1954 CCCP Vintage Classroom Map of Lativa. Estonia, Lithuania and outlying areas. Made the year after Stalin's death and a year before the Warsaw Pact and the building of the first nuclear reactor. This map is enormous. Measuring a whopping 52" by 40" Printed by Denoyer-Geppert Co in Chicago, IL in 1954. All of the text, including the legend is in Russian. The back of map is canvas. The overall condition of the map is very good, no tears or punctures. Some slight discoloration of the edges, but not distracting. Wooden rod hangers on top and bottom with original ties. There are two nicely engraved insets of light towers, and one inset of Kihelkonna Bay. This chart is in very good condition for its age. There is some discoloration at extreme edges of the paper, one small tear at upper right edge of paper, one smudge at lower right above inset of Kihelkonna Bay, and several small corrections in ink. Otherwise the chart is clean and smooth. Please look at all 12 photos carefully, as most details, information, and flaws are visible in them. I am happy to answer any questions. Livonia& Lapland- was engraved in 1776- the date is engraved in the title- and was published by the Homann firm, Germany. Before the fifteenth century the peoples of Southern Europe had little geographical knowledge of the Scandinavian world except from ... moresketchy detail shown in the Catalan Atlas(1375) and on a number of'portolani' embracing Denmark and the southern tip of Norway. It was not until 1427 that a manuscript map prepared about that time by Claudius Clavus(b. 1388) A Dane who had spent some time in Rome, made available to scholars a tolerable outline of the northern countries and Greenland. That was to remain the best map available for the rest of the century and it was used as the basis for maps of Scandinavia in early printed editions of Ptolemy. Others by Nicolaus Cusanus(1491) and Ehrhard Etzlaub(c. 1492) followed but, needless to say, these are extremely rare; even the later maps by Olaus Magnus and Marcus Jordan, where they have survived at all, are known only by very few examples. In fact, apart from the rare appearance of an early Ptolemy map, the oldest of Scandinavia which a collector is likely to find are those in Munster's Cosmography published in 1544 with many later editions. In the following centuries the comparatively few maps and charts compiled in Scandinavia were usually published in Amsterdam. It is basically as seen in the pics. There is some darkening along the edges, one short half inch edge tear professionally repaire on reverse, otherwise the map is very clean and would frame up well. Joan Blaeu(1662) This map depicts the Baltic states Latvia and Estonia. Ever since the Treaty of Altmar in 1629 this area was a Swedish province which was mainly inhabited by Germans. The map was published in 1662 in the second volume of Joan Blaeu's Atlas Maior. As a basis for this map, Blaeu used a large-size wall map from the Swedish scientist Anders Bureus(1571-1661) who was head of the topographical survey. Conditions are as you can see in the images. Cartographer: Jan Jansson or Johannes Janssonius(1588- 1664) was born in Arnhem. Holland. He was the son of a printer and bookseller and in 1612 married into the cartographically prominent Hondius family. Following his marriage he moved to Amsterdam where he worked as a book publisher. It was not until 1616 that Jansson produced his first maps, most of which were heavily influenced by Blaeu. In the mid 1630s Jansson partnered with his brother-in-law, Henricus Hondius, to produce his important work, the eleven volume Atlas Major. About this time, Jansson's name also begins to appear on Hondius reissues of notable Mercator/Hondius atlases. Jansson's last major work was his issue of the 1646 full edition of Jansson's English Country Maps. Following Jansson's death in 1664 the company was taken over by Jansson's brother-in-law Waesberg.
