1592 Ortelius Map- Pomerania Abraham Ortelius. Along with his contemporary Gerard Mercator, was the greatest name in early mapmaking. While Mercator was the first person to use the term'Atlas' to describe a collection of uniformly sized maps, Ortelius was the first to actually publish one. This was his'Theatrum Orbis Terrarum' of 1570 and it was so successful that smaller versions were immediately called for. Philip Galle was the first to produce an'epitome' or miniature version, in 1577 but others followed including the Arsenius brothers. This fine map is from the 2nd Galle Italian edition issued as'Theatro del Mundo' in 1592. This map of Pomerania has fine detail and attractive engraving; the region shown includes the cities of Dantz. Up for your consideration is a beautiful quality Antique Map of Pomerania. The map was done in the 1630's by Johannes Janssonius a cartographer and publisher born in 1588. His father was a publisher and bookseller. He married the daughter opf a cartograpgher and puiblisher and set up a business in Amsterdam as a book publisher. He published his first maps in 1616 and contiued publishing a large amount of maps. From 1630 to 1638 he was in partnership with his brother in law Henricus Hondius. The map shows Pomnerania and the island of Rugen. There are 4 nicely hand colored cartouches and a heraldic cartouche. The map shows ships sailing in the ocean with a sea serpent close to the center of the map. One of the cartouches shows the king of Popmerania Bugislav Ivnior XIV. There is also a Coat of Arms. In another cartouche it reads Nortarum ... moreExplicatio Urbes. Urbes cum arcibus, Ducalibus, Pagi. The bottom right hand corner reads Nova Illustraissimi Ducatus Pomeraniae Tabula, antea a Viro cl.d.d. Eilhardo Lubino edita, nune iterum correcta per Frid.Palbitzke, Pomer. L.L. Studiosum. The bottom left cartouche shows the distances on the map, and reads Amstelodami, Apud Ioannem IanBonium. The map is very detailed and shows castles, forests,cities, lakes and rivers. I believe the Baltic Sea surrounds the land. The map seems to be in good condition with some discoloration here and there and a small tear in the upper left hand corner. The frame looks like an older one with wood nails and I believe is maple. The paper on the back of the picture looks newer and was replaced at some point. The map has writing on the back that you can see thru the paper. This must have come out of a book because there is a crease down the middle of the map. Andrees Allgemeiner Handatlas was a major cartographic work published in several German and foreign editions 1881-1937. It was named after Richard Andree(1835-1912) and published by Velhagen& Klasing, Bielefeld and Leipzig, Germany. By using chromolithography, rather than copper plate engraving, but reproducing the maps from zinc plates that were etched in relief(just like letterpress printing) V& K was able to offer detailed maps at a much lower price than competing works, such as the 7th and 8th editions of Stielers Handatlas. WWI Era German Soldier Cabinet Photo from Pomerania Description WWI era- probably earlier- cabinet photograph of a soldier. Taken at the Max Hintze studio in Stargard. Pomerania which was, at that time, part of the German Empire. Card measures about 4 X 2 1/2 inches and the oval image within is 2 3/4" high. His buttons appear to be regimental type, but I can't make them out. There is a number on his shoulder board that might be a 9, but I can't be sure because of the angle. There are a couple of small dirty spots on the front(see images) but no dinged corners and it's slightly curved from age. Great historical old photograph. 1679 Du Val Map- Loca a Suecis Acquisita in Germania Pierre Du Val was a nephew and pupil of the greatest of all French cartographers. Nicolas Sanson, and went on to become the Royal Geographer. He published many atlases in all sizes but one of his great achievements was the two volume'Geographie Universelle' first published in 1660, these charming little maps are very distinctive.
