Fine. Original, steel-engraved plan of modern Rome, by the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge(SDUK) published as part of the Society's Atlas in 1844, in London, by Chapman and Hall. The SDUK began its map publishing project under the leadership of Captain Francis Beaufort R.N. in 1829, and published the maps in parts, haltingly, over the next 15 years, completing the series in 1844, finally permitting the publication of a whole atlas. Many of the maps were actually drawn by Beaufort, who at the time was the Hydrographer to the Royal Navy, and all were closely supervised by him. J. C. Fine. Original, steel-engraved plan of ancient Rome, by the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge(SDUK) published as part of the Society's Atlas in 1844, in London, by Chapman and Hall. The SDUK began its map publishing project under the leadership of Captain Francis Beaufort R.N. in 1829, and published the maps in parts, haltingly, over the next 15 years, completing the series in 1844, finally permitting the publication of a whole atlas. Many of the maps were actually drawn by Beaufort, who at the time was the Hydrographer to the Royal Navy, and all were closely supervised by him. J. C. Vintage Latin Map of Ancient Rome by Instituto Geographico de Agostini
For auction is a map showing the location and outline of the buildings. Temples, etc. of ancient Rome. The names of the buildings and features of the ancient city are given in Latin. The map was printed by the Instituto Geographico de Agostini S.p.A. Novara in 1965. The map is made in two pieces that can be overlapped as one map. Each half measures approximately 36 inches high and 55 inches long. The name of the map in Latin is"Forma Urbis Romae Imperatorum Aetate" which translates as the shape of the city of Rome in the age of the emperors. The map was done by Joseph Lugli and Italus Gismondi in 1949 on a scale of 1:4000. The map is multicolored. The edges of the map are somewhat rough, with some wrinkles and small tears(although the overlapping top edge is in quite good shape) and there are some minor creases in the body of the ... moremap, but overall it is in very good shape. The map shows the ancient buildings overlaid on a street map of modern-day Rome, with the streets, piazzas, etc. named in Italian. There are smaller maps on the edges showing the four regions of the city and the Roman Forum. I have provided a lot of pictures to give a complete idea of all that the map contains. This would be a great feature to frame and hang in a Latin classroom. I bought this map in Rome in 1972 and it is rare to find it in the United States.
