements- the pictures provided show the actual condition- there are multiple cracks. Chips, erosion and discoloration of the wood, and what may be insect damage. The decorative carvings are fragile with some pieces having chipped away over the years but overall it is still an amazing piece of art that with some TLC could make for a wonderful addition to any collection or perhaps can be repurposed for more practical use! It measures ~ 14 1/2" in length. ~ 5 5/8" wide, and stands ~ 7 7/8" tall. Not only is this a large piece- it is also a heavy piece so shipping costs should be taken into consideration when bidding! Antique 19th century beautifully-carved matched marble corbels
This is a striking and beautifully-carved. Matched-design pair of marble corbels that date to the 19th century. My guess is that they are of Italian origin but I do not know for certain- most of the best carved marble came from Italy at that time. These could have been used on a fireplace, or as some decorative element inside a wealthy home or mansion. Both carry an identical floral design with a rose in the center. While the designs match and I feel comfortable calling them a pair, there are very slight differences in the sizes. Both are 10&1/4" high. One is 7&1/4" across the base in the back, while the other is 7&3/4. One is 3&3/4" deep at the center of the scroll on the bottom, while the other is 3&1/2. They were obviously carved as a pair and so I cannot tell you why there is such a slight difference. ... moreLooking at them, you would never see any difference whatsoever. Each weighs about 17 pounds. Condition is as found and as shown. There are a few rough edges on the rosebuds, possibly just natural wear, but nothing of consequence as to the overall look. On the bottom center of each, there is an area where they were attached- there is some marble roughly cut out there but that was probably done deliberately in order to secure them to a wall. She is absolutely stunning and you won't find another like her. The home had a maritime theme as many grander homes along the Mississippi do. Below the front gables. Hung these oak corbels in the form of a ship's figurehead/ siren. This plaster artisan took a mold from one of the original corbels and rendered them in plaster. We purchased his estate last year with some of his old plaster pieces. Last year, we sold one other of these but it had been finished off to match the oak corbels on the home. This one has been left in original old plaster condition(we find beautiful) and looks just like the relic you would want to own. In the photos, you'll see ... morewhat appears to be a crack in the plaster but it is not a crack. This line going through the plaster is where the original antique oak figurehead had a crack. When taking the mold. The plaster artisan left the crack in to give it a most realistic appearance. You can, in some places, still see the imperfections of the original oak corbel. Gorgeous. antique architectural corbel - 4.6 pounds - Real wood
I love corbels and the history that go with them! They are getting harder to find because they are usually found on historical homes under the eaves. This particular one is solid wood and was put together in sections. Can you imagine how much work these took to make in bulk for that particular house? Amazing. You can see some of the original finish but at some point some black was put on it and then it was lightly hit with some spray paint that Lowes sell that gives it a rough texture. Thanksfully. They didn't use a lot of the product so it will be much easier to sand off. This would look amazing painted in an eggshell cream and lightly sand the edges to give it back its aged look. Antique Plaster Chalkware Lamp Stand Shelf Sconce
This auction is for a plaster/chalkware hanging shelf or lamp stand that I bought at an estate auction in Ohio in the mid 1980s. I fell in love with it. But then never had a place to use it. I do not know how old it is, but most of the things in the auction had been antique. It measures 7.5" wide at the top. It is 3.75" deep& 5" high. It needs to be cleaned. Which I have never done. There is some damage, which I show in the last photo. It appears to have been glued/repaired. It was like this when I got it& really does not detract from its beauty. There are also a few fleabites on some of the edges. It is still a unique piece just looking for the perfect place to hang it. This is a heavier item& if I have over charged for the S&H.
