This is a Flint Cobalt 2" Fluted Whiskey Taster or Possibly a Toy Mug with a Handle. A Finished Pontil, ca. 1850-1870s. It is 1 7/8" tall. 1 ... more11/16" in diameter at the top, 1 3/8" in diameter at the base, 2 1/8" from the end of the handle to the edge of the rim, has 10 half-flutes, a 2-part mold, and a finished(fire polished) pontil. It is a deep cobalt with just a hint of purple. It is too small to have a ring to it. There is a little bit of wear to the high points on the base. Some bubbles, a few of which are large in comparison to the glass, some straw marks, a spot to the left of the handle that has 2 or 3 brown streaks of glass that are somewhat marble-like but are too faint to see unless looked at closely, some fleabites around the inner rim as well as some roughness from the mold, and there's a small flake off the upper rim. There are close ups so please take a look at them Other than this, given its age it's in fairly good vintage condition and has no chips, cracks, bruises, fractures, or repairs. Because of the wear around the upper rim it's possible that this is a toy mug for a child rather than a whiskey taster. But whiskey tasters could be this size. So it might have been used as both. As far as color goes. This piece is among the best; especially the thick base. The glass isn't thick enough anywhere else to be able to see the rich, deep, cobalt blue and even there you have to look at it straight on to be able to see the faint hint of red that turns it a tint of purple. That's why even with the small flake on the upper rim, the color of this piece is the reason it has always had a place of honor among my favorite pieces of glass. They date from between 1840 and 1864. They were my Great Great Grandmother’s. Passed down through the family to me. I only part with them because no one else wanted them and I do not like them. I had an expert on New England glassware look at them and they are confirmed original Boston& Sandwich candlesticks. As per all vaseline glass, they do glow under a black light, demonstrated by the expert. Mold ... moreblown(they have the pontil mark on the bottom) Very thick and heavy-weight. This pair of candlesticks is very early, proved by a few dark imperfections(tiny chunks of leftover glass from the mold that made their way into the candlestick glass) the many straw marks and striations throughout the candlestick along with bubbles throughout. This particular design of Boston& Sandwich Glass Co. candlesticks has become extremely scarce as most have been lost to breakage and mishandling over time. A pair recently sold at auction for $550! All Customs forms will state the actual selling price of items shipped internationally. Having descended through the Van Buskirk. Buskirk and Chumley families, co-founders of Monroe County, Indiana, this pair, along with all manner of American period furniture and decorative accessories, came to rest in a dining room cabinet in Bloomington, Indiana– the home of Gary Buskirk Chumley. Gary died last December. I retrieved the candlesticks from the cupboard and am selling them on behalf of his widow. Each is bit over 10 ¼” tall. The dolphin standard resting on a single step base 3 ¾” square. It is interesting to note that one of the cobalt blue petal-shaped sockets was fused to the dolphin with a wafer or biscuit ... moreof the molten blue glass. While a blob of opaque white was used on the other. Gary’s untimely passing came at a time when he was in full stride. Deeply involved in philanthropy, the community and writing his memoirs. He left behind not only a loving family but rooms filled with inherited treasures, their individual histories known only to him. For example. The next item I am listing today is a huge sampler signed“S.B. It remains in its original frame, but only Gary knew the name of the schoolgirl who created it sometime around 1840. We believe her first name to be“Sarah. I found it in a seldom-used upstairs bedroom. CONDITION REPORT: The bottom edges of each base shows the least roughness I’ve seen on pieces of this age. There are straw lines on both petal sockets. And one has a fracture at the upper third extending to the top edge terminating at the dividing point between two petals. I tried to photograph it in bright sunlight, a couple images coming up in a moment. In normal light or in use in your home, it goes unnoticed. More images and commentary continue below my three"Prime Directives: 1st: I never. Under any circumstances, use a reserve, and rarely do I ask fo

Dolphin Candle Stick, Boston and Sandwich Glass Co. Ca. 1850
This auction is for a single pressed glass Dolphin Candlestick made by the Boston and Sandwich Glass Company. It dates to the middle of the nineteenth century. The stick is 10 inches tall and it rests on a single base that measures 4 inches by 4 inches. It is constructed in two parts and joined with a glass wafer* This candlestick is in excellent condition with no damage and just the right amount of normal wear. The final picture shows a comparison of the candlestick attributed to Sandwich with a double base stick known to have been made by other glass houses at the time. Remember. You are buying the single candlestick. This is an absolute auction with no reserve and a modest opening bid. What's a glass wafer? The molds that were used to make pressed glass in the early 19th century were somewhat small. Large items like lamps and candlesticks ... morewere made in two parts and joined by a thin section of molten glass called a wafer. The wafer is located just above the dolphin's tale. The buyer will be responsible for postage and insurance. Shipping fees are the actual cost. I do not charge for handling. Personal checks are always welcome. The candlestick carries a money back guarantee. If you do not like it for any reason return it undamaged for a refund of your purchase price. You will have to cover the cost of postage.
