12.75" Antique Mercury Glass Candlestick
The largest piece of Mercury Glass I've had was 14" this one is a close second at 12.75" The base is 5.5" across. And the top is 3.25" in diameter. It appears to be a Bohemian piece, but the"forest" motif appears to be painted on in what was originally white, as opposed to the fine white granulate you see on other pieces. The silvering is more muted and less bright than you see on some pieces as well- this has more of an aged patina. This is the kind of thing I tend to see in shelter magazines- most people seem to like the obviously hazy and old look. There is no closure on the opening on the underside. In spite of this, there aren't any areas missing their silvering- even the base and the underside are solid. If you have any questions regarding the piece and its condition, please email us. Also know as Mercury Glass(or sometimes, Varnish Glass) is double-walled glassware with a silver coating inside the walls, similar to the silvering on a vacuum flask liner. The first patent for silvered glass was taken out in 1849 by Hale Thomson and Edward Varnish in England. Shortly afterwards, in 1855, Thomas Leighton of the New England Glass Company took out a patent in America. The demand for silvered glass led to production in glass-houses in England. Germany, France, Belgium, the USA, and Bohemia, many with their own production processes. In England Edward Varnish and his partners sold silvered glass for only about ten years. They had a major display at the The Great Exhibition in the Crystal ... morePalace in 1851. The main production from about 1860 onwards came from glassworks in the Bohemian forest. Huge quantities of silvered glass left the factories at Iglau and Haida. Where the whole region was geared for its production. In Germany this type of glass was known as Bauernsilber- farmer's silver or peasant silver. In England it was often called poor man's silver. The most common mixtures used to make silvered or mercury glass were solutions of silver nitrate with some form of glucose. At Whitefriars Glassworks in London they made silvered glass for Edward Varnish and Hale Thomson using silver nitrate mixed with grape juice. Each manufacturer had their own recipe. Which was a closely guarded secret. The silvering liquid was poured into the space between the walls of the glass vessel through a hole in the bottom, and it adhered to the glass. The residue was drained off, the inside dried, and some form of seal placed over the hole. Other finishing techniques included glass or metal discs or plugs, and the integrity of the finished ware depended to some extent on the seal. Martha Stewart's website says: Mercury glass is still relatively inexpensive. A vase in perfect condition might cost between $80 and $100; painted pieces can sell for $200 or more; colored. Engraved, cut, and labeled pieces can fetch more than $1,000. Exposure to air causes oxidation of the silvered inner surface and makes it flake off. To keep air from entering through the hole in a piece's bottom(where the silver-coating process begins) the original manufacturers developed several sealing methods, among them a cork covered with a wax plug, and a lead plug sealed beneath a disc of glass. Still, corks dry up and ... morewax falls out, so some believe that more than half of the mercury glass available today is damaged. And serious collectors want their glass perfect(unless it is in some rare form) Some buyers, however, actually prefer pieces with a crumbly, deteriorating coating. Between the A-one and the"as is, there's plenty of glass for everyone. As for care. John W. Keefe, curator of the large silvered-glass collection at the New Orleans Museum of Art, offers two important suggestions. First, he warns, don't remove any painted decorations.
