Antique Map Iceland by Willem Bleau Hand Colored Copper Engraving 17th Century
Here is a beautiful antique map by Willem Bleau[Tabula Islandiae Auctore Georgio Carolo Flandro] From[Theatrum Orbis terrerum, sive, Atlas Novus] published by Willem and Johannes Blaeu, Amsterdam, hand-colored copper engraving on laid paper, mid 17th century. Fair condition, unframed, paper has some discoloration and chipping on the edges, as well as a couple small holes in the bottom border. There is also a 1" long slit in the paper on the right side stemming from where there is some chipping(it looks like someone started to make a crooked cut in this edge some time ago) Some pencil writing on the back. There is a 3/8" strip of old masking tape on the back that runs the length of the top of the map and 4" down each side. This tape was used to mount this map to the old matte. Measures 17" x 22 1/2" This is a double ... morepage engraving removed from a book so there is an impression/creases down the center where it was formerly bent within the pages of the book. This auction is for the actual item(s) as pictured. I find all of my items at estate sales. Antique stores, and flea markets. I do not repair any items or do anything other than a light cleaning and dusting. All items are sold as-found. I will do my best to note any flaws. 1784 Bayly Map- A New Map of Sweden and Norway John Bayly was an engraver who worked in London. England in the latter part of the eighteenth century. Much of his output was single cartographic items of larger size and he did little work for the atlas publishers of the day. However his one venture into mass map publishing was for John Harrison who published William Martyn's'The Geographical Magazine or a New, Copious, Compleat and Universal System of Geography' in 1784. This map of Scandinavia comes from the Geographical Magazine. It has very clear. Simple engraving and the oval title ignores the customary vignette, common to so many maps of the time. Like his contemporary, John Cary, Bayly brings cartography into the more recognizable, modern approach. T he map has fine detail to Norway. It is from Migeon's Nouvel Atlas Illustre Geographie Universelle, c. 1880s. A copy of the title page of the Atlas is included. The atlas was prepared under the direction of J. Migeon by Charles Lacoste. Whose names appear in the bottom margin. There are two double sided text page included with the map, one on the Low Countries and the other on Belgium in French. Size: The map image measures approximately 12 by 16 inches on a 15 1/2 by 20 1/2" page with a margin of an inch or more all around for ... moreframing. Condition: It is in Very Good condition for its age with overall tonal ageing. Printed on heavy paper with original hand coloring, blank on the reverse and has a centerfold as issued. It is basically as seen in the pics. There is some darkening around the edges and couple of minor spots in the margin, otherall very clean and would frame up nicely, see the pics for more on condition. The pics are of the actual map. As the the French Navy's hydrographer and chartmaker he had access to the finest information available to any mapmaker and used this to publish a large variety of atlases including'Petit Atlas Maritime' as well as his contribution to L'Abbe Prevost's'Histoire Generale des Voyages' This fine map of Iceland comes from a 1774 French edition of'Histoire Generale' There is excellent detail to rivers. Bays and harbours, lakes and mountains, and the towns of Skalhol and Holum are noted. The map has an elegant title cartouche with a scale of distance, and a lovely compass rose. Kobenhavn, 1944 small correction to 1962. The chart is 40" x 28" 103cm x 71cm) This chart is printed on Very thick paper. It has been used and shows wear in the center fold. Some small stains and smudges on it, also several navigational courses marked on it in pencil and in ink. Chart# 12 Dimensions: 28" X 60" 71cm X 155cm) Chart shows West Coast of Norway from Kvanhovden north to Aaasvaer Fjord and Lofoten Islands. Faeroe Islands, and all of Iceland. This chart is in very good condition but for some heavy smudging and light staining in the right portion(Norway area) Right fold shows some wear. One word pencilled very lightly at bottom near Nord Fjord and one in ink at right near Assvaeri Fjord. Description: Very large Admiralty sea chart. Map of Iceland. This is not a modern reproduction but actually printed in 1984. Date Printed: September 1984 stamped on back of map. Approx Size: Page 41 x 28 inches(This is a very large map with one fold down middle as issued) Condition: I will be listing a number of these old Admiralty maps/charts. They are generally in fair used condition. There are some creases. Marks and writing in pen and pencil on the maps(The pencil marks could probably be rubbed off) The pen marks are mainly neat corrections.
