Seutter's large folio maps are known for their bold engraving style and flamboyant cartouches and this map certainly has both on extravagant display. This is the first state of the map(a second state in 1728 added letters to the scales in borders) and as such is a particularly fine. Strong impression. Seutter based the cartography on Frederik de Wit's ... more1670 map of the region which was also the basis for a map issued by Homann in 1705- both Homann and Seutter's map are de facto close copies of De Wit with regard to the cartography. Stretching from St. Petersburg to the Black Sea and Stockholm to Vienna. The map covers a broad range of territory but still presents a wealth of detail including charming pictorial topography and forests. This well preserved example exhibits bold original colour(Seutter and Homann maps were never issued with colour in the cartouches but were nearly always coloured with outline and wash in the map itself) and will make a fine presentation if matted and framed. We begin our survey of the plan with the title cartouche featuring a fine escutcheon of the Arms of the Commonwealth which consolidated the(White Eagle) of Poland with the(knight on horseback) of Lithuania. A Ceres figure in her role as goddess of agriculture is seated at right while the goddess Faustitas is shown in her role of protecting the herd and livestock- Horace wrote of the two walking the farmlands together. La Partie Meridionale du Languedoc 49 cm x 37.5 cm copperplate engraving. 56 cm x 46 cm sheet size, modern hand colour, Amsterdam, engraved circa 1623, printed 1633 We are pleased to offer this scarce example of the finely engraved map(Van der Krogt 4652:1.1) of the southern Languedoc region of France including the city of Toulouse from the 1633 German edition of the famous Mercator-Hondius Atlas. The map was compiled by Jodocus Hondius II(1594-1629) and made its first appearance in the Atlas with this 1633 edition under the imprint of his surviving brother Henricus. Their father(1563-1612) purchased the map copperplates of the renowned Gerard Mercator(1512-1594) from Mercator's heirs and with those legendary maps as the foundation of the Atlas the senior Hondius added maps of his own. A practice later continued by his sons and their ... morebrother in law Jan Jansson that allowed the eventual publication of nearly 50 editions in multiple languages of the Mercator-Hondius Atlas. The map extends from a dramatic presentation of the Rhône delta to west of Toulouse and Cahors. Beautifully engraved with beautiful decorative elements including a flamboyant cartouche. This well-preserved example exhibits hand colour work of the very highest order and will make an elegant presentation if matted and framed. A fine antique map of"Montgomeryshire" in Wales published in Francis Grosse's"Antiquities of England and Wales" between 1773 and 1787. To illustrate this publication Grosse purchased and re-used the copper plates originally engraved by John Seller in 1696 and built the maps into his text- the only change he made was to simplify the title block and remove John Seller's name which was present on most of his earlier maps(and he wasn't around to complain! The map is therefore a 17th. century map. Amended and reprinted almost one hundred years later- see interesting history below. He lived a somewhat controversial existence. Being at one time accused of conspiring to kill King Charles II. He was not, however, tried for this treasonous act and went on, surprisingly, to become Hydrographer to the King. Living in Wapping provided Seller with access to various maritime and sea-faring details and requirements, prompting an interest in sea charts and map making. Given this increasing knowledge. Seller embarked on a cartographic voyage of his own, his intention being to chart the coasts and waters around Britain. This collection would be entitled The English Pilot. Originally planned as a minimum three-volume epic. It proved to be a mammoth task and only the first was completed. The remaining two published incomplete the next year. Seller went on to publish more charts of the Mediterranean for the second volume in 1677. The project eventually came to am end in 1680. Westereich, Eyfel&c. 36 cm x 30.5 cm woodcut. 42 cm x 34.5 cm sheet size, modern hand colour, Sebastian Heinrich Petri, Basel, woodblock carved in 1588, printed 1614 We are pleased to offer this scarce original map of the middle course of the Rhein from the 1614 edition of the Cosmographia of(1488-1552) Widely considered one of the most influential publications of the 16th century with 24 editions published over more than a century. The map is presented in a western"sideways" orientation so that Mainz which is north of Mannheim appears to its right. Münster's magnum opus, the encyclopedic Cosmographia featured thousands of eclectic and vivid woodcut images: portraits. Town views, curiosities, monsters, scenes of everyday life as well as dramatic and sometimes ... morehorrific reconstructions of historic events. But it was also so successful because of its many woodcut maps, which as we shall see came to be something of a marketing challenge for Münster's eventual successor, the Basel-based publisher(1546-1627) In 1530 Münster married the widow of printer Adam Petri and the production of the Cosmographia was undertaken by her son Heinrich Petri. With demand for the book undiminished. His son Sebastian Heinrich had taken over the publication by the 1570s. However, with the advent of the magnificent copperplate engraved maps and atlases published by Ortelius and others the original woodcut maps of the Cosmographia dating back to the 1540s were in some cases erroneous and out of date. More importantly. Though, in comparison to the new copperplate maps and their ornate engraving work many of the old woodcut maps of the Cosmographia were truthfully rather crude in appearance. Sebastian Petri's solution was an elegant one- he revised Münster's maps as needed(incorporating"modern" cartography of Mercator and Ortelius primarily) and had new wood blocks cut"in the copperplate style" complete with ornate ca

Ducatus Mediolanensis 56 cm x 48.5 cm copperplate engraving. 60 cm x 52 cm sheet size, original hand colour, Augsburg, 1730 We are pleased to offer this exceptional map of northern Italy published by the Royal Geographer(1678-1757) Seutter apprenticed as an engraver to Johann Baptist Homann in Nuremberg and eventually returned to his native Augsburg to establish his own map making enterprise in 1707. Seutter's large folio maps are known for their bold engraving style and flamboyant cartouches and this map certainly has both on extravagant display. The map features vividly engraved pictorial topography. Detailed depictions of fortifications at major cities and this example is an exceptionally strong impression. Like his mentor Homann, Seutter's maps were generally not original cartography at all but close copies of earlier Dutch or ... moreFrench maps. Yet also like Homann, the bold style of the German engravers and their fine decorative elements often made a significant aesthetic improvement from the original source map. The cartography on this map is a almost exact copy of a circa 1700 map by the Dutch cartographer Carol Allard(1648-1709) although Seutter did convert the names of Duchies and regions from Allard's Italian to Latin. Despite some minor soiling and a small hole in upper border, this rather dramatic map will make a fine presentation if matted and framed. We begin our survey of the map with the handsome two title cartouche presenting a dual theme of agricultural abundance and martial might: Note road network converging on Milan- curiously the"I" in"MILANO" is obscured which is the second example of this map we have seen with this same"feature" which would seem to indicate a flaw in the plate.
