12.75" Antique Mercury Glass Candlestick
The largest piece of Mercury Glass I've had was 14" this one is a close second at 12.75" The base is 5.5" across. And the top is 3.25" in diameter. It appears to be a Bohemian piece, but the"forest" motif appears to be painted on in what was originally white, as opposed to the fine white granulate you see on other pieces. The silvering is more muted and less bright than you see on some pieces as well- this has more of an aged patina. This is the kind of thing I tend to see in shelter magazines- most people seem to like the obviously hazy and old look. There is no closure on the opening on the underside. This is a beautiful pair of antique etched cranberry glass hurricane shades on clear dolphin bases with 8 dangling prisms each. They measure 17" to top of cranberry hurricane. The base is a wonderful clear glass dolphin. There is a problem with one of the cranberry hurricanes: it has a l 1/2" zig zag crack coming from a small chip on base. See Photo. When the chimney is resting in the base the chip and a lot of the crack is covered. Unfortunate. But to be honest I didn't notice this flaw when purchasing at an Estate Sale. There is a small amount of whitish residue at edges of repair in a few places. On the inside of the"hole" there is a narrow sliver of glass missing along the repair edge. The Candlestick is part of a large and extensive set up for auction. If you wanted to have a look at my other items. The Candlestick is very finely made throughout and of a great Art Deco design. I was told the Candlestick was made by Moser in the earlier 1900s period and is a very rare find. The Candlestick is unmarked as I believe the earlier examples never were. As you can see the Candlestick has a finely etch decorated band with a nice scrolling design which is identical to that of the Moser Splendid glasses more commonly found in a clear color with gilding. I was unable to find anything like this set mostly being colored. Also leading me to believe it is also rarely seen. Another nice feature of the Candlestick is within the etched splendid design there is also nice multi colored enamel work. The top rim is also gold gilt, and the Candlestick is of top quality throughout. The Candlestick is in excellent all original condition with some wear to the Gold Band but no chips, cracks or repairs. The top edge around the rim has two sides that feel very rough so there are probably tiny chips that I am not able to see but I can feel. There is also a scratch in the piece about half way up from the base. I think you can see it best in the 2nd photo right under the lower spot of reflecting light. It can definitely be felt. The second tier is 3-3/4" wide and holds 16 2-part prisms, the third tier is 2-5/8" wide and holds 12 2-part prisms, the fourth tier is 1-3/4" wide and holds 8 2-part prisms, and the top section that holds the candle is 1-3/8" wide. Unique Antique ETCHED GLASS CANDLESTICK Flowers Leaves
Up for bid is a lovely old candlestick found in the 1960s in the attic of an elderly lady. The glass is clear and sparkly with a sunburst design in the base and flowers and leaves etched into the stem. They are etched around the edges of the stem to give a three dimensional look to the designs– unique! The candlestick stands 8 ¼” high with a 4” square base and a 2” square top. The candle well is about 1” deep and about 7/8” in diameter. Beautiful old piece. But it was hard for me to photograph it well enough to show its beauty. At the buyer’s request. Awesome set of original mercury glass candle holders. Which i would estimate from the 1920's. Originated from Charles Mayer& Company Indianapolis. Box is not musty smelling, so that tells me these holders have been taken care of over the years. There are no chips, cracks or fractures! The only blemish is where the silver has worn away from the mirrored backing, which you can see in my photos. I think that only lends to the charm of these. Measures 4" tall x 4.5" wide at base. Antique NEW ENGLAND SANDWICH GLASS CANDLESTICK. C. 1830 Square Molded Base w Blown Glass Candle Socket This is a good antique New England Sandwich Glass candlestick. Circa 1830, or so. Candlestick is 6 1/4" high with a 3 1/8" square base, and it has a typical Sandwich style square molded base common to whale oil lamps, and the candle socket and drip rims were blown by hand with the glass wafer in the middle to cement it all together. Condition is very good with just one minute flake on the rim(see last photo) which could be polished away easily, if desired. The whale oil lamps are fairly common, but the candlesticks are quite rare both from having less of them made, and also because they suffered more breakage than the lamps. This was found in New England.
